View Full Version : M3 vs Camaros
I recently got worked by a modified (it was obvious) SS Camaro. We started from 40mph and I held him until I shifted at ~62mph, then he just pulled and we stopped at like 75mph...this was in my 95 M3 with Dinan chip only and I had passenger...
In my 97 (221HP/225 Ft-lb) I tied two different Camaro Z28 6sp's. The first was from 0-105mph, then other was from 80-120. Dead even on both.
In same car I worked two Z28 automatics (Freeway and off-the-line)..was not as close as I had expected. Big difference between auto and 6sp.
While on the V8 subject I have yet to have any competition from a 5.0L/4.6L Mustang GT or the 5.0L Mustang Cobra (1994) in either car (95 or 97 M3). I did get slightly pulled on by a 4.6L Cobra, slightyly, once. He looked modified and it was the version that came with 300+ BHP stock
Gazoline 03-06-2001, 05:13 PM I was behind a new red Mustang Cobra while on a slow curvy onramp leading to a 3 lane parkway. I came up on him quickly, had to slow for him and the curve, and we hit the main straight of the onramp and we both gunned it at the same time from about 30mph. I followed behind him the entire time in the clear right lane to 120mph until he let off. I was at WOT the whole time, except having to let off slightly twice when I feared that I was going to get way too close. I have a '98 M3/4 with ecis, reprogram, and pulley. We both let off, I stayed at 80, but he slowed to 55 and let everybody pass him. He didn't want to play anymore I guess.
V Shah 03-06-2001, 06:09 PM I ran a Cobra in the M coupe on the highway from 60 onwards. We were even till about 130 when he began to pull away. I hit the speed limiter soon after and he kept going.
Cannon 03-06-2001, 11:54 PM Just make sure that if you're going to pick on Z28's, pick an LT1 powered one (they have 4 square recessed headlights). If you run an LS1 powered car, you're going to get smoked (they have the rounded headlights and front end). Unless of course the road turns and you are a very good driver. The Z28's handle surprisingly well for a heavy, solid axle car.
A stock LS1 powered Camaro is about as quick as a supercharged M3. The driver would make the difference.
My Camaro is stock w/ the exception of a filter and Borla catback and put out 312 RWHP and 327 RWTQ on a Dynojet. My M3 is completely stock, and there is no comparison from an acceleration standpoint.
Granted, the M3 does everything else better than my Camaro, but in any straight line contest, the Camaro will smoke my M3.

JamesB 03-07-2001, 01:23 AM Im new to the BMW family so i dont know what kind of times some of the modded BMW's run. But Im sure some are pretty damn fast
I came out of a 99 Pontiac Trans Am that was running 12.6 in the 1/4 mile (slightly modded of course with only bolt ons) It had more in it but had too many problems with the car so i got rid of it.
It does not take much at all to make a 98 and Up F-body to run in the low 12's or high 11's.

you'd be surprised how quick these M3s get with some bolt-ons..the Camaro I raced from a stand-still had lighter wheels (Fikse, I believe), intake and exhaust. He was slightly disadvantaged with an extra male passenger in there, but I was glad to be right by his side all the way through half of fourth gear. I know he was pushing it because he chirped the tires in his 1-2 and 2-3 shifts...I am sure the 10-lb (vs 24-lb) flywheel and 150-lb overall drop in the car helped in this matter, but I was still stoked. saint166 06-11-2006, 10:41 PM good going . i had a similar race with a camaro that i posted on here and no one believed me glad to see someone else having the same race . like u i was pumped after .
notdownfornj 06-11-2006, 11:50 PM i pulled slightly on a 96ish cobra with the dohc 302hp motor, they are weak for that they are

Next race a 01 SVT Cobra, then if you can beat that...run a 03/04 SVT Cobra :D
pioneer416 06-12-2006, 03:53 AM i've raced...
a Z28 camaro...LT1...no contest
93' Cobra w/full exhaust, ecu upgrade.....close race, not enough space to fully test
03/04 Cobra...yep u guessed it i smoked him....:rolleyes
but damn those big ass V8 respond so good to bolt ons....much more so then our 6s

you would be suprised what happened if you ran an LS1 fbody with a capable driver. you could do full bolt ons on an e36 and a stock LS1 camaro or TA would work you.

Yeah a 1993 Cobra mustang i can see you beating, the very old school ones...Try racing a 1997 SVT Cobra @ 305hp with bassani exhaust & bassani x-pipe...Hehehe..I mean i'm not saying you cant beat it...But you'll need more mods than what i see listed in your signature...Now trying to race a 03/04 SVT Cobra, i haven't yet to see a NA e36 yet to pull a 03/04 SVT Cobra...Now i've seen quite a good amount of E46 m3's lightly modded pull 03/04 SVT Cobra's but thats different story though your talking about 333hp stock on e46 m3 so makes sense.

ya the 93 had all that bassani stuff, i think it was pretty even though i think he had an HP dif, but im def a better driver, the 03/04 cobra was F*n fast no contest
pioneer416 06-12-2006, 06:59 AM actually i heard that the 93' cobra (5.0) is the fastest of cobra's until the S/C 390hp ones came out. i could be completely wrong, as i know zero bout stangs, but u (trBo328iKevo) seem to kno a bit, care to enlighten me as im a bit curious. and in comparason im talkin in terms of stock for stock

the 93 came with like 235 stock...the 96-98s were faster and the 99/01 was faster than that....
notdownfornj 06-13-2006, 01:49 AM we raced from like 70-150, and i pulled like a car on it, all it had was exhaust, i am gutted from seats back, with coilovers, intake, chip, and no cats or resonators, just 2.5 piping header back
trBo328iKevo 06-13-2006, 02:27 AM No matter what in any E36 model BMW like i'm saying you'll need to be at least turboed or supercharged to be able to run any stock 03/04 SVT Cobra, racing a 03/04 SVT Cobra is almost like trying to race a old school ACR Viper. Now in my opinion if i ever got any old school mustang with a lot of power i would definitely get a old school Shelby GT350 or Shelby GT500...But finding any of the old school Shelby's are very, very hard to find. There's a lot of people always trying to compare Mach1 mustangs vs the 01 or 03/04 SVT Cobras which to me really is a difference.

all three run a 4.6 4V.....
de45t 06-13-2006, 01:12 PM stangs and camaros are heavier than m3.
