View Full Version : For all of you Cali guys e21gangsta 04-18-2007, 12:34 PM i was wondering what performance exaust you are running, and are u still passing smog, are u running headers? cuz every thing i see is not smog legal. blitzed310 04-18-2007, 12:43 PM Guess you missed this thread that 6 below this one. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=730234 BoostedE21 04-18-2007, 01:07 PM I personally am running just a custom exhaust, 3in down pipe from the turbo to a 2.5 in pipe all the way back with a remus style muffler. And no, i cant pass smog, thats what friends are for :D e21bimmer320i 04-18-2007, 01:11 PM im running whatever one came on my car when i bought it--it hasn't been changed it since 78 don't see any need to right now reddragongti 04-18-2007, 01:22 PM from what i've heard (from a friend who is a smog tech) exhaust after the cat doesn't change smog readings, so as long as your cat's doing its job you should be fine. e21gangsta 04-18-2007, 02:10 PM [quote=blitzed310;9279512]Guess you missed this thread that 6 below this one. no i saw this thread but nothing was said about passing smog. because i want to run headers and larger tubing, but i dont want to keep bolting and unbolting a different system in every time it needs to be smoged. blitzed310 04-18-2007, 02:11 PM You cant run any headers in the state of California. It will not pass visual. e21gangsta 04-18-2007, 02:15 PM so then i do have to swap each time. grreaate. reddragongti 04-18-2007, 03:06 PM or make friends w/ certain people... :shifty kdanielson 04-18-2007, 04:18 PM Port your cast iron exhaust manifold and buy an exhaust system from Old Man, it will be nearly as good as an off the shelf header and exhaust and the smog Nazi's won't know any different. ken e21gangsta 04-18-2007, 06:17 PM u mean port the manifold like you would a cylinder head? OLD MAN 04-18-2007, 09:43 PM Sorry I forgot to put in my exhaust thread that my car passed Smog two weeks ago. :redspot The exhaust is a visual copy of the stock one and with the cat and tune-up passes smog sniffer with no problem. Have to remind you that my motor only has 35,000 or so miles on new rings, valve job and new injectors. So if your car will pass smog before the new system it will pass after it is installed. The biggest problem with our cars passing smog is not with exhaust systems unless they are not Cal. certified, i.e. headers that are post period. AlaskaBimmer 04-19-2007, 12:04 AM My Baur would never pass california smog...it has no pollution control at all... up here I get a seasonal waiver that prohibits me from driving it from Nov 1st to March 31st, which is winter and I wouldn't be driving it anyway. So for summer driving they don't care if it passes smog or not. the tougher part here is the date of smog exempt is set at 68 and earlier, and in CA I heard is rolling date of a set number of years old.... OLD MAN 04-19-2007, 01:08 AM this whole rolling date thing is :shifty :confused , one day it is on and the next time I ask it's off again. Right now I believe it is set at 1975 and older for ever frozen. :( If they go back to the rolling date then it should be when a car gets 25 years old?? Or was it 30 years??:help kdanielson 04-19-2007, 08:55 AM It WAS 30 yr rolling unitl the Governator rolled over for the Democrats and showed his belly like a little puppy... My '78 would have been expempt this year. Yes, port it like a cylinder head. Extrude hone is best but expensive. The low $$ aproach is to use a die grinder, cutting burrs and sanding flap rolls. Match the ports to the gaskets and clean up the runners as best you can for as deep as you can reach. ken blitzed310 04-19-2007, 11:49 AM up here I get a seasonal waiver that prohibits me from driving it from Nov 1st to March 31st, Why do they do this? BoostedE21 04-19-2007, 11:56 AM this whole rolling date thing is :shifty :confused , one day it is on and the next time I ask it's off again. Right now I believe it is set at 1975 and older for ever frozen. :( If they go back to the rolling date then it should be when a car gets 25 years old?? Or was it 30 years??:help Yes, right now its at 1975 and older. I dont think they will do any more rolling as cats were introduced in 1976, or at least smog equipment were. I really hate this smog bullshit. There are far more cars that pollute worse then my or any non-smog-passing car. :mad OLD MAN 04-19-2007, 09:19 PM You mean they fail you for that little bump on the hood? :mad That SUCKS!!!!:D AlaskaBimmer 04-19-2007, 11:00 PM Why do they do this? Well Anchorage is one of the 6 cities in the US with a CO (Carbon Monoxide) problem. we are in "non attainanment" by the EPA for CO so as a result we are required to have an IM program, we were required to have Oxygenated fuel but that stopped 2 years ago, and a bunch of other things like increasesd public transportation, more trails, etc... (I used to monitor air pollution for a living up here) so any way our CO problem only exists in the winter when its really freaking cold and clear. Since Anchorage is in a hole surrounded by mountains on thos cold days the cold air sinks and the warm slides over and traps all the CO on the ground and we violate the clean air act. So the IM program basically exists for the winter here, so if you don't drive the old pollution machines in the winter the problem is mitigated since your bucket won't make any pollution parked in the yard... The program will probably go away soon since mainly through fleet turnover emmissions have gone done and no violations have occured on about 7 years. I stil won't drive the Baur in the winter though someone will hit it because it's nice.... there you go a long answer for a short question... BARRY E36 M325 04-21-2007, 03:54 PM I hate California laws. But f**k em. My exhaust is an obvious illegality at night. I get those cute little annoying fire pops. |
