brainprincess 03-26-2007, 10:01 PM ordered 328i with premium, cold, sport pkgs and dealer talked me out of premium sound system with the intention of upgrading it on my own. Now it seems after talking with the service dept, ALL stereo wiring is now fiberoptic and they don't recommend upgrading. I don't know a thing except I know I want a better sounding system. I do not want to change out headunit but willing to do anything else. Please give me some suggestions.

Go back and change the order to the Logic 7 sound system upgrade.:shifty
SocratesBMW 03-27-2007, 10:01 AM Have to agree with changing the order. Unless you're willing to put $4-5K into a real system I don't think it's worth it to not get the Logic 7
brainprincess 03-27-2007, 12:38 PM too late, can't change. any suggestions?

If you just ordered it, how can it be too late? Your CA can get it changed literally up until the day it starts into Production. :shifty
brainprincess 03-27-2007, 08:58 PM ordered about 3 weeks ago, sorry if I mislead you about "just ordering" has already left the Germany and expected to dock in US April 6. Again, anyone with any REAL suggestions. And, I have had the logic 7 in my E320 for the last 2 years and it is not great.

I have the Logic 7. 13 sspeakes and 2 subwoofers. It is awesome. Order it. You will not be disappointed. The stock stereo runs on a CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus. Everything is intergrated and communicates with the DME by fibre optics.
The stereo shop installing your after market radio better know what they are doing and have insurance because if they don't, they can easily do $5,000 damage to your car. There are countless horror stories where the install shop screwed things up so badly, the car had to be towed to the dealership.
Your salesman is an A$$ to give you that advice.
The Logic 7 is worth it!
Wait a minute. The trip computer, outside temperature are integrated into the stock radio head unit. I doubt very much that you can rip out the old radio and install a new head unit.
E92Vancouver 03-27-2007, 09:43 PM .... I have had the logic 7 in my E320 for the last 2 years and it is not great.
Logic 7 is an audio processing standard and not the actual radio. Sort of like Dolby Digital, THX, etc.
The Logic 7 radio in your Mercedes has no similarities to the BMW Logic 7, except that they both use the same sound processing standard.
Do yourself a favor. Take your Ipod to the BMW dealership. Plug it into a BMW Logic 7 stereo and have a listen. You will be quite impressed.
330ci05 03-27-2007, 10:22 PM WAIT! so does the upgraded sound system have to be ordered seperate from every other package?
i got
Premium package
Sport package
Bluetooth
iDrive
Sat radio ect
but i did not check a option for the upgraded sound system so did i not get the good sound system?
brainprincess 03-28-2007, 07:35 AM are any of you not listening...my car will be here in 2 weeks, I cannot upgrade to the Logic 7 nor do I want to. I have had Harmon Kardon in my Benz E320 and it is not good enough for me. So, is there anybody out there that has done any custom audio upgrade?

It comes as an option on 328i's but it's standard on 335i's.

My suggestion is to have $4-5K handy. That's probably what it will be to install a decent after market that will work. Now, you'll most likely void all warranty (at least for anything in the electrical systems of the car - which is almost everything) and you will probably lose functionality of most of the items that are activated through the head unit.
Let us know how it goes. Also, the L7 stereo in the BMW is not even compareable to what was in your Mercedes. Totally different system and set up.

thank goodness :alright
vegaseric 03-28-2007, 02:02 PM unless you're pressed for time, why not either attempt to find another car with the logic 7, or cancel your order and reorder one with the package. since the dealer was nice enough to give you bad information, this would only seem fair. working with the fiber optic integrated audio systems is a nighmare.
jbass524 03-29-2007, 12:29 AM THE GOOD:
I replaced a system with fiber optics in a SAAB Aero that was less than great. It cost me about 700.00 and was well worth it.
THE BAD:
I lost steering wheel controls.
My parking sensor went out and the dealer refused to do anything about it. They said since the electrical system was essentially 1 integrated unit the aftermarket system could be the culprit. This was chicken shit but I was forced to put the factory unit back in to get them to fix the parking sensors.
Just 1 man's experience.

Good advice. And don't compare the BMW Logic 7 to the Mercedes Radio. The BMW version of Logic 7 is incredible!!!!!!
If you replace the BMW head unit, you will lose the computer (i.e. miles to emplty, fuel consumption, average speed, temperature, etc.). You are in for a world of hurt Brain Princess. It is all over but the crying.
brainprincess 03-29-2007, 10:46 AM cannot change order, due here in one week. NEVER planned on changing the head unit, that's why I was asking about some options for upgrading in the first place. Didn't have any idea people would think I wanted to mess with that. Just cause I'm a girl doesn't mean I'm stupid. Examples I was looking for were speaker swaps, subs with built in amp options and even a dsp unit that vendors like Rockford Fosgate make specifically for factory head units. I do appreciate the feedback, my bad for not making myself more clear....

If the audio system means that much to you(it doeas to me), Id bite the bullet and cancel the order. Your car will be sold quickly becuase of the demand. The dealer knows that he wont get hurt. Actually, it would help him. TWO cars to sell. Good luck.
SocratesBMW 03-29-2007, 11:35 AM I don't think anyone is saying you're stupid. We're just curious as to what exactly it is you want to do. How much audio experience do you have? That may help us guage your ideas.
At this time you're talking about adding amps and speakers and all that will do is make the sound you don't like, louder.
brainprincess 03-29-2007, 12:12 PM obviously not as much as I thought. The stereo is important and when I originally discussed it with the dealer I was thinking I could spend the $1200 plus another $1000 and it get a better sound the premium sound BMW offered. Again, I had the Harmon Kardon Logic 7 in my E320 and while it was certainly bearable, not what I like. I based the decision on that as well as the dealer agreeing with not spending the $1200 for mediocre. So, it seems I will have to suck it up or reorder. Have already sold my car and insurance can only be suspended for 30 days without having to go through that hassle as well. Thanks again for the help. But what do you guys know about these folks in Atlanta called Bavarian soundwerks that supposedly specialize in BMW audio?

Understood. Now, we're back full circle to SocratesBMW's suggestion of a $4K-5K install since you want to keep your factory head unit. (and I assume you want the computer and steering wheel control functionality as well)
You'll have to ensure that the installer you're dealing with is qualified to work with MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport). I'm pretty sure these installers will be few and far between.
All of this seems like a very expensive and futile propostition.
