Hello all, this is my first post here and I am in the market for a used X5.

It would be a great help if I can get some information here before spending too much money.

Basically I am wondering if the 01,02,03 models have any noticeable changes with the stock packages.

So, I am looking at an 02 with about 50k miles for $25k and an 03 with about 60k miles for up near $31k. Both have same packages and minimal scratches and stuff like that.

Am I wasting money purchasing a newer model?

Thanks guys any input here would be awesome, it could save me 5g and bring that x5 closer to my driveway.

Would help if you specified which model of X5. They vary dramatically in features and $$$.

Ok well both are 3.0 with the same features installed.(cold weather package, ect) I was just looking for base features being any different in the two models that would make one more superior than the other

I don't believe base features changed much in the 3.0 during those years. In '04 an engine and transmission upgrade took place along with cosmetic changes. The price for the '03 you are looking at better be CPO as it's rather high. I just bought my '03 3.0 with 30K miles for 27K.

Mine didn't come with a "package" of any sort. The original owner just decided to add individual options of his choice like heated seats. Don't know how much these packages add, though. Good luck!

goto consumerguide.com, look in automotive, used, bmw, and x5

they list model year changes. I think the 04's are the ones to get...

Year to Year Changes
2001 BMW X5: No change was evident on 2001 models.
2002 BMW X5: A high-performance 4.6is model debuted for 2002, packing a 340-horsepower V8 engine. This gave BMW a strong contender against the Mercedes-Benz ML 500/ML55 AMG. In addition to aero body add-ons, the new model got 20-inch wheels and a special sportier interior. Option packages got some content revisions this year. The Premium group now included rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control (for the 3.0i), and a sunroof for both the 3.0i and 4.4i. The 4.4i edition could also be equipped with a new Rear Climate Package, including privacy glass and rear window shades. Options included rear torso side-impact airbags.
2003 BMW X5: X5 sees no change for '03 as a revised model appeared in '04.
2004 BMW X5: The new X5 saw revamped styling, a new 6-speed manual transmission option, and a 315 hp V8 versus last year's 290 hp in '04.
2005 BMW X5: Some optional features become standard for 2005 on BMW's American-built SUV. Newly standard for 4.4i is front and rear obstacle detection, which is optional on 3.0i. Xenon headlights, standard on V8s and optional on the 3.0i, are now steering linked.
2006 BMW X5: No significant changes for 2006 X5.
