I just signed up for my first auto-x event :redspot and I need to get a helmet. according to there site, there requirements are
Safety is the top priority for everyone. Some safety considerations include, but are not limited to, a waiver must be signed and wrist band worn by every one on site, a snell SA or SM helmet with a 2000 or higher rating must worn when on course.\
can anyone help me choose a helmet under $300? The reason I would like to find one under $300 is because the event is coming up shortly and thats about as much as I can spend on a helmet right now.
btw, I have searched, but everyone keeps on suggesting $500<helmets.
Thanks

is this one any good?

Don't buy a helmet off ebay.

Find local places that sell helmets and go try on a bunch of them. Buy the one that fits best in your price range. You can use a motorcycle helmet too, but they may not be acceptable at all events.

I think the Porsche club will loan you a helmet so no rush to buy one if you don't need to, but snell M2000 or M2005 will work fine, SA isn't really necessary but if your gonna do a DE or something in the future it would be a good investment

I use a Pyrotech open face Snell M2005 which I paid ~$100 for. Very comfortable.

I found a M2005 Snell GForce full face helmet last year which was very reasonably priced ($150 or so) and very comfortable. I first tried one on locally after I could not fit a Bell.

I've bought a new Snell M2000 Bell open face on ebay for $50+shipping. It fits me well and has worked well for 1 yr. I do plan on upgrading to a nicer helmet for track days though.

Go by any local motorcycle dealership and try on helmets.

I would highly recommend a Scorpion helmet, you should be able to get an EXO-400 for around $150, and its SNELL M 2005 rated. As long as you don't need SA certification for track days/club racing, it will last you a long time doing autocross.

Just be sure to avoid HJC helmets. They are complete garbage, imo.

I've been using my full-face motorcycle helmets for autocross and track days, but I'll probably be getting an SA (auto) helmet soon. Our local BMW CCA chapter will permit M helmets for HPDE/track days, and the SCCA chapters here permit M helmets back to 1995 for autocross. Only the Porsche club (PCA) requires an SA helmet for track days. My point is, check with your local club/event organizer to see what kind of helmet you need depending on what events you plan to do. There's no need to buy an M helmet now if you plan on doing events soon that require SA, but at the same time, if you only plan on doing events that require an M helmet, no need to spend the extra coin on an SA helmet (they tend to be more expensive)

I use full face motorcycle helmets for autox. way way cheaper.
LOL my new one is an HJC, cheap on sale last years model. $70 I think
Kool flame job matches my BMW LOL
Has the DOT and Snell stickers on the inside.
Still use the Shoei for motorcylce, wouldnt use the cheap ass one on a track or cycle.
For autox OK

I'm in the market for one too. Only problem being I'm kind of tall and most helmets I've used have zero head clearance so I'm pinned between the roof and the seat. Can anyone recommend a good helmet that will maximize my head room?

Well thats one option...only thing is I daily drive my car and racing seats aren't the most comfortable.

Good helmet tech:

motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/

For a motorcyclist the results of these tests are more important than to an autocrosser. For autox I think it's best to buy the helmet that offers the best visibility and comfort.

I recommend the G-Force Pro Hybrid: http://www.gforce.com/products/helmets/gf_proforcehybrid.html

It is full face so you can use it at a track as well, plus it has a wide view opening which you will appreciate at the auto-x.

If you get a good one they are comfortable. I DD my E30 with a fixed back MOMO race seat and it is very comfortable. Countless trips from the Sacramento area to Santa Cruz and 2 trips to SoCal and back with no issues.

I bought my G-Force open-face SA2000 helmet, last year, from Saferacer.com. It was $99, on sale, at the time. I have both full-face and open-face helmets, and prefer the open-face for autocross. It offers me better vision, is cooler in the summer, and at the early spring and late fall events, when the weather can be cooler, I don't have a problem with my glasses fogging up, which they used to do with the full-face helmet. A nice feature of the G-Force open-face helmet is the visor, which has a tinted insert that is very effective when racing in the early morning or late evening when the sun is low and in your eyes.

I found the G force helmets offer a little more headroom than the Bell or Pyrotec. The G force has a wider but less tall profile. Also I would go ahead and get a SA rated helment because if you ever decide to do a DE most clubs I know are using only SA rated helmets. Why spend money on a M rated only to have to buy another helmet down the road?

I checked out the Zamp Rz-3's today and I really liked them. Fit very well, lightweight, wide eyeport, predrilled for hans.

I have and RZ-3, sport. Very nice, reasonably priced helmet. DI is also very good place to work with (their NJ location is 15 min away from me), bob and and I beleive the other guy there I've dealt with is aaron. They defiantly make sure you getting what you need and that it fits properly, like the other guys said try on a lot of helmets. Helmets vary greatly from manufacturer to even model, what's comfortable for one person may not be for another.

If your not going to go past auto-x, an open-face G-force should do you fine (I think they're around $100) or if you ride a motorcycle, just buy one and use it for double duty (It'll probably have better visibility than a full face car helmet anyway). If you track you car some clubs are starting to NOT allow M snell helmets and are requiring SA snell ratings, so if you want to take it further it may worth while to pick up something more substantial it'll be on your head a lot longer than at an auto-x, your head will be thanking you for picking up something more comfortable (I had to use some ill fitting helmet @ a karting track once, I seriously needed some advil when i was done)

I second Driving Impressions is a great place. We've known Bob for a long time, he's a good guy, and has some great stories, as he's been in the business a long time, including before the OMP USA importer for many years. Now they are heavy into Sabelt, and have their own line of equipment. Not only that, but they have a store in the Lime Rock Paddock, very convenient.
