View Full Version : LUG Bolt/Spacer Help
99MPower 04-05-2007, 03:44 AM Posted up in the tire section and didnt get any help there so I'm posting here, as I know a lot of you guys run spacers, and need new lug bolts.
I have a E36 M3, with the ground control track/school kit and motorforce camber plates. I picked up a set of SSR Comps in 17x9, but unfortunately cant remember offset. I believe they are 40 though.
I was told I needed 10 to 15mm spacers up front for them to fit properly, and was able to find a set of used 15mm H&R spacers pretty cheap. Don't think the rears will need spacers, or at least that's what I've found during my searches.
What length lug bolts do I need to get to run the spacers, and is 15mm too big for this setup, if so what SHOULD I get? Thanks for the help
jayhudson 04-05-2007, 09:17 AM I would bet most racers run studs and nuts, not lug bolts. Check with provider of stud kit to see what size spacers they'll accomodate.
I got mine from RRT. Not sure but I think they're 80mm.

fatboycowen 04-05-2007, 10:38 AM I went with the Vorshlag kit. They have a kit with 80mm studs for the front, stock length for the rear, and the lug nuts. Its fairly inexpensive too. Works well for me.
M3 Pete 04-05-2007, 02:38 PM If you don't use studs, Rogue sells spacers with proper size lug bolts, and it's probably the cheapest way to go. The only downside is that they are shiny silver, not black like the stock bolts.
John in Houston 04-05-2007, 03:15 PM If you are going to be changing wheels with any frequency (ie: Street vs. Track) do yourself a favor and upgrade to a set of studs. Lug bolts suck hind-tit... seriously. Much easier / faster / less work to utilze studs.
DatATX 04-05-2007, 03:21 PM I run a similar suspension setup (GC race camber plates, ut TC Kline DA coilovers) on the front. To clear the strut housing when I run 235/40 RA-1s, I use 12mm H&R spacers w/90mm studs. Probably could have gotten away with 10mm spacers though...
mikeo 04-05-2007, 03:30 PM I have the same setup as you and to mount 245x40 Hoosier A6s I need 15mm spacers in the front (my SSR 17x9 are et45 offset). Lugbolts (there is a reason I don't use studs) need to be a minimum of 63mm or max of 70mm (that is overall length). I was surprised to find that I needed 5mm spacers in the rear also, lugbolts for these are 56mm in overall length.
Pete at TCKline Racing will fix you up if you tell what size spacer you're using.
99MPower 04-07-2007, 05:51 AM MIKEO that is PERFECT, exactly what I was looking for... I have not installed any of this stuff yet, as I am currently deployed with the US Navy, and have been ordering piece by piece as the months roll by... You said you needed a 5mm spacer in the rear though with 17x9 SSRs, on the GC track/school kit... what camber you running and other specs..
thanks for the help everyone
mikeo 04-07-2007, 09:19 AM First, thank you for serving our country in the Navy during these trying times.
Alignment
Front track setting GC street camber plates set to -3.5 deg each side and 1/8" toe-OUT. When the plates are adjusted back to street settings I get somewhere around -1.75 to -2.0 with about Zero toe.
Rear: track and street is set to -2.5 deg L&R, with 3/16" toe-IN
These are GC recommended settings and they work very well at the track. On the street you will get some accelerated inside tire wear, but I've been reversing tires on their wheels halfway through the lifecycle on BMWs for years.
Keep in mind I have a 4-door, which changes the shape of the rear fender well just a tiny bit, IMO. A coupe may not require the same spacer in the rear, but I would think it's pretty close to the same. et45 offset is too much with a 9" wide wheel, IMO, and puts the tire too far into the fender well. Therefore the need for the spacers.
99MPower 04-07-2007, 09:44 AM thanks... im pretty sure the SSR Comp C 17x9 only came in one offset.. not sure though
I cant wait to get my whole suspension installed when I get back, thread about ALL the upgrades is a link in my sig
and thanks for the compliment on the Navy.. there are the good times, and the bad times, and as long as you get through the bad times ok, it just makes the good times even BETTER

Yeah, I am a Air Force Vietnam vet, so I know how you are looking forward to getting your hands on your car when you get back. I came back to a brand new '69 425hp Corvette 427 from my tour in Thailand.
