sadly i have the same question on my e36 sedan. I keep seeing answers from guys with split seats. So far all I've managed to do is get a work out.

for an e 36 the rear seat does not have to come out to remove the shocks. all you have to do is remove the trunk side panels and you can gain access to the two bolts that hold them in.
As for the 740 be prepared to get your ass kicked by a car. The seat bottom you just yank the front edge of it and it comes up. From there remove it. For the seat back you have to remove all the bolts that hold it in on the bottom edge of it. Then I think there are a couple of bolts in the trunk. (I could be wrong about those ones though) Then you have to remove the rear parcell shelf, and sunblind if you have one. after that is removed the speaker boxes ahve to be removed then you can get to the strut mounts underneath all the padding. Then remove the wheels and the brake calipers. You may have to remove some control arms to get the strut out. Trust me it's a pain in the ass. The secon day I started at my dealership I had to do this. Thank god I started out on salary.

thanks for that could feel two nuts by groping around in split between seat and seat back any particular place to grab the seat bottom to get it out? any nasty bolts hidden at top of seat found a plastic stud clip behind the seat belt reel holdin parcel tray.....the wonders of a flashlight and a dental mirror:)
