My car has several “light” scratches by light I mean its not as if its down to the primer. The owner before me used a shovel to remove snow and it left a bunch of surface scratches. I tied using a generic scratch remover to buff them out with no luck. Does anyone have any idea of how I can get these scratches out without getting a new paint job? The car is black if that makes any difference.

Most likely it is going to need a good polishing. Unless you want to buy all the products and do it yourself, it may be more beneficial to find a pro to fix it. Do you have any pics, we could give you a better answer if they are clear enough.

I'll be able to snap some digital shots tomorrow, and i'll figure out where to host them. I was thinking about just putting into a detailing place and asking what they can do.

If you decide to go with a pro, definitely see some of his work beforehand. Some detailers are hacks and just fill in the scratch, and don't even remove them! Couple weeks later, the scratch magically reappears.

It sounds like it will need to be compounded and polished.
If they're deep enough, wetsanding will be in order.

Can you catch your fingernail going across these scratches?
After knowing this small detail I could recommend a procedure.

If you fingernail doesn't catch in the scratch, then most likely it can be polished out, but you will definitely need a machine to remove the scratches. As Abercrombe said, you could buy a kit and do it yourself of take it to a professional detailer, but I agree you need to be careful and should see their work before hand. Best of luck to you. :)

Yes you can feel your fingernail across it...The guy at the detailing place said there is nothing he can do about it.
I'll try and snap some pictures later today, i hope i can do something aside from repaint it.

If it is deep enough to catch your finger, you'll have to do a paint touch up. :(

not always..if the scratch is not through the clear coat it can be wet sanded with 1200 and buffed..you would be suprised at what you can take out and or make look a lot better
wetsand the whole car and use a PC on it?
idk it doesn't really matter if you mess up b/c it sounds like you need a respray anyway :dunno
sorry about that
