View Full Version : Ricer Fly-by's Galore!!
BimmerFr3aK 03-31-2007, 04:10 AM Hehe...
Ever since I got my straight pipes installed, it's been cramping my laid back driving style :) I've had complaints from 3 neighbors, and numerous people in my neighborhood that i drive too fast, when in fact, i've been driving the same speed for months now! and it is always less than 5 mph over the limit! :mad
anyways... now for the fun stuff :rolleyes
I had to make an emergency best-buy run for some cabling...
On my way back, it was around 9:45PM. I stop at the gas station, and the guy asks WHAT the HELL did you put in that thing? :) i just grin and drive off :buttrock
not 2 blocks from there, a guy pulls up in some kind of janky ass mitsubishi with wal-mart Ghetto-tastic™ "chrome" rims! He looks at me, and acts like he wants to race... He can't be serious. I rev my motor to egg him on. Then, when the light turns green, i do what i always do. Launch fairly quickly, but not punching it, and then stop at the speed limit... if you get nailed for street racing out here its BAD news..... The guy flys by me as fast as he can giving me a dirty look... next light, when its clear, i punch it and smoke him :lol
then, i merge off that thoroughfare on to another main road... young asian guy in a toyota camry with a fartcan tries to cut in front of me very narrowly. I don't let him. Then, he tries to punch it. I do too and scare the shit out of him! as soon as i get like 5mph over the limit, i slow down... and he does the ricer "i smoked you" flyby and sped off into the night.. i am pretty sure he got smoked himself--the reason why i slowed down is my radar detector went nuts (KA Band hehehe)... Then, the last one, as i am approaching the end of that thoroughfare to get to my house, an acura integra pulls out from behind me and does a ricer flyby without me even trying, trying to show me that his car is better than mine. Garbage. That thing had a muffler the size of an Über big-gulp from 7-11, and had dents and dings all over the body. I laughed and drove home.
Ah, the joys of a straight pipe.
Jerrysull2 03-31-2007, 04:18 AM Ricers are fun to mess with. Especially when you ruin their egos...
BimmerFr3aK 03-31-2007, 04:20 AM yeah. the thing about the straight pipe is that it's pretty quiet if i dont have much throttle on.. but when i push it oh dear god it sounds like an airplane engine!
PixMan 03-31-2007, 05:13 AM Don't ever criticize a ricer for his coffee-can mufflers or loud stereo if you're inconsiderate enough to actually run straight pipes. Your car is very likely slower now, it's the "Harley syndrome" of aural illusions having you think your car performs better.
It may be slower, but at least it's annoying. Ricer attitude FTL.
P.S. - I see you're in CA. That situ should get fixed by the PoPo soon enough.

The negativity on this forum makes me want to hang myself...
Lighten up people, gees!

You don't need backpressure, go away.
willmtbike4food 03-31-2007, 01:18 PM You don't need backpressure, go away.
backpressure creates torque. However, you likely have plenty of it from a smoooth v8. I'd love to hear that sound in person :D
phantom3 03-31-2007, 01:33 PM who's the real "ricer" here ?

New Ricer? More like "ill kill 99% of the cars on this board and yes, in the twisties too"

lol. thanks. i'm a sarcastic and somewhat humble kinda guy and i would never say something like that.........but again. Thanks very much.
milKT 03-31-2007, 03:22 PM YUP,
you're gonna piss everybody off in Palo Alto,
especially the blue hairs.
A very ritzy little, shopping town.

bmxludwig 04-01-2007, 04:16 PM Straight Pipes FTL :(
antik 04-02-2007, 12:06 AM I just got the pleasure of riding in an M5 (not sure what year) today for the first time and I gotta say... it was damn slick to have that much get up and go with so little noise.
I can't imagine what it would've been like with straight pipes. I was quite impressed with keeping it quiet and laid back on the short jaunt up to 105mph. I think a bunch of noise following us around would ruin the experience.
If only I could've been so fortunate as to have been the driver... but I didn't even dare ask. I was happy enough to be riding shotgun!
series 04-02-2007, 12:38 AM I can even imagine how lound the straight pipes are, I have a dual with quad megnaflows, megnaflow cats, and no resonators and when I go pass the bus stop the kids and parents get scared. Now since it's loud mad people trie to races. I bet those striaght pipes are insane...

No it doesn't. Exhaust scavenging improves volumetric efficiency, and this is what is changed when you alter the flow/harmonic characteristics of your exhaust.

im gonna leave out the resonator and throw a magnaflow on there if i get one more complaint or the PoPo says NoGo tomorrow. yes, i am taking it to the police station tomorrow! :help:D
parents have mandated (since i still live at home) that if its illegal, its not sitting in their driveway. so i have to ask a traffic cop if its legal :rolleyes
anyone know any cool cops in the bay area? ;)

noise that comes out of the straight pipes is ungodly loud, and amazingly fun. it makes you feel like the car is 10x more powerful!
ImportFanatic 04-02-2007, 10:01 AM No it doesn't. Exhaust scavenging improves volumetric efficiency, and this is what is changed when you alter the flow/harmonic characteristics of your exhaust.
+1
Why do people think back pressure increases torque? You have to let your engine breathe out better/quicker, but it also if the opening is too big you actually hurt the velocity of the air.
parabellum 04-02-2007, 10:51 AM Why do people think back pressure increases torque?
Because losing a LOT of backpressure results in a serious loss of low end torque, but may improve HP at WOT.
That is why they call them drag pipes :-)
I went to a set of straight pipes on my motorcycle (Fuel Injected closed loop 1700cc Vtwin) and lost a TON of low end torque. I installed and tuned a set of thumbscrew baffles and POW....all the torque came back, even though I didn't increase the actual backpressure by that much, scavenging was helped tremendously by the addition of a small thumbscrew baffle.
No engine can operate well with less than the minimum backpressure needed...its all about tuning for your application.
BlackHawkRacing 04-02-2007, 07:06 PM u dont happen to have sound clip or a vid of you car do you? very interested to hear it.

I dont think he was saying his car got faster just that it sounds louder and rice rockets were trying to race him and failed. Anyways 540+straight pipes=FTW

first, you live with your parents and you drive a 5 series bmw...
anyway...
if you (re)moved the cats from their stock locations then you aren't street legal in Ca.
BimmerFr3aK 04-03-2007, 01:24 AM cats were left alone.
cops said any exhaust mods that are to amplify the sound are technically illegal in CA. however, there is a 95 DB cap as well...
he said they wont likely pull you over if you have a regular exhaust mod. i started my car up. he laughed, and said "oh yeah, you're totally gonna get tickets with that" and grinned :)
i no doubt pass the 95 db limit although i havent measured. ill prolly throw a bullet resonator in there with a magnaflow :)
