Unusual. Maybe it is my ignorance, but is that an M90? I didn't realize the US-spec 633's had that motor...

I think that any E24 with the E12 based chasis had the M90. Thats about all i know. The M90 could have euro and u.s. spec version though. I know its a great motor though either way.

I'm pretty sure it's not an M90. Looks like it was on early Euro 3.5 cars only.

From Scott Andrews on RF:
" There was the SOHC L-Jet 3.5 liter with conventional distributor and long C shaped intake runners (M90 from 77-81).

There was the SOHC L-Jet 3.3 liter with conventional distributor and long C shaped intake runners (M30 from 77-81).

And after that there was the M88 and S38, both with DOHC 24 valve heads and 93.4 mm bore pistons."

Also there's this: "The M90 engine was derived from the M49 racing engine. It is essentially an M88/S38 (M635/M6) block with an M30 head (i.e it has only a SOHC 12 valve head)."

---------------

"If it is an early "M" SOHC engine (probably), it is what is known as the M90. Also sometimes called ther "L" block since it typically has a large white "L" on the left side (see pic).

The main other identifying feature of the M90 is the long water jacket along the left side of the engine. On M30's this raised section is short (about 4 inches). On the M90, it runs nearly the length of the block and ends with a freeze plug. This water jacket has "3.5" cast into it.

The other feature that usually accompanies the M90 is the oil cooler. In the pic you can see that the oil filter is a bottom bolt type, but there are also two hose fittings that run forward to a large external oil cooler mounted under the radiator.

As other posts have said, the M90 has the same 93.4 mm bore and 84 mm stroke as the DOHC S38/M88 (M5/M6 engine)."

And this link, also provided by Scott: bmwe34m5.com/node/337 (must copy and paste link - sorry about that - then search for M90)

And this from WH: " A M90 should have 3.5 cast into the drivers side of the block and a 3.5 cast in the head. There could be a "L" painted on the side of the engine block next to the numbers but many times they're hard to read. Heads aren't always a good indication as they get changed often to later models. Check the VIN on the block next to the starter. If it has a 414 as starting numbers then it was a M535i engine. If the block casting says 3.0/3.3 then it's not a M90 engine but a early 3.0 or 3.3l M30. Ditto for any other numbers cast there. 2.5/2.8, 2.8/3.0 etc, it has to be a 3.5 otherwise it's not M90.

Either way it doesn't matter much. Early 3.5l made 218hp, later euro 3.5's did too main difference is the bore vs stroke."

I just joined the site and have recently purchased a 1980 633csi. Had a question. What is the value of this?
Good condition, original paint, runs good, need some minor work, no dents. I might be off topic, but thanks in advance.
