View Full Version : auto-x april 1st @ the meadowlands
BavariaMotorist 03-26-2007, 07:04 PM www.motorsportsne.com (http://www.motorsportsne.com)
How to get started
>>> Register an account
>>> Subscribe to MotorsportsNE in the club dropdown menu. (doesn't mean you're paying or anything)
>>> Go to my garage and add your car, pick a #, and just pick a class. You will be added to class when you get there anyways. Leave PAX blank
>>> Go to events calendar and register for the APRIL 1ST EVENT
*****************IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE APRIL EVENTS, GO TO "MONTH" AND CHECK APRIL. THIS WILL TAKE YOU TO THE APRIL EVENTS. YOU MAY STILL BE IN MARCH*****************
When to be there?
The site opens at 7 AM. Registration starts at 7:30 and closes at 9:15.
If you are a newb, I recommend getting there at around 7:30 and walk the course a few times.
If you show up at around 8, you're fine too. Just be there BEFORE 9 AM!
It usually lasts till around 4PM - 5PM, but well worth it.
I will be there at around 7 am in my black Boxster. I will bring an air compressor, tire gauge & blue tape. (& food for myself)
IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIMER, HERE'S SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD BRING/DO:
- TAKE ALL LOOSE **** OUT OF YOUR CAR. This will help you to not get distracted when running. For the items you wish to bring, put them in a bag (not a plastic bag) and just leave them at the lot. Everybody leaves their things there, so don't worry about it.
- Raise your tire pressure to max. performance settings
- Blue tape so you can put your # on your car. (if you don't, they use some gunky marker stuff to write your #s)
- HELMET. Motorcycle helmets should be fine. If you don't have one, they have loaners. They don't really check your helmets, but it does have to LOOK legit. A bike helmet won't cut it (bicycle)
- Bring food and beverages. It's a long day. You will get hungry.
I recommend you try to get a friend to go w/ you. It will help you pass the time when waiting and it will be a nice competition to see who scores higher :)
Any car can do it. Yesterday there was everything from a Ford Escort GT to a Caterham S7 (cool guy)
If not, come bother me. I'm pretty friendly.
Everyone is really nice and will help you out. Don't be afraid to go and talk to people and make friends. These people are very social and love cars :)
SO REGISTER NOW AND RESERVE A SPOT!!!!
Chris328is 03-26-2007, 08:18 PM What class should I pick from the list ?? My car is a 328is with very little mods . I don't want to be in a club that has really fast cars or really slow cars, maybe in the middle.
What class are you in?
BavariaMotorist 03-26-2007, 11:49 PM Relax bud. There are TONS of cars and many classes and you know what? All the classes do about the same in terms of scores because it isn't so much the car as it is the driver.
w/ a 328is you will be fine. There were ford escorts and ford focuses running out there.
Just pick any class for now. I am gonna guess you will be in FF, so just put FF. When you get there they will class you.
I remember you also had a question about age. They don't ID you or anything, but they MAY if you look really young. I am 18 and I didn't get IDed.
Relax and have fun. If you have questions when you get there, come find me.
BTW: The Miatas spanked everyone. It's not about speed...not at all.
madman23 03-27-2007, 12:19 AM the escorts wooped my ass. but thy got lucky i was running the completly wrong tire pressure and didnt realise that i could bump up the fronts a lot more till the last run. I might go this sunday. hopefully because the mmore seat time the better. Speaking of seats i really need one
BavariaMotorist 03-27-2007, 12:34 PM If you want to go, register. Otherwise you have to rely on them having spots open for you.
BavariaMotorist 03-27-2007, 06:11 PM Bump.
G.J. Dixon 03-27-2007, 07:31 PM I haven't decided yet if I'm going to this event. I have a business meeting out on Long Island that night and traffic is going to be a nightmare trying to get there from the meadowlands.
The NY BMW CCA and Metro PCA are also hosting autocrosses that day out on Long Island. I will probably head to either of them since it will be easier to get to my meeting that night.
Bavarian Motorist, You have a good time at the event on Sunday?

Metro PCA is? Shoot, doesn't say on their website :(
If you can make it, it'd be cool, since I know you'd have a few things to teach some of the newer people who might join us:)
(like me)
If not, there's another on the 8th.
As for my time...
https://axwaresystems.com/axorm/files/MotorSportsNE/03252007a1_fin.htm
I am in class B... towards the bottom of course :(
Thanks for encouraging me to go to this :D I was always kind of scared to try it out.

