View Full Version : Ramps or Jacks for Oil Change? bscepter 04-03-2007, 11:27 AM I want to change my oil, but the thought of driving up a pair of ramps kind of scares me... is there a jack that would be better, easier? Smilez@EuroDyne 04-03-2007, 11:28 AM HONESTLY all you need to do is use the jack on the driver side lift her up and you would be able to reach the drain plug. I do it all the time. bscepter 04-03-2007, 11:30 AM HONESTLY all you need to do is use the jack on the driver side lift her up and you would be able to reach the drain plug. I do it all the time. seriously? does the oil still drain evenly and not pool in the pan? Smilez@EuroDyne 04-03-2007, 11:36 AM yup i do it on the driveway which gravity helps :), able to drain out all of that i know because when i feel it back up i need 6.5qts bscepter 04-03-2007, 11:39 AM yup i do it on the driveway which gravity helps :), able to drain out all of that i know because when i feel it back up i need 6.5qts lol. genius. i have a flat driveway, though. maybe a floor jack and a pair of jack stands, eh? i just worry about driving over the ramps! Smilez@EuroDyne 04-03-2007, 11:41 AM well you can come down to CA and use my drive-way :) not sure never tried it but maybe lift the car high enough and slide the ramps under since you can't lock the front wheels. bscepter 04-03-2007, 11:43 AM well you can come down to CA and use my drive-way :) not sure never tried it but maybe lift the car high enough and slide the ramps under since you can't lock the front wheels. hmm interesting. i'll have to give it some thought! Smilez@EuroDyne 04-03-2007, 11:51 AM it's really easy shouldn't have no problem. In fact it was easier than my ford escort. betozam23 04-03-2007, 12:59 PM I just changed my oil and I used a jack. Easy. It was also on a flat garage. aNoodle 04-03-2007, 01:24 PM I have ramps, and they are not scary to drive up. But I just use a jack on the passenger side to reach the drain plug. Then I lower the car back down so that it all drains out. I think with it up on the ramps you don't get all the oil out. WebDev 04-03-2007, 02:16 PM I wouldn't use just a jack to support a car while you are under it. Either use jack stands after jacking it up or just use ramps. I use ramps for my 540i to change the oil with no problems. bscepter 04-03-2007, 02:21 PM thanks, guys. i think that a couple of jack stands may be the way to go. zx6star 04-03-2007, 03:00 PM I just got done changing my oil without having a single drop hit the ground or having to jack it up. I used an oil extractor and just syphoned it out from the dipstick. A 6.5L extractor costs around $70 but it is so worth the convenience factor. When you take into consideration that the Oil Filter is right on top it's so easy to do everything. If you want more info about what I did or any questions feel free to PM me. bscepter 04-03-2007, 03:23 PM I just got done changing my oil without having a single drop hit the ground or having to jack it up. The extractor doubles as a vacuum bleeder for brakes too! I love mine...the ability to do an oil change topside with no jacking of the car is brilliant! alken 04-03-2007, 04:29 PM As mentioned, never get under a car only supported on a jack. Always use quality jack stands or ramps. For conventional oil changes, I prefer ramps. We do carry a variety of jack stands, though. Always good to have. You can 5'1" and still not use jack stands or ramps. :rolleyes Are you trying to say your can reach the plug without lifting the car at all?? If so how do you not make a mess when all the oil leaks out? Getting up on the ramps is much easier (and quicker) than getting up on jackstands bscepter 04-10-2007, 09:58 AM As mentioned, never get under a car only supported on a jack.
