Hey everyone, its been a while since I posted regularly on the 7-series board here. Last time I got kinda flamed for my chrome wheels I put on, so now I'm back with silver ones! I hope you all like them. They're Beyern Mesh, 20". Front are 8.5" and rear are 10" wide. Polished lip.

I REALLY need to get the front lowered. I'm about to buy H&R springs, and hopefully install them myself.

Here are the pics!

Hell yeah they are better than your chrome. More sporty. I like them bro. We got to setup a drive again. We had some fun that last time. Also I can help you install your H&R's I installed mine myself. Fairly simple. Makes the car look a lot better.

Nice!

How do you like the 20" wheels? Did you notice a difference in the ride?

Those are nice wheels by the way. Very, very nice.

Thanks! With the 20"s yes the ride is 100% noticibly more rough, and the wheel wants to jump out of your hands at stop lights where the pavement is grooved from trucks sitting. But the handling is MUCH improved over my old 16". Also, my very wide (255 front, 275 rear, possibly soon to be 295) tires play a part in the "tramlining". Overall I'm very happy with them. The handling vs. comfort tradeoff is acceptable, and the style is unbeatable.

Thanks for your comments. Your gasket thread inspired me to DIY my head gaskets!

That's funny because I figured my little project would deter anyone from doing such a thing.

I mentioned this in Dave's thread, but you have got to start a new thread and post all of those pictures.

I'm dying to ask you questions about it, like how did you do your own timing chain, were you able to disconnect the exhaust headers before removing the cylinder heads, and aren't those freaking cylinder heads heavy!

Hey plik!

For now, I can link to the Bimmerboard threads. It'll take me a while to save all the pics to BF and post them. There were two main threads, this has kind of been a saga over there :)

To answer your first few questions, the timing chain I just wired into place onto the sprocket in a few places on each cam. I always had one sprocket attached to its cam, and therefore knew where the chain was supposed to properly be.

I did not unbolt the exhaust manifolds from the heads, rather I followed your route and disconnected the exhaust manifold from the exhaust pipes that flow down to the underbelly of the car. MUCH easier this way. As you can see in the pictures, I had an engine hoist to ge the heads out. The "heaviest" lifting was just a result of the heads being caked on the block from 135k miles. Once they were loosened with the help of the hoist, they were managable.

Fire away!

Looks like you had some serious sludge. Did you have the heads cleaned and machined? And how did you clean off the old gasket? Did you put in new valve stem seals? How long did it take you? What was the total cost? Did you find that you had to buy a few new tools? And after taking everything out did you realize that there were parts that you needed that you didn't order?

So you removed the cams before pulling the heads so that they could stay attached to the chain?

Yeah, there were major sludge problems. I didn't have the heads cleaned or machined, I am just running AutoRX through and it is working like a charm. I keep changing my oil frequently and putting new AutoRX in and I can see the difference after each oil change.

Which old gasket are you talking about? Head or valve cover?

There are new valve stem seals in. It took me about 3.5 MONTHS (yes, months) but it was working strictly on Saturdays and some Sundays. I am going to school about an hour from my house where the car was. I could have probably, with the right tools and parts, had it done in a week.

I had to buy a new socket set and tons of extensions. I also got the magnetic wand with the light and a mirror, and other misc. hand tools. Nothing I couldn't easily find at Home Depot.

The only parts I didn't order right away were the spark plug wires. After I got it all back together I STILL had misfire codes. I had my mechanic replace the wires (I was too worn out to do it) and the codes have cleared and I am check-engine-light free for the first time since I've had the car!

Car looks hawt! Very nice.

The first few pics where the car is facing the fork in the road look like the car is just trying to decide which way to get sideways ... make those tires an even lower profile! :)

Yeah I had the whole car repainted and clear bra'd the hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, door hand cups and behind the rear tires on the bumper. I had just waxed it, so I think thats why the line is so visible in those pictures, its usually not! :)

Very, very nice! See, with the nice(r) weather now and seeing pictures of everyone's clean cars w/wheels, it's giving me the itch. I suppose I need to stop procrastinating about which wheels I want and just go get them...lol Matter of fact, yesterday, I saw another 7 at a light, with some chrome. Didn't look too bad, but most of the chrome (imo) is a little too busy for me.

Only thing I'm really undecided about is whether to go with 19's or 20's. Been reading all the info in here, which has been helpful.

Very nice.

Be a bit careful on 295s because wheel offset will be very important and some here who have gone with that width have had some rubbing issues...

Great looking car you have there Buck:alright As for those 295's, I wouldn't recommend it. I have 20's and 275's is max that I can go without rubbing.

if you like chrome wheels put em on, you dont have to conform to what these people on this forum like. u let them dictate to you about "your" car??? be ORIGINAL, like Audi says, "NEVER FOLLOW"

Nope no one dictated anything. I just didn't feel the chrome anymore. Maybe a year from now I'll want them back on again. Just thought I'd post some pictures for other people to see how they look. When I was buying them I tried to find pictures of E38s with Beyern's and only found a few.
