We are thrilled to announce that we have eliminated shipping costs (domestic/ground) on all Peake Research Scan Tools! This applies to the R5-FCXII (and FCXII-16) engine code scanner, as well as the R5-SRS (and SRS-16) airbag code scanner.
Not familiar with the Peake Scan Tool? Read on!
Our cars have a diagnostic port to read engine trouble codes. This is known as an OBDII port (On Board Diagnostics, second generation).
However, you should understand the OBDII codes are limited in what they can tell you about your BMW. All cars newer than 1996 maintain an OBDII port as a universal way to communicate trouble codes. The problem with generic OBDII readers (like what some shops and stores will use to read for free) is that they do not read BMW specific codes. Having the BMW factory code may lead to spending less money chasing down a vague problem.
You do have an option beyond paying dealer diagnostic fees for every check engine light, though.
Peake Research makes a handheld scan and reset tool that will read factory codes, as well as reset the oil/inspection interval reminders. Peake's tools are able to work on cars that pre-date OBDII as well, should you own multiple BMWs.
From Peake's literature:
The R5/FCXII (Scan tool) is not an OBDII device, it is a factory-code scanner. Meaning, it reads the full range of detailed BMW factory codes (which are the same codes the dealer has access to.) In contrast, OBDII tools use a government-mandated, generic code language, and do not read any BMW factory codes. OBDII is not inherently bad, but for BMWs and other European makes, OBDII tools suffer significant limitations. The two most common complaints about OBDII are a.) "unknown code" messages, or misleading codes that prompt unnecessary replacement of perfectly good engine components, and b.) the OBDII device would not reset the service reminder lights.
Our R5/FCX-II resets the BMW Oilservice and Inspection maintenance reminder lights. OBDII tools absolutely will not reset those, as they are manufacturer specific, not generic.
The R5/FCX-II code tool will reset the Check Engine light, Service Engine Soon light, the Oilservice and Inspection lights and the Maintenance Mileage indicator, and it can often reset other lights by association. What that means is that there are other systems in the car that check the health of the main ECU (also called a DME), if the DME's got a problem then the light for the other system comes on too. For instance the automatic transmission light will come on when there is a sudden fault in the DME. Resetting the faults in the DME, which Also reset the Engine light, will bring the DME back to normal status and all systems monitoring it.
We supply a code definition book with each R5/FCX-II, R5/SRS and R5/EMX. Our devices have a small, two digit display screen which displays the fault codes (example: tool shows "F6". Simply look up "F6" in the book to see the meaning of the code.)
