Wow, that sucks. Especially since if I remember correctly from your original thread here, you had an Acura tranny blow up on you and were seriously going back and forth over whether to buy a BMW and face higher maintenance costs, etc...

Or maybe I have you confused with someone else.

no thats me but you know what, i believe aamco offers 3495 financed with lifetime warranty rebuild..so thats what i will do...yea i dont want to waste my money on that because i get school checks for 1400 so i will keep those towards that,it runs great though, they got the aux fan running but it doesnt run when i turn the AC on but he assured me that it works.

abs module

tranny, the other option is a used tranny for 1250+300 shipping + 500 installed.

i will drive this car till it dies.. and im keeping it.

Don't do AAMCO. Go with someone who knows what they are doing.

+1. I would not take take my BMW to AAMCO.

i can agree with avoiding AAMCO. but i hope you guys have other suggestions. to be honest, i find that getting transmission work done on BMW is a pain. if you take it to a transmission place, often they won't do it if they know it's in a BMW. if you take it to a BMW place, they don't usually work on the internals, but will replace it. not many places these days that work on BMWs and will rebuild transmissions... especially if it is an auto...

is the tranny a ZF unit...? if so contact them...personally i would change the fluid, reset the codes and run it until it pukes...

but i don't rely on a car to get to work, etc...

If it was me, I would find a transmission with a low mi. and get it installed by a good trusted indy shop

You have a GM trans. The same trans from a few Cadillac models. A quality rebuild should be somewhere south of 2k.

What are the symptoms of the transmission? Why does BMW say it's bad?

Take a look at these guys for tranny rebuilds....

www.bmracing.com

www.levelten.com

They do all kinds of trannys at a couple different levels of rebuild. I'm just throwing it out there as an option you may want to consider.

I did think about the change of oil etc, but why spend 300 ya know? i dont know if it would be worth it VS drive it till it dies then get a tranny rebuild?

Thats what i am really leaning towards.

There are no symptoms besides this
Shift TO
2nd smooth not extremely smooth but barely notice able
3rd smooth
4 smooth
BUT
if i am accelerating a little hard, what happens is in the third gear, to shift to 4th if i wanna go more then 3k rpm (my usual shift is 2500-3000) what it will do is, even accelerating hard gas pedal 1/2 way down-2/3 and it will let me go up till 3k in 3rd gear then shift to 4th.

and if im flooring it in 2nd or 3rd it slightly thinks or hesitates to go more than 3500 RPM for like a split second and then it will go till 6 and still shift flawlessly.

BUt they said that the light is a reoccuring transmission light. he said it runs fine.

Go see somebody else for the second opinion. You never know, maybe replacing fluid will help. Why is it $300 for the new fluid?

I dont c why aamco is bad i had them do a tranny rebuild on my e46, and it is great 40k later. for the 3500 i got an external transmission cooler installed, royal purple and the life time warranty. The only thing with the warranty is that you have to flush the tranny once a year. Not bad and honestly is shifts harder but it feels more solid than before. I knwo a guy also with a 540 that took his there and he hasnet had any problems either. Its a gm tranny, thats used in a lot of cars.

I guess aamco quality would be location specific. I know the aamco's in my area are not trustworthy. I wouldn't let them look at my bimmer. Maybe Houston ammco's are ok :dunno.

My preference would still be to take it to a performance trans shop and have them supe up my GM tranny. I hear hair dryers make auto trannies cry when attached to M52tu's :devillook.

All the aamco shops are independantly owned. My friend had one. He said some of his fellow owners were out to make max money anyway they could which was to push customers to the max rebuild or grossly over charge them for lesser work. Maybe you got one of the better shops.

I do not want to disparage aamco in general. My friend said some shops are very good and some others want your wife for payment, up front. Its a crap shoot unless you know someone or a friend that had work done or like your own personal experience. If you got good service you could stick with them w/o too much risk.

Personally I would dig into what and why and how much and get a short education by talking to competitor's shops and bouncing one shop's plan against another shop owner. After a bit of this, spread over a week or more so they know you are not in a rush, you will know who to go to and also you will get the best price. If you are not afraid to talk to these guys this approach works well. If you are more reserved it won't work well.

I agree with turning this problem into an opportunity to beef up the old tranny, the old girl. Get her a new pair to parade around.

Also agree its a crap shoot.

you know what honestly, im not looking to spend big money, whatever i can get that will last me, cuz im going to use this car for another 3.5 years and thats it, once i go to med school, its using a train or just buying a new car in general, and if this babys running then il drive her till i am done with med school, now if i got like a 01 540 and my tranny when, then i would beef it up... but this is just a 528i...point a to point b...in style. that is all. so as cheap as possible is my thing.

I will check that ebay thing out.

Congrates on med school. My son-in-law is doing his residency, my step daughter just graduated as a PA from Emory, Physician's Assistant and my daughter is graduating next week, Doctorate in PT, Physical Therapy. Wife and I will have lots of medical help in our old age. Even wifey is a licensed OT, Occupational Therapist.

you were at knauz bmw? What day were you there? I stopped by there monday or tuesday and i saw a white e39 with an m5 front bumper parked where they put the cars that are finished and waiting to be picked up, but i didn't look around the car so i couldn't tell if it was a real m5 or not. Maybe that was your car, I didn't think i lived near any forums members.

Anyway I had my tranny rebuilt in november after i got snowed in and frustratingly rocked the car back and forth till i broke it (not on purpose, just not thinking.) Aamco rebuilt mine, it was about 3200 but it's been working fine ever since, so I have nothing negative to say about them. But like someone said before they're independently owned. Their warranty was only 1yr/12k miles though.

Hi,

No dude, i was there at like between 12-3 and i have a black 528 i, i wish it was an M5

your not to far i just drove 40 miles to KNAUZ bmw cuz they charged me 50 bux to fix my aux fan. it was "mounted improperly"

also i was looking at this thread that says since i have a GM tranny in mine it can be rebuilt for around 1k so im trying to look into that. btw 1year 12k is a shitty warranty so i will look for something better.

anyone know how long it will last if i drive normally? i shift at 2500-3000 rpm.
feel free to shoot a pm to me if you want to meet up or something..

got your pm, as soon as i find a job i will be over bro! TY demetrios.
