View Full Version : Anyone use this trailer hitch?

Does it require any bumper trimming/modification? I read about another one (Master Lock, I think) that required some bumper trimming which I am not willing to do.
Also, how complicated is the wiring install (the instructions on that page do not open up for me)?
mottati 05-03-2007, 01:34 PM i have the oe bmw accesory tow bar for my M5. It also works on any e39 sedan, just need a different bumper cover with the cut out, and trim plate. bmw also has a wiring harness to go with it. Works as you'd expect from german engineering. Here's a pic.

quattro PETE 05-03-2007, 01:58 PM how much is that OE towbar?
mottati 05-03-2007, 02:29 PM i came across it used, well, purchased but never installed, for $400 on m5board.com. I needed to get a new valance (mine is the silver car) with the 'trap door' for the tow bar to go thru. The hitch kits are now available at the dealer however, don't know the costs.

fwiw, the phallus attatchment is removable, so we dont drive around like that usually, but it was a special occasion...

e39dream 05-03-2007, 07:28 PM yeah I know about the tow hook- I guess theres a oem kit now for the non m e39s too.
paboone 05-03-2007, 10:13 PM I used a delan hitch for my 530 iT, some modifications necessary, nothing major. Haven't finished car yet though, so haven't used it. Specs. say 150lb max tongue weight and 1500lb max tow weight.
verdugo135 05-04-2007, 07:51 AM What can we tow with that? I've been thinking about buying a jet ski or two. You guys think I can pull it with my 540i?
paboone 05-23-2007, 10:51 PM I have an Aluma (all aluminum) single bike trailer, which we are air bagging as we did the 530iT, to pull my Titan painted black with Harlequin trim, matching paint on iT. The trailer without suspension weighs about 300#, bike 680#, so well within limits adding compressor, small air tank, spindles, wheels, and tires.
paboone 05-23-2007, 10:52 PM PS: How'd you get your 540 laid out? Looks good.
wesTCU540i 05-23-2007, 11:21 PM I do not see why you couldnt tow a boat with a 540i. Ive pulled my dads boat (lake) with a 4runner 2rw drive and that doesnt have that much hp...I dont see any reason you wouldnt be able to tow alot with a 540 besides the issue of the car being low.
I want to see a slamed 540i pulling a BigAssBoat
Brewtech 05-24-2007, 06:06 PM Ouch! Tow hitches on sedans make me hurt.
