I decided to take my Coupe to work today and enjoy our recent warm weather. A mile into my commute on the highway I have a new Mustang GT riding me rocking his car back and forth inside the lane. I had a line of cars in front of me and brushed it off. After a solid 10 minutes I became frustrated, especially when he started flashing his lights. We're in morning traffic poeple... there isn't anywhere to open up and we're stuck behind miles of cars. Regardless, its a good morning and there isn't any reason to be defensive. I get over to the right lane and let him pass. But he doesn't pass, he pulls up reeeeaaaaaal close and starts revving his engine. I look over and he has a sh*t eating grin on his face. I pay no attention and I hear him yell "pussy" out his window and he drove away shaking his head. He's already got 20' wheels & a massive Broncos sticker on his new ride

I stopped off at the printers and picked up some documents I had made. Then headed to work.

Guess who's car is parked out front? Yellow mustang... new plates, same wheels, and bronco sticker.

Get into my office and he's sitting in my lobby. Go to my desk... receptionist calls me "your 9am interview is here to see you."

Kid never even had a chance. I don't care if he had a masters and only wanted $5 an hour. Not joining my team.

I held back the desire to make a little comment, but I held to myself.

IN the end.... be careful who you're racing or challenging. If you're selling your car, looking for a new job, or trying to network... be aware that it could be used against your favor.

Be safe fellas. Keep it on the track or the empty roads.

If you own Yellow Mustang GT with new plates in Denver, 20' inch wheels, and a Broncos sticker... sorry, you didn't get the job.

So tell us about the interview. What happened? Did he know it was you? What was said, if anything?

COME ON !!!

I don't think racing or challenging is bad necessarily, but yelling, 'PUSSY!' out the window and flashing headlights IS bad.

I would have looked at him, shook my head, and walked him outside, where my car would be parked directly next to his.

I would have said, "Hold on a second, son." And wrote down on a piece of paper, "LOL" in big letters, folded it up, and told him to put it in his pocket and open it when he gets outside.

It was really tempting to say something, but my personal integrity told me to keep it all business. I was certain he'd recognize me when we started talking... we were only a few feet away.

He was applying for an entry-level marketing position (direct mailing, email campaigns, brocheures, etc...). I just kept to the same interview questions (what are your strengths... what are your weaknesses). He was clean cut & dressed in the typical "my first suit for my first real job interview." I almost had to say something when he said he was running low on money and was very motivated to find work. I'm sure he left here thinking "I nailed it." He'll call back and inquire...

My Coupe is parked in the front of the building in the reserved parking section. He couldn't have missed it on his way out of the building.

You guys think I should've said something?

Heh, reminds me of my first day at my new (current) job. I had been hired after 4 rounds of interview, and was very excited to start. Since the job required a move to a new town, I didn't really know the roads all that well. So I'm headed in, and I realize that I need to be in the turn lane, now. I look in the rear view and there's a Taurus back there with barely enough room for me to squeeze in, so I cut him off. Total d*&k move, but I didn't want to be late on my first day. Well, I turn into the parking lot, and so does the other car. Turns out it was the CIO of my company coming by for a site visit. Crap.

Thankfully for me he's a car guy with a good sense of humor.

You should leave a message on his home phone & tell him (since you didn't tell him at the interview) what his actions have gotten him.

"Upon review, you gave a [decent/whatever] interview, however, someone who screams obscenities out his window after trying to bully someone into racing isn't the type of team member we want."

He will feel ashamed, embarrassed, and I guarantee you that he will think twice the next time it happens.

Shoot..he could have at least apologized.

Employment these days can be extremely litigious, so I have to watch what I say and do. If I'm interviewing a female I make sure my receptionist is in the room listening. Its a nightmare... I'd like to talk to him about it, but I don't want to cross that fine line. Also, I didn't want to come out after work one day and see my car defiled.

Could you see me in court, "but judge, he called me a pussy on the highway!"

When I walked in the door I was certain he'd recognize me. He was pretty nervous, but he had just seen me 30 minutes beforehand.

