View Full Version : E36 M3 vs Jeep Grand Cherokee
MPD47 03-28-2007, 11:06 PM So yeah.... we're rolling back to brent_strong's apartment after working on his FD up in one of my garages and this e36 rolls up to a light kinda fast, with the driver trying to look all sorts of tough next to us. I have a good laugh, roll up next to him, stare him down and start idling up the jeep. He clearly hears it as he starts slipping the clutch and rolling the car forward just before the light change. Thankfully, I have a bit of experience getting the jeep off the line. So I launch the jeep, not all out, but definitely what would be a sub 2.0 60' as it clicks green on the light in front of us. Tires squeeling off the line, the kid in the e36 is HARD on it and clearly launched too. Unfortunately for him the Jeep has the HO V8, AWD, and is a monster off the line (for a 4000lb SUV). Through second and shut it down on him, had a good 5 cars on him after the 1-2 shift :buttrock :D The road narrowed and he proceeded to ricer flyby on me over the median/turn lane. :nono
MPD47 03-28-2007, 11:08 PM Oh, it was hilarious at the time. The e36 owner was such a wannabe hardass, he should've been in an Fbody.
geftman 03-28-2007, 11:13 PM if only you had the srt version of the jeep.... droool
BavariaMotorist 03-28-2007, 11:18 PM ...yay?
Couldn't we say that about all threads on here?
The fact that this one happens to be about your car doesn't mean you need to be disrespectful.
Good kill. I wondered how those regular cherokees were.
thechadula 03-28-2007, 11:37 PM Someone always has something negative to say if that car on the "losing" end is there own. Haha, im back in my 4.0 grand, and sometimes i pretend its more of a sports coupe then an SUV... haha, non the less nice kill man.
savage217 03-28-2007, 11:42 PM So was this the srt 8 jeep? I am confused to how you beat him if it wasnt.

Light-weight SUV w/ 340hp? If it's a new GC, anyways.
MPD47 03-28-2007, 11:52 PM So was this the srt 8 jeep? I am confused to how you beat him if it wasnt.
Hard launch from a dig, shutting down around 50mph. Pretty easy. Didnt even bother straining the transfer case and axles with a 4 High launch and a taching the car up. The Jeep beats e30's and some e36's from a roll to 120. No, it's not an SRT8, just a really strong GC.
iseedipp 03-29-2007, 12:11 AM I'm pretty impressed with gc's i used to hate on them pretty bad just because my gf at the time drove one and loved it. One day i got to drive her brand new 04 GC with the 4.7 HO. And wow i was really impressed with the speed on it. nice kill, what year gc do you have?
Mocean 03-29-2007, 01:12 PM what year is your GC??? Im guessing you have a 2002-04 4.7 HO? I think its like 265 hp - but 0-60 is around 7 secs and 1/4 is over 15. I have a 5.9liter GC and the two are pretty evenly matched (5.9 does the 1/4 in high 14s)....but no way it would have beat my 95 m3 (when I had it) and it cant even beat my 02 wrx......sounds like you beat the driver - nice kill though!!! :cool
MPD47 03-29-2007, 01:24 PM 2002 with the 4.7 HO. Oh, I garuntee I beat the driver, judging by his stop light attitude, not the car. I wouldnt be surprised if in 4WD-High it gave an M3 with a good driver a run to 60 though.

no doubt - I love GCs; Jeep makes some badass SUVs, I love surprising people off the line in the thing, they're nice sleepers for sure. Most people dont know what these things are capable of...:buttrock
OC///M3 03-29-2007, 02:01 PM Great kill, beating a driver in a car that is faster then yours is always a good feeling.
CountMontego 03-29-2007, 05:10 PM Poor M3, how embarassing. That driver needs to spend some time in a some POS manual and figure how to work a gear box.
scottycs 03-29-2007, 05:13 PM sub 2.0 60', YEA RIGHT
TedRules 03-29-2007, 05:21 PM Yeah, I have one too. Bought it off of Iding SIII. It has a Borla Exhaust and a Cold Air Intake! Don't forget... These Jeeps have VTEC too... No, but really... They are pretty quick.

