need pics of "through the metal" to help you out a little more

search the E36 M3 forum, as a guy just had this happen recently and if it actually ripped the shock mount metal out, your looking close to $800-$1000 for a full replacement and welding job

do a search for ripped out RSM's and you will find MORE than just this guys... it is a problem in the E36 M3's that needs to be addressed even on a street driven car...

the z3 reinforcement plates are a GREAT precautionary measure

I know Turner Motorsports sells a reinforcement kit, but I don't know if that will help you. Depends on the amount of damage you currently have.

If it is anything like the pics that toropoki posted... will not help you.

I don't know how much it will cost to repair, but most of it will be for the labor. I guess you could price around at various reputable bodyshops.

Good luck, let me know if/where you got it fixed. I may have an issue like this in the future, especially my daily being on coilovers.

pretty much like the pic above except that the shock did not go all the way through yet. It ripped off the tower but the hole is still small enough to keep it from goin all the way through...

did some searching and found this bmw part # 41148169027

im going to bmw tomorrow to pick up the e46 RSM's, Z3 reinforcement plates and that rear shock tower replacement piece. I just have to find out how much it will cost to get that piece welded. Also, how am I getting it to the shop? I drove it to a friends house in Kaimuki.

Just unbolt & remove that shock for when you need to drive it from there to the shop. Shocks don't hold the car up, they just damp spring movement, and unsprung weight oscillations.

(assuming you don't have coilover; with them it is the spring holding that corner up, not the "shock" damping stuff within it)

You CAN drive a car without shocks, it'll just handle funny and bounce down the road. You'll have 3 of 4 shocks, so it won't be that bad. Prolonged driving with bad or non-functioning shocks can lead to abnormal tire wear, but for the short trip, you'll be ok.

thanks for the info man... i have the car @ a friends house on 10th ave. The part I mentioned above had to be special ordered but it should be in on wednesday. I guess I'll drive the car home with the 3 stocks so I don't have to leave it at her house....

thanks again everybody ... btw any suggestions for auto body shops. I was thinking Central since BMW sends their stuff there. any other ones?

mahalo again...

I was kinda curious and checked on what's being sold for rear shock mounts for both E36 and E46. Seems as though the upgraded RSM is standard for all these models and the brand to get is Meyle. They've redesigned the mount so that it's better but not bulletproof like some others that'll let the sheet metal tear before the mount breaks. $10 each. Not bad!

since the top of the shock is already ripped out, all i have to remove is the one bolt on the bottom of the shock right? i think i read that is a 18mm.
