Wait, so you're saying we are allowed 7 characters AND a space?!?

The DMV has a site that lets you try out custom plates if you want to see for yourself. Seems like all the good ones are taken...

Well, we got it to the dyno finally, and the track this weekend! Here are some shots of the temporary solution on the hood and intake. Rough, but I had a free hood and with an hour to go, it works!

No - coaching so I don't have time. I had it there on Sunday. Ran two sessions. Had a bad cooling hose the first one which we solved. The second session I started to lay into it. It was faster than all the other cars that I could tell in a straight line, but I had an open diff (don't ask) so I was getting wheel spin everywhere on the twisty north course and it definitely needs more spring to feel at home on the track - I think I am going to go to 900# fronts.

Close to the end of the session, it started acting up - cause was some melted stuff...

So now, it is time to finalize some things. Since everything works, first step is to send the downpipe, headers, exhaust housing, and intercooler pipes to Jet Hot for coating! We are going with the new Extreme Sterling where we are sure it won't melt. The headers and turbo get Jet Hot 2000 - not quite as good at holding in the heat, but it will last. Then everything in close contact gets insulation or reflective material, we fit the blanket on the turboo, etc and start turning up the boost.

Also, I am going to look for a different oil cooler solution. I think our oil temps are causing the water temps to be abnormally high due to placement. Not a ton of room elsewhere, but we will figure out a way to put a decent cooler behind or under the radiator.

Glad to hear it's running!

Any reason you decided to stay with the 'sterling' finish and not the higher temp 'black' stuff. It's not as bling as the sterling finish, but they pimped the black stuff on me for all my hot parts of my build.

You need to look at VaderM3's hood. You need extractor vents on both sides, and one in the middle 11 inches back from the roundel to suck the air up out of the radiator like he did. I chatted with him about it and he said it made a night and day diffrence on track with under hood heat...

That there hood cut out looks like some redneck track prep!

I found some actual working extractor hood vents, look for a Pontiac GTP hood vent set. they are true extractor type vents. Kinda hard to find though. they are NLA from Pontiac...

And think, it was only 10psi and it was the fastest car there on the straight's!

Kinda scary huh ;)

Ahhh, I remeber almost running over the P car TT at barber...it was great!

Not Sterling - Extreme Sterling. It is a new finish and is the most effective on the common market at this point in insulating, but it will only take about 1700 degrees. I went with the black 2000 coating on the manifold and turbo where the Extreme Sterling would have been marginal.

Hood - I really want to put on a stock hood. I can do plenty if I hand it over to our carbon guy, but I want a sleeper if possible. We are going overboard on the insulation so we will see if that is enough. I know I could make it perform better with some hood features, but ultimate performance at the expense of all else isn't what we are shooting for.

Step 1 of bringing the underhood temps down to a reasonable level. Should drop them by 40% ballpark with the Jet Hot alone - we will be wrapping, reflecting, venting, etc as well...

I think there are lots of other issues that make it a loser for business. Even if we state up front that we don't do additional support on the product, we will have a lot of more in-depth tech questions. A lot of turbo guys know exactly what they want and are crafty, but there are always the ones that don't and expect you to make it turnkey.

Now. If you think there is interest given that it will not be cheap and will not be supported, I am not going to not share. I can look into mass production, but we would need to be able to knock out 10 or so at least I would think to make the setup worth it. Would have to be a winter project as well.

OK, things are wrapping up quickly in final testing form. I am running in the Ultimate Track Car Challenge Friday without as much test time as I would prefer to have. Easy to get the setup right for a 300 Hp E36 M3, but this one is a little out of my normal tuning window for a baseline setup...

The first thing we addressed from a handling standpoint was spring rate. 700/400 was a little soft given the weight and power of the car. I bumped it up about 200 pounds in the front to give it some platform. Now hopefully it won't rain!

