View Full Version : Good independent mechanic in Atlanta/Athens area
Micah D. Cranman 02-02-2003, 01:56 PM So I was going to a place called Eurasian Motorsports in Gwinnett off Pleasant Hill Rd. I took my car in cause it threw a CEL and had a minor coolant leak. They fixed the leak and diagnosed the CEL as 02 sensor problems. Then they quoted me $800 to do the fix as all four were to be replaced at $150/each + $200 labor. Little did I know that along with the fault code comes an idication of which sensor is acting up, so basically the guy was trying to screw me. :complain
I do a lot of the work myself, but I need a new mechanic that's competent and isn't going to try and screw me out of my money. I'm in Athens, but I'm in Atlanta a fair amount. Any recommendations?
TheBestCow 02-02-2003, 04:30 PM According to Bimmerparts.com - 2 Oxygen Sensors (for exhaust manifold) - $133.35 retail, 113.35 their price. Bimmerzone sells them for $106.68. I used a 97 M3 as your vehicle as I'm pretty sure the sensor would be the same for any M3, but I didn't know what year your car was.
In recommendation of a mechanic, I would have to recommend you David Harrison, owner of Harrison Motorsports. He doesn't do most of the labor, he owns the shop. Website - www.harrisonmotorsports.com
Really nice guy and I don't think he'll screw you on labor. I needed to attach the rear bumpstops to my car for my new shocks (didn't have them when I got the Koni's), and he allowed me to come down on a Saturday (when they aren't open for maintenance, just selling of vehicles), put the car on the lift for me, let me use his air tools and do it myself. Didn't charge me a dime because I was a BMW CCA member, thus saving me about $200-300 in labor costs. Either way they're good guys down there even though their shop isn't in the most ideal location. Oh yea, they're located in Roswell, Georgia. Call them or send them an e-mail off of their website.
Micah D. Cranman 02-02-2003, 04:50 PM Thanks for all the info. I've actually found the O2 sensors for $96/each at Pacific BMW. Car is a '96 M3, by the way.
Looking forward to talking to the folks at Harrison. I actually only need a diagnosis and can do the work myself, but it's nice to know they're so generous. :) Cool, I have a new mechanic!
TheBestCow 02-02-2003, 05:00 PM I don't know how much they would appreciate me advertising the help they gave me, so don't get the idea that I think they will absolutely give you free labor :)
Micah D. Cranman 02-02-2003, 05:04 PM Oh, I know. I'm not expecting anything free. In fact, I just e-mailed to get some prices on work I need done on my car. :D
Ron17 02-03-2003, 11:22 AM John's Creek might be another place to check into. I've heard good things about them...
G. P. Burdell 02-03-2003, 11:31 AM I had a good experience with Performing Imports in Roswell. They did an ATF flush and filter replacement for me earlier this month. A relative of mine also likes to take his car there.

Ask for Ron.
TheBestCow 02-03-2003, 11:37 AM Not to discredit Performing Imports, but I went there for the complimentary oil change (first visit only) and to have them check my wheels for bends. They told me all four wheels were bent, and the dealership in Chattanooga said only the front two were bent. Once I got replacements, the vibration I was getting from 45-65mph was no longer there. So I'm guessing the rear wheels aren't bent... just my experience.
NickRD 02-03-2003, 09:38 PM I would definitely recommend Harrison Motorsports :)
I've been going to David & crew for over a year now and he has done all the work on my 2001 E46 330i...I compete with the ride and he has done tremendous work...
Tell'em Nick with the RD Tornado kit sent ya!
540Rob 02-04-2003, 10:04 AM Harrison Motorsports....
I've been going there for almost 2 years. Does great work, even lets me watch and will explain everything. and the prices are great. I'm making an appointment today to get some more work done.
540Rob 02-04-2003, 05:29 PM In 96 there were 4 O2 sensors... 1 on the header for cylinders 1-3 another for cylinders 4-6 and another set after the cat for the dual exhaust. (I know it sucks... I had two of mine go then the third a few months later.... should have just had all four replaced at the same time to save myself some money and time.)
atlantaM3 02-17-2003, 03:51 PM Buckhead Motorworks (which is actually in Sandy Springs). The mechanic you want is Juston Poole. He is very good, has even done some Euro motor conversions, etc. Bonus is they are nice guys with decent parts prices! I recommend them over any other place I have seen mentioned so far. I am familiar with all the shops named so far.
Micah D. Cranman 02-17-2003, 04:47 PM Thanks for the heads up. :)
