View Full Version : BMW 335i Auto Transmission Problem
Trauma 04-24-2007, 05:30 PM I have a 2007 Ti silver metallic 335i coupe. It has less than 1050 miles on it with the automatic tranny.
Today I got a yellow sprocket with an exclamation point on my gauge cluster. The car would shift into reverse and drive but would hang in 2nd gear. I pulled into the BMW service bay and put it in park. When they waived me forward I attempted to put the car in drive and no-go. None of the guys there could get it to go either.
I am called at 5:15pm today and they tell me they have sent the diagnosis information, etc to BMW of North America as a "major" problem. He mentioned it may be the valve body.
I will keep everyone updated.
Bummer. Hopefully its just a one-off incident and you get your car back soon.
E92!Dreier 04-24-2007, 06:06 PM The transmission episode you describe is something I also experienced, but in an old 325i AT. The same yellow sprocket warning symbol appeared, and the car would not change gears in drive. This is an electronic lock described to me as a limp mode, where your car's performance is limited to avoid further damage after some sort of tranny failure or slippage.
They found metal inside of my transmission -- I tried to have it rebuilt, but the computer never let it out of limp mode again. A few thousand dollars and a new transmission and control module later -- out of limp mode.
GOOD LUCK, and make BMW NA take you seriously.
raceyBMW 04-24-2007, 08:07 PM Hopefully they will have plenty of trannys on hand since this is the first I have heard of this. As long as not every car is needing one, should be a decently quick fix. Had same thing happen in my '94 530i, and I had to get a new tranny because of it.
pci0700 04-24-2007, 10:33 PM The same trans-stuck-in-second-gear and yellow sprocket AT warning happened to my 2007 328iT with 300+ miles today. After I put the trans into P, I was unable to get D to drive mode at all. When in D, it felt like it was in neutral. I was able to get D to work again after I turned off the engine and let it rest for about three minutes before restarting. The warning went away when I did the Engine Check on BC afterwards. I will post again after my visit to the dealer tomorrow.
Christos 04-25-2007, 11:04 AM whats is a 328iT
pci0700 04-25-2007, 11:58 AM it's a sports wagon.

Sounds like it's an electronics problem if you were able to get it back in D after rebooting the car. I'd take it to the dealer and have them pull the exact code since it'll be stored in memory.
RidinLow 04-25-2007, 04:38 PM pci0700, I just spoke with a friend at BMWNA. Sounds like it's a programming issue. A reflash should take care of the problem... so off to the dealer you go! :)
pci0700 04-25-2007, 05:10 PM Thanks, Scooby! Car is with dealer now. Will update when I hear back from them.
Snowkone 04-25-2007, 08:38 PM Good luck and hope you get your whip back soon! Will wait for the update...
pci0700 04-26-2007, 10:04 AM Dealer called last evening to confirm there's a AT fault code registered in BC. They will consult with BMWNA for solution today.
pci0700 04-26-2007, 10:08 PM End of Day 2 and still no concrete answers from my dealer as to what's being done to resolve the AT problem. Not good!
RidinLow 04-26-2007, 10:13 PM :( Did they call BMWNA?
pci0700 04-26-2007, 10:57 PM They claimed they called BMWNA. But the service coordinator was unable to confirm what had/had not been performed on the car because the technician did not complete his work order and had already gone home for the day. Is that just an excuse? Let's hope not. He's innocent for now till proven otherwise.
Trauma 04-27-2007, 11:08 AM No concrete information from my dealer.
They did a re-flash, etc with no resolution.
I was called yesterday and told the car would "be here awhile.". I assume they're waiting on BMWNA.
pci0700 04-28-2007, 03:38 PM Got my car back yesterday. No definitive answer given by the dealer. The is the quote on my repair invoice:
"CAUSE: FC 56BF IN EGS"
"CORRECTION: CK OIL LVL & CONDITION=GOOD, SUBMIT PUMA TOLD TO CLEAR FAULT & TEST DRIVE 40 MILES AND CK, FAULT DID NOT RETURN ADVISED TO RELEASE VEHICLE TO CUSTOMER"
Surely BMWNA could give a better answer as to why the AT fault code appeared in the first place and follow up with a more confidence-inspiring answer than that. After all, this is not exactly rocket science.

Well, at least you have it in writing that there was a trouble code. Look at this way, if the problem doesn't come back, there's nothing to worry about, and if the problem comes back again and they still can't fix it, you're not that far away from getting a new replacement car. :devillook

Trauma, any news on your repair?
Trauma 05-05-2007, 03:24 PM Car is back as of 5/2/07.
Cause: "Internal fault in mechatornics module for auto trans. Interrogated fault memory found FC 4FB2 in EGS and A0B6 IN CAS submitted PUMA case #9598849 diagnosis revealed faulty mechatronic control module. Replaced mechatronic control module in auto trans. Programmed coded complete vehicle as required for replacement."
Car runs fine as of now.
Hotsuye 06-30-2008, 05:40 PM I have the same light come on Occasionally.
Like maybe once every 2 months. It goes into "safe mode".
I have a 1993 325is with an automatic tranny with 143,000 miles.
Should I be concerned?
And if its a bad transmission chip, is the chip easy to install and inexpensive?
