okay so i try to put up my windows today
and i hear this grinding noise in my back
and i thought the window cracked
turns out that the window wont go up anymore
any ideas?

needs a window regulator. Unless you're being literal about the grinding noise being in YOUR back. Then you may need a chiroprator.

i need a regulator on my passenger side window.. what exactly does the regulator do and look like? havent pulled the door panels off yet but if i know what im looking for i can hopefully get my hands on one before removing the panels to fix it.

If you don't know what it looks like or how to replace it, it's probably not a good idea to DIY. Especially on E36s, since they're riveted in.