"C'mon man, I was only trying to get to my interview on time!!!"

I don't think you should ever bring it up with him WRT the "incident" on the freeway. Let him sit there and stew and think about it. It's not like he's going to actually learn anything from this.

I've actually got a not quite so related story about an interview. We were looking for a new senior creative for the department, and after hundreds of resumes and stacks of crap, I came across one that had put on his resume that he was in the local VW club and had auto-crossed. It caught my eye. Brought him in for an interview, we hired him in 2 weeks. Now we go karting regularly and he beats me more than half the time, and it turns out to be one of the best hires for the department.

You never know who's reading your resume. Especially in the high tech industry you may come across a lot of car enthusiasts. Anything to break the ice or open the door man. I'm going to put a picture of my MZ4 Coupe on the track on the cover of my marketing kit. :D

Well, he drove a Mustang and you drove a BMW. I don't think it would have worked out anyway.

You should have at least questioned him as to what he was thinking when he was trying to race you -in traffic- I have had Mustangs do that before and it really is annoying. And then, why the obscene comments?

You had his car anyway, and definately in the twisties.

You did the right thing legally by not bringing it up. Someone I personally know sued over an employment interview. The company settled and he bought himself a nice place in downtown chicago with the money. He gloats that he never worked at the company but got a FAT check from them. Exercise restraint. Don't open yourself up by sending him a taunting note or anything like that.

heartcoldfusion
04-09-2007, 04:27 PM
I agree - it's probably a better idea not to bring it up. You can get an idea of his personal character (although I'm not sure if that kind of attitude is perfect for a marketing guy (wink wink)) from the way he acted, and he sucks. Even though it would have been so satisfying telling him you were the 'pussy' it's much better to keep it professional and not abuse your position with personal feelings.

Perhaps revenge could have been as sweet as telling him during the interview that the marketing job you're applying for does require some light driving to deliver advertising material or some other BS that's pertinent to the job.

Send him on his way with a UPS/Fed X letter envelope with instructions to call your office to report his arrival.

"I see you made it on time. I trust there were no problems or issues during your drive?"

"Good. Now please go ahead and open the envelope."

You know, after having just gotten fired for political reasons (boss didn't want to share the commission i created with me any longer) hearing this feels GREAT. People with ethics these days are rare and greed seems to rule most people.

I have many ways I could get back at him and totally sabotage all the accounts I created (without getting myself into trouble) but am going to focus on moving forward and creating new success. I have to admit though that I keep thinking and hoping that karma will catch up with him.

Reading about something like this is inspiring ;)

Great story and even though I don't know you, I have alot of respect for you. You handled it right, it would be very gratifying to make sure he knew, but you did the right thing. He'll learn his lesson, it's not your job to help him. Not to mention revenge, even if successful is still negative energy. I think any truly successful person knows you want to stay away from that.

YES!:lol
Or at least comment on his car. "So I saw that Mustang you got there in the lot. It looks vaguely familiar for some reason..."

But seriously, I love this story. In a world where these kind of people are glorified (Or at least it was this way when I was in school) get what's coming to them.

But legally, I don't think you can be sued for not hiring him solely due to the highway incident. The highway incident was some background on his true personality. But it's when you abuse your power by rubbing it in his face solely for revenge, that's grounds for lawsuits.

:lol Oh man, that's a good one. Had me laughing pretty hard.

To the OP, great story!

I remember leaving a previous employment... as I was merging onto the highway I saw what looked like the front end of an e46 m3 come up behind me :devillook, I casually downshifted into 3rd. As we approached the end of the on ramp, I confirmed it as an E46 M3 as it came up on my side and I noticed a rather tasteful drop and set of wheels. While glancing over, I saw him open it up so I followed suit and came by him at about 110. By the time we let off I had a good 4 car lengths on him. The next day I went into work and saw the same M with those wheels and drop sitting in a reserved spot. About 3 weeks later I was promoted to his team. Up until the day I left, he still wouldn't let down the Volvo that stuck it to him on the way home. :lol3