I have the timeslip somewhere around here to back that statement up.

I love how I posted a funny story about some wannabe hardass in an ///M and immediately everyone gets all up in arms, all I hear is

It's not the story that's bugging people, it's the way you're selling your "Oh snap, he must not have seen my 4.7L HO badge" / "4WD = racecar " redneck hardass mudding-type story to everyone.
I don't buy it - and honestly, neither does anyone else who has the car you're speaking of. It has nothing to do with disrespect to you or your GC, it's just a simple matter of physics. I never have traction issues with my car, and it's dynoed almost identical crank (hp obviously) numbers as your SUV, only it has a 1000lb advantage on you and a 7,000rpm redline (my first/second gear's gonna be way longer than yours - since it was a short "race" it would help a lot.) 4WD would help you for a fraction of a second - then it'd just slow you down, it's not like E36 M3s lay rubber through 1st and into 2nd. I have to try REALLY hard to get my good summer tires to break out in warm/dry conditions.
So fine - I get a kick out of people trying to be a hardass too, and yes, I'd laugh at them even if they had the same car as me - that's not BMW's fault, why would I defend their stupidity because of the badge on their hood?
However, take it for what it is - a story about a kid being a hardass, not a story about a Jeep being able to beat an M3. :rolleyes
...at the very least don't start to generalize all E36 M3 drivers as people that just bitch and moan about anyone who says there's a better car out there.
The whole "not that I expected anything different" remark almost makes me wonder why you're on bimmerforums? Sounds like your hinting at the BMW driver superiority complex cliche BS. :rolleyes ..which would be a little ironic since it says you own one, but who knows.
Seems like you have a lot more pride for your Jeep and it's "monster" V8... that makes as much HP as that kid's decade-old 6 cylinder engine-with 1.5L smaller displacement. :embarrasm
MPD47 03-31-2007, 01:19 AM More like I'm joking around and you're freaking out. Meh.
I'm a car guy, and to be honest, I hate my Jeep, and AWD/4WD (it's for people who dont know how to drive, and I deal with Lake Effect/Upstate winters). The only brand I truely hate is Mitsubishi, and I'm a Porsche/BMW guy through and through.

Seeing as how I was an owner of both an e36 M3 and a ""4WD = racecar ", I can tell you these cars arent THAT far apart. All it would take is for someone to underestimate these SUV's (which happens often believe me) and get a poor jump, or (as it sounds in this case) said M3 is being piloted by a less than perfect driver.
Why should he expect anything different? Every one of these threads has some naysayers going - "BS!!!! That car is waaaay faster according to C+D! NO WAY you could beat it!"
See, these two vehicles are only separated by barely a second 0-60, its not like the OP drives a corolla. Its also AWD which will give him the launch (believe me these things snap ur neck off the line). A sub 2.0 60 is totally believable.
And you're got to be kidding me that you have trouble breaking traction with your M3, what are you dropping the clutch at 2500 rpms? These things will burn rubber out of 1st and 2nd gear all day long if you want it to. If you cant chirp your tires in 3rd...:rolleyes ....c'mon.....oh right, you prob never turn off the ASC...:rolleyes
2002 Jeep GC 4.7 HO 1/4 mile = 15.2 secs/0-60 = 6.8-7.0
e36 M3 1/4 mile = 14.0/0-60 = 5.8-6.0
now, I know 1 second+ IS a lot - if both cars are driven perfectly equally, but to assume its impossible is ridiculous. Just because someone has an M3 does not mean they know how to drive. Nor does it mean that their car is in a perfect state of tune, another major variable in any kind of racing.
The OP already admitted that he did beat the driver - he never once implied his rig was sooo much faster than the m3. Give him some points to adding some flair to his story - rather than just "I smoked this guy, in a car, the other day."
Perhaps you need to go spend some time at a track, and watch sometime. The fastest car (EDIT: on paper) does NOT always win....

How do you win a race without being the fastest? I thought to cross the finish line first, you need to be faster than the next guy.
I think I know what you meant to say. Just being a smarta$$.

