Ok, fiddling with my convertible top motors and such, and I followed the instructions in the PDFs on how to re-connect everything. So, I reconnected the top motor and the lid motor.

Now, the convertible top button has an arrow pointing to the front of the car and one pointing back. I assume the one pointing back means "drop the top" and the one pointing forward means "close 'er up". Correct me if I'm wrong.

I reconnected everything, and closed the lid. Mind you, the top is now in the open position, where it is stowed in the compartment and the lid is closed. I press the "drop the top" button and nothing happens. I press the "close 'er up" button and I suddenly hear a loud grinding noise coming from the lid motor. It almost sounds like the gears are mising each other or slipping or something. It causes the lid to lock down and everything. The top motor never does anything.

Is this a good sign? Does this mean my auto top might actually work? Am I screwed?

Sorry if this is a repost, but I searched and searched and found nothing related.

You didnt reconnect the motor all the way. it's only half way in. so lower the top shut the tonneau cover, put a back pack(weight) and then open the trunk, connect the motors.take the weight off the cover and press and hold the up button i believe. and the top will suck down and continue closing (this is with the key in the 2nd posistion, not running. and keep pressing the up button and the top will shut. :D

Having a 2nd person pushing on it has the same effect.

I think it's the middle and passenger sides of the lid that need the pressure...right?

Well, I know about that whole deal because I have to push on it to make my trunk open.

Thanks for the help fellas.

Ok, well, I tried that and I still get that awful grinding sound.

When I pull the motor back into place, it snaps in very nicely and holds tightly in place. I think the computer is confused or something because the top is down and the lid is closed, but it seems like it keeps trying to close the lid even further and in turn it's just resisting against the bars in there, hence the grinding. When I press the button in either direction, it sucks the lid down and locks it and just starts making the noise. It never starts moving in the other direction.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

well, maybe this is late but....

i had the same problem, and i was under the impressions that the gears inside the motor has gone bad.

i dis assembled the motor and i went to a workshop that does gears and stuff.

i told him about th gears and he checked the interior of the motor and he pointed to the gear connected to the motor itself (from the inside) mentioning that the base thats holding the gear is loose.

he offered to rebuild the base for a very reasonable amount of money.

try and check yours, if you find that the gear is moving then you have a problem. the gear should be tight and firm to be able to pull the lid.

mine was fixed.
