View Full Version : Just applied Ragg-Top, question for those who have used it.........
skylar 04-02-2007, 05:44 AM I washed the car the other day and decided to clean and protect the top with Ragg Top because it got so much praise. Anyway, I cleaned with their cleaner, fully rinsed and let dry in sun for a couple hours. I then put on 3 thin layers about 20-25 minutes apart so they were fully dry each time. Rained yesterday and the water seeps in the top the same as before, I thought it would bead up. Did I do something wrong? Is it supposed to bead up? Maybe I did not put it on thick enough? Any ideas from those who have used this product would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
SouthernBoy 04-02-2007, 07:47 AM The only thing I can think of is that it didn't have time to "cure" before it rained. If I remember correctly, it has to stay dry for 24-48 hours after application. How long did it cure before the rain came?
rphillips80 04-02-2007, 12:00 PM I just applied ragg-top last week and because it was getting dark I was only able to get on one coat before nightfall. It rained a couple of days later and mine was beading up great.
I would think 3 coats would make it bead up better.
Was it windy when you applied it, maybe not much protectant got in to the top?
ZUUD BYE 04-02-2007, 12:13 PM same- weekend of 3/24 put about 3/4 of a can on the ///M3 in one application, beaded up great. bought 2 more cans for Z3 and M3 this summer. seems to me it can't go on too heavy- idea is to soak up & dry.
MParallel 04-02-2007, 12:31 PM It's not the roof that is leaking, but through some old rubbers.
I'll bet you on that.
skylar 04-02-2007, 05:34 PM I do not have a leak, I just wanted to protect my top. It had 48 hours to cure, I am not sure what the deal is. I put it on in the garage so there was no wind. I then put it is the sun to dry after each application. I put it on real thin, could that be why?
nordique14 04-02-2007, 06:24 PM This may sound stupid...but did you use the cleaner or the protectant? The protectant comes in an aerosol can. Should start beading up after only one application. I usually do two coats.

Uhm...did I miss something?

You did not miss anything. I may not have explained myself well. I have no leaks. The water is not beading up on the top, it stays wet looking. It was the Aeresol can that I used. I think maybe I put it on to thin, but I did put 3 coats. Will try again when I get a chance. Thanks

I would think 3 coats would do it, but I always put in on REALLY heavy... let it soak in good in the sun. Maybe that will do the trick.
XJCASPER 06-13-2007, 06:43 PM Where is the best place to pick up this cleaner?
Thanks

Yeah, let it saturate the top. I'm guessing that one heavy coat is better than 2-3 light ones.
Anyone else comment?
lseguy 06-13-2007, 06:54 PM 3m Fabric Protector will achieve the same results as Ragg Top. and the 3M should be easier to find.
Careful with marketing overhype
fallenwout 06-15-2007, 05:38 PM i applied the whole can with in 3 layers with 5mins interval. and this was how it looked after first rain:

qtiger 06-20-2007, 04:12 PM Skylar, I just did rag topp on my car this weekend. Same procedure as you, 3 thin coats. Actually, I ran out on the third coat, so 2.75 coats?
Anyway, 2 days later it rained and the top was soaking up the water and not beading.
I did notice the rag topp was not really penetrating the top, maybe I was too far away, dunno. Anyway, I'm going to try 3M next time and really saturate the top from point blank range.
