87 L6 automatic 170k runs like a top then shuts down at all speeds any temp. almost always starts right back up. recently died completely we replaced the crank sensor with a used one started right up then cut out backing out of the garage only to start up again. this car has been to the dealer with this problem and two mechanics
any one with a answer deserves a metal

Fuel pump relay ? It could be getting weak and relaxing occasionally.

Sounds like it may be a bad connection. I had similar symptoms and found the plug to the coolant temperature sensor cracked at the wire bail that locks it on, leaving it loose. A couple of turns of electrical tape to secure it until I get a new plug and I've not had a problem since.
In your case, I would try cleaning and checking the not only the coolant temperature sensor, but the speed sensor plugs and both the AFM and ECU plugs.

Ditto on the relays, replace both the main relay and fuel pump relay on principle. You can swap out K8, the fog light relay, to see if this helps until you get a new one.

i had the same problem ..and i think they are right about the relays..both under the gloves compartment ...change both see what hapen...