You are right. It's a simple matter of physics. But it's just the opposite what you think.
Awd DON'T help you just for a fraction of a second.
We did test where TWiCE less hp awd car won race against rwd car in 1/8mile.
And that was just possible because hard awd launch.
2002 Jeep GC 4.7 HO 1/4 mile = 15.2 secs/0-60 = 6.8-7.0
e36 M3 1/4 mile = 14.0/0-60 = 5.8-6.0

Our test cars numbers were about 6s vs 8s in 0-60mph (not testest).
So there was 2sec difference (on the paper anyway) and still awd won (in a 1/8mile after that rwd went by).
The MPD47 didn't beat the driver. He beat the m3 because awd launch.

Two guys at work have Jeeps. 1 GC 1 Classic C, both POSs. Both owners say they'll never own another Jeep. :dunno I told one guy that I'd considered a Wrangler, he said he'd kick my ass if I bought one of those POS Jeeps.
MPD47 03-31-2007, 11:47 AM M roady, great sig! I've done the EXACT same thing in both the 951 and the Z3 I used to AutoX.

:help I was just quoting times found on the net for the vehicles - 2 secs is a lot more for sure, but like you said that launch plays a critical role in a short run (as in the OPs story).
Lets not forget that the GC may have 1000 more lbs, but also comes with more than 100 ft lbs more torque to get it moving (avail at 3000 rpms)...

Alex, love the new sig!
Deuuuce 03-31-2007, 09:36 PM I ran the old 5.7 in my '91 SHO years ago and it gave me a run through 1st and 2nd. Quick cars off the line.
Funny how everyone's undies are in a bunch especially since the loser did a RICER FLY-BY!!
l3it3r 03-31-2007, 09:47 PM *offtopic again :( *
^dude, I just realized that the 'early warning' thing is what my buddy has on his keychain (300C Srt8)
(which btw, he just put 295/40/20 tires on it!!)
firedwg1 04-01-2007, 02:05 AM I owned 2001 JeepGC v8 4.7 4x4 as my last daily driver, they are SLOW. My new daily driver Jeep Commander 4x4 5.7L hemi is also slow I have them for towing boats and trips off road areas and they are great for that. Did you beat the BMW maybe... or maybe he did not know how to drive who knows.
Jeeps are slow and the SRT8 JGC is also slow :-P when compared to M///
MPD47 04-01-2007, 02:59 AM I dont see how there are still people here asking if I beat the BMW or maybe the kid didnt know how to drive.
I think this has been clearly established.
I launched hard out of the hole.
The kid did not know how to drive.
He launched poorly
Despite having spent a ton of time in tons of different cars and being competant behind the wheel, it takes zero skill to tach an Automatic AWD V8 car up to over 2000rpm and launch it using a brake torque method.
I beat the driver, who was acting like a thug at the stoplight
He proceded to do a ricer flyby on the median at probably twice my speed further down the road.
What isnt clear about this story?
JETBLACK 330 04-01-2007, 01:32 PM what year is your GC??? Im guessing you have a 2002-04 4.7 HO? I think its like 265 hp - but 0-60 is around 7 secs and 1/4 is over 15. 'Niners FTMFW!!!! Torque baby!!!! My best run in my was a 1.97 60' and 14.46 @93.xx.... I wish i still had it... H.O's were produced through 04
Rez90 04-01-2007, 04:52 PM Here's my ovservation.
And i hope i don't get flammed for this.
Some jeeps are fast. regardless, they are torquey as hell and with the right driver and a crappy one on the other end i could see a V8 jeep beating a E36 M3 to 60ish.
Whether this story is true or not......doesn't really matter. I think it is. But many disagree.
But what i've noticed about this forum is (and i'm not saying ALL), but generally the E36 M3 owners are very defensive and tend to get hostile over a lot of stupid shit. A case and point is actually someone i know. He has an E36 M3 and all day long he'll talk about how the E36 is so much better than the E46 M. I ask him how many E46 M3's he's driven and his response is ........
"None, but the E46 is a pig."
and i just laugh.
But seriously, whats up with a lot of you guys? We know the E36 is fast and it's a great car, but we also know there are a lot of faster cars out there.......
But i see people in life and on this forum get so defensive about their precious E36's...........
I don't get it.
