Well, my good ol auto tranny took its last full breath today. I was heading home from the gym, merging onto 405 and stepped on it a little to get a head of another car. Well, my revs shot up and I didn't end up accelerating much. Shortly there after my car went into failsafe/limp mode and would only stay in 3rd/4th gear. Enough to get me home. Well, per the user manual, turned off the car. Sat there for a min and then started back up. Failsafe light is off but CEL is now there. Tried to drive it around and it shifts horribly.

I want to find out what the CEL code is but I don't have the reader. Anyone in the bellevue/factoria area have one? I'll buy ya breakfast or lunch tomorrow if you can meet me and read the code. Either way i'm guessing I need a new tranny, should I go for a 5spd swap or just put an auto back in and sell the car and get a newer BMW??

Also, anyone know of a good shop that can do the work w/out taking my kidneys to pay for the labor? Anyone for a 5spd tranny swap kit laying around I can buy?? TIA!!

5 spd swap!! as for the code reader, go to a local shucks/kragen and they will do it for free. you dont need one if you have an obd1, u can just press the gas pedal 5 times and it will throw the code.

Really? Schucks will do that? I'll swing by there, should be able to limp my way there tomorrow. I'm OBDII so the gas pedal trick won't work for me. Oh wells, dammit. This car is killing my wallet.

That sucks buddy, good luck with that. It sounds like tranny for sure but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it's an easier/ less expensive fix than that.

It was installed today! 5 Speed is in and operable. Needs a tranny fluid top-off and a new slave cylinder shortly but, so far so good! I hope! the 5spd with the diff from the auto is crazy, i get through gears stupid fast.

Tranny fluid and slave cylinder replaced! Clutch feels much better now! Was having some issues with the clutch not disengaging due to a worn slave cylinder. Shifts butter smooth now. Only things left to do, figure out how to get the damn CELs to go away, and wiring of the reverse lights.

Total cost was around 1800 which includes parts and labor, new slave cylinder and tranny fluid flush.

I actually paid a couple guys who have completed the swap a few times to do the labor. I didn't feel comfortable venturing into this project and have my car layed up for a week. I watched and helped out. The total time it took to complete the swap was around 6-7hours. So it can be done in a day, if you've done it or know someone who has had experience w/ it before.

the swap sounds sweet, the gearing from the auto must be higher then the manual so must be pretty quick. good luck with the slave cylinder the back up lights and the cels which some people would pull the bulbs on the auto only ones so good luck it has worked for you so far.:buttrock
