Hey everyone, a friend of mine just bought a 2001 X5 4.4i. Anything he should be aware of?

He was asking me about a chip. I saw the Dinan one on their site, are there any other options for this engine?? What about other performance mods? I don't think he'll do a lot to it, but a few things might not be out of the question.

He's also looking for illuminated door sills. Thoughts? I told him ebay was probably the best place for something like that.

I'm familar with a few sites with products taylored towards the Z3 (LeatherZ, roadstersolutions). Is there anything similar for the X5 community?

the hoses on the back of the intake that go to the oil seperators and valve covers will rot and cause a lean condition. That is the only major problem besides ftont arm bushings.

Yeah, i have been looking for the exact same car and therefore have been looking for common problematic failures. The trannys go pretty early on these cars. 150k is lots of mileage before they go. $5k to replace... DONT CHIP THEM! It has been known that chips kill the tranny real quick. www.x5world.com Lots and lots of great info!

Water Pump
Main water hose
Transmission
CV boots (especially the outer driver side one)
Window regulators (all four)
Rear susp self leveling air compressor


With that said, I still luv my 4.4i beast

Yeah, he's already had to replace the passenger front window regulator, and had a hole in his radiator. Just got the car back. I'll let him know about the other things to keep an eye on.

Ha funny you ask, as I just had her inspected yesterday and sure enough she needs a new tranny:mad Noticed the tranny acting a fool while in reverse this past weekend:( Tranny shuttered and my stomach dropped. Waiting on the stealership to give me a call back.

is it only the 4.4s with tranny problems? did they fix it in recent years?
