I have a 99 M Roadster, and I'm in the process of upgrading the sound.

Today I removed the speakers behind the seat, only to discover that they are not 4 inch, not 3 inch, but 2.5 inch speakers. The car has the HK premium sound system, and these are 3 ohm, 2.5 inch diameter HK speakers.

Has anyone else replaced these speakers?

I can't find any aftermarket 2.5 inch speakers at all.

I've found lots of how-to's for replacing the 3 inch and 4 inch speakers in my car, but haven't found one that deals with this 2.5 inch speaker. With the way the trim piece is situated, I'm hesitant to just get a 3" or 4" speaker and start cutting into and drilling new holes in this plastic trim piece, as it is kind of flimsy, and I'm not sure if it would mount the speakers solidly enough.

I can't find anything on removing this plastic trim piece either, to get to the metal underneath, all the how-to's I've found deal with different setups, and therefore different trim pieces. This trim piece is large, and bolted in in a couple of different places, and would not easily come out.

*edit* On further inspection, there is no metal underneath. It is only this plastic trim piece, with a 2.5 inch hole in it for the speaker. *edit*

Can anybody help me?

Thanks.

I never did find a how-to on this, so I decided to write up my own experience on replacing these rear 2.5 inch speakers.

Okay. I tried to link to it, but it said I didn't have the permissions to post a url. So if anybody is interested in this how-to, just email me or pm me.

If you will continue to use the OEM amp, BSW has a 2.5" midrange replacement for your car.

Wow.

I'm sure those are very fine speakers, but I ended up replacing mine for under $20 shipped for four new ones.

Compared to $110 for that BSW pair, I think I'm ahead of the game for now.

Granted, I'll have to change the ones I put in when I upgrade the amp, but the same is true of those $110 BWS ones, so I'm pretty happy with what I have now.

Thanks for letting me know about those, though. I wonder why they never came up in all of my googling for 2.5 inch speakers.

That is odd about the google searching, thanks for letting us know!!

Might I ask, are these brand new OE factory midrange speakers you found? I have yet to see any dealer selling midranges new that are cheaper than ours. Good luck, though. Glad to see you found something that will work or you.