Heat was the biggest issue we encountered. Keep in mind, we are going to be pushing over 800 crank Hp at full boost for 20-30 minutes at a time straight - bring in the NASA engineers! Most turbo cars are good for a few passes before getting into my personal "too hot" range. So now the challenge is to balance some of the street components that make the engine compartment so packed with reasonable temps and enough insulation. Here is attempt 1. Jet Hot coatings on all the exhaust and plumbing, then added high temp wrap where it would fit.

http://www.bimmerworld.com/images/touring/wrappedheader.jpg

http://www.bimmerworld.com/images/touring/wrappeddownpipe.jpg

We had to convert to the OBD I valve cover (plastic OBD II was melting). We will trim it out for more of a clean street look under the hood once we know we have solved our problems, but we had this piece made for now to pretect the wiring and top of the engine.

http://www.bimmerworld.com/images/touring/VCblanket.jpg

Finally for today, the new track wheels and tires - D-Force LTW-5 18x9 all the way around with Hankook C50 compound Z214 tires. They actually clear the brakes with no spacers, but we may need to shim out for spring perch clearance in the inside. The BBS RE although forged and super strong will make better street wheels I think.

jamesclay

Final alignment and working out some details. Mounted up the Max Velocity track splitter. It is heavy enough that it can get a little pushy at turn entry. I am assuming that the driving style for this car should be throw it in the turn hard, turn, straighten out, and mash the gas.

http://www.bimmerworld.com/images/touring/splitter.jpg

And the good news - the new carbon hood fits! I think it will still be super tight and we will have to revisit it, but it now seems like everything is a nice, tight little package.

The bad news? The hole in the test steel hood may look sweet compared to the spoiler we end up with on the back for this weekend. The aero balance may be a little rough with the splitter and with the sketchy turn/dip on the VIR front straight at over 160, I can see it spinning out. 10 million Nascar fans can't be wrong...

why would there be any seconds thoughts with a top mount, that is a really killer way to go!

As mentioned before: heat around the coilpacks/wiring/coolant.

Also while all of us are spending cubic dollars to keep weight off the car, why intentionally put 50# worth of turbo stuff in forward of teh front wheels? Aside from oil drain concerns, it seems a conventional bottom mount would keep the weight low and rearward and keep the heat away from all the fun electronics.

Not knocking the project by any means (quite the opposite)...just throwing out a differing opinion. That being said, the topmount is bling beyond words :).

Dyno report:

Water and oil temp are both stabilizing at 180 on the dyno - not sure what it will do with track lapping. Our cooling system and wild obsession with insulation has paid off!

Well today we made 570 wheel before we started losing fuel pressure. Looks like it is time to buck up and do the fuel system with Some goodies from our friends at Aeromotive and get rid of the stock junk. The dream is gone...

Stayed at 180 through the day - rock solid temps. We will just have to live with being down on power for the GRM Track Car Challenge this weekend :(. The goal was to blow by Tommy's Viper - not sure if we can make that happen with the safety margin we chose, but after a little trackside tuning, we may turn it up a little more.

I will have some in-car from the weekend up here next week. Will get the fuel sorted out and then hit it again. My guess is 700 is within reach pretty easily still on pump gas, but I think I may put some street miles on it first. I have seen it sitting for too long in the shop!

What is a wagon without rails? Of course they are going back on. However the rear spoiler is removable and will be. Hood will be painted, likely over the winter when we do a complete refresh to wrap up the project.

VIR - went OK. There was a ton of HP there... We were having problems with a boost reference line and likely softened up the head gasket. I did get a few laps with everything working well. at the 530 Hp setting, the top speed on the fornt straight was about 155. The spoiler functioned as planned - a little drift and the hill/bend on the straight, but not as sketchy as it had felt before...

Next step - convert all vaccum lines to braided stanless, do a head gasket, and clean up everything in final form under the hood. And remove the decals...

Will have some pics and video later.

What kind of times was Tommy putting down? How close did you get?

Archer did a 1:28.401 in the Viper. Danny Popp turned in a smokin' 1:31.072 in his Z06. The Mosler with Chet Fillip driving was 3rd with a 1:33.794. Whitis in the Noble ended up 4th overall with a 1:35.973 (but went faster during a session from which he was dq'd for a spin.) Ryan Hampton was 5th in the 300ZXTT with a 1:35.990.

Meanwhile, James finished a very respectable 11th overall and 7th in class (1:39.734.) Just barely ahead of him (1:39.684, 10th overall, 4th in class) was Chris Kimmelshue in the "deer slayer" black E46 M3 with many BW parts on it. Full results will be out tonight or tomorrow...

Nice work James! The wagon is beautiful! :cool

Thanks again for coming,

Sounds about right lol

Was it a C5 or C6 z06? We had a couple track prepped c6z06's at a test day recently, scary fast cars.

At the end of the video, what was the car he was chasing down the straight?

It was one of the most well-prepped and smartly driven C5 Z06's in the country. Danny Popp is known for showing up and blowing everyone away...

The car at the end of James' vid looks to be the Neon SRT-4 (nicely modded & did well in this year's One Lap of America.)

