Some of you probably saw my 1/4 post and I was having some tranny issues going from 2-3 and 3-4 during gear change.

Does anyone if the 2000 Z3 tranny will fit a 97 M3? There's a local shop that has one and they said it will fit 3.2 motor.

If you're talking about a standard Z3 (2.8-3.0L), it would be a step back. M3's have shorter gearing so that you stay in you're power range. Plus they prolly have stronger gears. But yes it will fit.

Definitely don't want weaker gears or stepping down.

This is what the shop sent me. I thought the 3.2 Z3 were the M Roadster, right?

Thanks for the input guys. I got the VIN from the shop and looks like the tranny came out of a 2000 BMW M Coupe so it's the same motor so it should fit.

Yes indeed. For what its worth, M52/S50/S52 used the same tranny, and the M50 got the Getrag 220, which is a weak transmission, IMO.

the s50 uses ZF s5D310Z while M52 and S52 uses ZF S5D320Z

I dont know exactly what the difference is.My mistake. Do you know what the M50/e34 ZF is?very weak. my 220 didnt hold 300rwhp for long until i lost 2nd gear.Yeah, I blew out 2nd with 160rwhp. Might be due to shifting, but I shift the same way with my ZF and it holds up great:buttrock

Unless you lucked out with an E34 M50 non vanos, which had the ZF 310Z, same as '95 M3 except has a 228mm DMF and clutch disc.

From RealOEM,
e36M3 until 9/97 - S5D 310Z
e36M3 from 9/97+ - S5D 320Z
e36 328 (all) - S5D 320Z
e36 325 (Vanos) - S5D 250G
e36 325 (Non-Vanos) - S5D 250G
e34 525i (92, Non-Vanos) - S5D 250G
e34 525i (93, Vanos) - S5D 250G

It would however appear that there may be a ZF for the e34, but RealOEM just lists the tranny label, not the tranny itself...

What's the differance between the ZF 310 and 320?

You could only get the ZF310Z in certain non vanos E34s:

01 RMFD-5 SPEED GEARBOX S5D 310Z - THDJ 1 11/1991 23001222062 ENDED
01 RMFD-5 SPEED GEARBOX S5D 310Z - THDL 1 01/1992 23001221860 ENDED

I lucked out with a 9/91 build