James wasn't kidding when he said "there was a ton of HP there" :D

I think he works or does work for GM/Chevrolet. I know that thing is always wicked fast at Mid-Ohio(1:28's). Danny drives the wheels off that car. He should get out of TT and get into W2W.

Just a quick observation from watching the video: It seems that James isn't fully into the throttle at the end, and is short shifting. I think there's a lot left in that car from what I've heard...

Of course, and James did beat the SRT-4 overall by nearly 2 seconds on their fastest laps. There's no doubt in my mind that the Uberwagon would be faster down that straight among other places on the track. I was just using the SRT-4 as an example of the quick competition that showed up. :D

It is wierd - revving it out doesn't help due to the power curve. But certainly a few more laps under my belt would help a little to be able to push it into the braking zone a little harder.

Sounds like a jet engine, pretty cool!

I just figured out why you needed a wagon, because I got one first, then Seth got one, and you just coudln't stand it :)

The thermal ceramic coating, blankets, and wrapping look just like the stuff we put on our gas turbines to keep the heat in. Not only will they keep the engine bay temps down, but they should also drive up the efficiency and output as well. The TBC on the pipes should help keep the metal temperatures and gradient down which will help with thermal mechanical fatique. What temps are you expecting and what material did you make them out of?

For the record, I got a nice ride in this wagon and it's INSANE. It's one of those cars where you tape a $100 bill to the passenger airbag cover and tell the passenger he can keep it if he's able to grab it while you row through the gears. And that's the lower boost setting. On high boost you might as well apply to NASA because you'll already have undergone the G-force testing required to pass astronaut school.

Not taking it to TX - just flying down to help with the race and race school this time, then a quick zip back to ATL for the Petit week. We will have the wagon there, but I have a photoshoot scheduled for it, so I have been really keeping it pretty minimal until all those are done. It is in full street trim now with a full interior as well (thanks to a good friend for digging up the black rear seats for me!).

We still have a little more touch-up work to do and then I will get to take it around a bit more next year! We got the hood painted blue to add to the subtle appearance - a couple more spots to touch up over the winter.

I forgot to mention the intoxicating growl of the engine. Even at idle, you can tell it means business. I've not heard a street legal car sound like this before...I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the front of the car when it begins to get hungry for air...you'd get sucked in and stuck against the grille. And of course the sound at WOT is just...words escape me (along with my breath). There's a video on the Bimmerworld PR site here:

http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1130049316&channel=932744381&lineup=-1

That really does not sound like it does when you are inside the car. If you are ever within 100 feet of the car when it fires up, you'll damn well know it.

SICK.

So when the car was brought over to the states, did it have to get federalized first before you could get your hands on it, or did you have to finish up the car before getting it federalized? If you have to get it federalized first, doesn't that mean the car has to be fully functional when it gets off the boat? I don't see how the e36 touring would be that different from a US spec car besides OBDII, cats, and lights.

jamesclay

OK. I just got my title a few days ago, so it is official and now I will share.

I brought the car in as parts. I had it disassembled to a good degree and all DOT approved items removed - glass, lights, exhaust (full driveline really), brake lines, etc. If you do some research online, this is legal but a little tricky. There is a pdf on the US DOT site or safety admin or something that will give you the specifics of what is allowed and what isn't.

Then I put the car together and had it inspected by the DMV officer - it is a rebuilt car, like rebuilt salvege.

So the car was stripped down so it could be brought in as "parts" then re-assembled and titled as a rebuilt?

I saw the wagon at at road atlanta last month, and I was even lucky enough to get a peek under the hood. Its impressive but its very um... i dono the word for it, you defanatly can not call it subtle, its not show perfect at all, it looks like it was sombodys normal every day wagon, only it just had every badass part money could by bolted on to it. those huge brakes behind the bbs's was sex. Maybe its becasue I saw the pictures first, but it was sort of like seeing a movie star in real life.

one day I will get a good job, start a family, buy a nice mid sized house... then abandon the family at disney world, sell the house and every thing we own and use the all money to build a car like this.

btw that was a tough break at that race, and then california... its both disapointing and entertaining for me, I do like destruction but I also like seeing bimmerworld cars win or at least finish. :)

Thanks! We build solid stuff, but we don't plan to win any NOPI shows. I am not into little gadgety deals for the wow factor. I think it still had the trusty watter bottle oil catch at Road A... Now that everything is mostly built, the engine will come out a final time, we will get some paint and final finish work completed, then it will be in a little more presentable format.