The Metro PCA event is at Tobay Beach, its not listed on their website, because the date of the event was changed, since it was supposed to be on the day it snowed.
Don't worry about how you are doing compared to everyone else, just look at what you are doing and try to improve on that, and always feel free to ask questions to everyone else and get instructors to ride with you. You will improve quicker and gain confidence faster. The next key to getting better is Seat Time, the more events you do, the more you get use to it, the more you learn, the better you become.
madman23 03-28-2007, 01:27 AM Im in class G with a stock 325IX and they messed up my times. I got a high 41 and they put i got a 63dnf? this sucks
BavariaMotorist 03-28-2007, 08:04 AM what kind of cars compete in class B
Cars like stock Evos, stock STIs, stock 350z, mazdaspeed miatas...
Don't worry what class you're in man! You will not win your first event so it doesn't matter. Everyone runs the same course :)

Thanks sir. Seat time is really what I want. I am going to this event and the one on the 8th, AND HOPEFULLY (if Mr. Goldberg ever calls me back) the one w/ PCA on the 3rd.
I love doing this :)
Hey, what do you recommend my tire pressure be at?
Im in class G with a stock 325IX and they messed up my times. I got a high 41 and they put i got a 63dnf? this sucks
Don't worry. The important thing is you had fun, right?
You were in the silver e30 right? I saw you getting OWNED by having a wimpy, conservative instructor your first 2 runs, and then when you finally got rid of the instructor, you were blazing by!
Vikingus 03-28-2007, 08:43 AM are bystanders welcome?
BavariaMotorist 03-28-2007, 10:26 AM are bystanders welcome?
Yeppers, of course. It's entertaining to watch, but are you sure you don't wanna participate?
Vikingus 03-28-2007, 12:11 PM Yeppers, of course. It's entertaining to watch, but are you sure you don't wanna participate?
Man I'd love to but I don't have my car yet, maybe I can talk my friend into this. I will sure participate in future events. Is there a fee of some kind for visitors?

No certainly not! You come watch for free. These people don't do this to make $$. They just like autocrossing.
Here's a couple ideas...
You & one of your friends split the cost ($20 each) and you can each get 4 runs since you do 8 runs :)
OR
You can each pay $40 and use the same car for 16 runs.
So you'd be paying for each of your participations and you'd take the car out 8 times each.
It's just using the same car twice.
Vikingus 03-28-2007, 12:55 PM that sounds good, I didn't now you could do that... if that's the case then maybe we won't be bystanders after all...
thanks for the ideas.
madman23 03-28-2007, 03:09 PM BavariaMotorist: thanks for that man. I will be there sunday, you can just come up to e and say whatup. im a friendly guy. Normaly most of the people there are.
BavariaMotorist 03-28-2007, 10:21 PM I hope you get better times Sunday :) Hopefully it won't rain either.
Chris328is 03-28-2007, 10:46 PM Do they run an inspection on the brakes pads?
I'm buying new tires this Saturday and my rear brake pads have little meat on them.

They do a quick tech spec but nothing too advanced. Just basically look at the engine and check to see if the lug nuts are tight.
Chris328is 03-28-2007, 10:54 PM thanks
BavariaMotorist 03-29-2007, 10:00 AM BUMP. REGISTRATION CLOSES TOMORROW!
madman23 03-29-2007, 12:18 PM it;s suppost to rain sunday.
BavariaMotorist 03-29-2007, 12:20 PM it;s suppost to rain sunday.
We auto-x in the rain! :D
It will only be raining part of the day. Probably light showers. Nothing major.
Obviously not IDEAL conditions, but whatever.
Chris328is 03-29-2007, 03:35 PM so this means many people won't show right?
GG///M3 03-29-2007, 03:51 PM i would be down, but my rtabs are shot. When's the next event?
BavariaMotorist 03-29-2007, 05:51 PM i would be down, but my rtabs are shot. When's the next event?
8th. Then it dies for a while.
Chris328is, I am sure everyone will show.
Chris328is 03-29-2007, 05:56 PM What tire pressure are you guys going to run. This will be my first time going to an Auto cross ; considering I'm only 17!
G.J. Dixon 03-29-2007, 06:03 PM Hey, what do you recommend my tire pressure be at?
What tires are you using?
What tire pressure are you guys going to run. This will be my first time going to an Auto cross ; considering I'm only 17!
What car and tires?
For street tires, generally you want to run between 38-44 psi
However, depending on the type of car, tires being used and wheel alignment can drasticly change what the optimal tire pressure should be.
Chris328is 03-29-2007, 06:09 PM Eagle F1 tires ultra high performance, they're summer tires
The car that I will be drivings is a 328is 1997 with 17 inch contours staggard set up.
Some people said to run 38 front and 36 rear
or 40 front and 38 rear

Some people said to run 38 front and 36 rear

That's about right, you do want to run more in the front than the rear, for one to keep the front tires from rolling onto the sidewalls, and two so it will loosen up the rear of the car some so there is not as much understeer.
I'd try running 40-42 front and 36-38 rear
Chris328is 03-29-2007, 06:26 PM BMW club racer, will you be at the auto cross this Sunday?
If so, what class will you be competing in?
G.J. Dixon 03-29-2007, 06:36 PM BMW club racer, will you be at the auto cross this Sunday?

Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be attending this autocross. I have a BMW Club board meeting that night out on Long Island, and its a real pain to get from the Meadowlands to the middle of Long Island at night, especially on a Sunday Night.
I'll be going to the NY BMWCCA Test and Tune event at the Robert Plan facility. It will make it easier for me to get to the meeting afterwords.
I would be competing in the SS or Sedan Class with my Mercedes
BavariaMotorist 03-29-2007, 09:54 PM I am running stock tires. :( I have the 18" wheel option.
Chris328is 03-29-2007, 10:18 PM Your car is a Porsche , that beast comes track ready out of the box lol
. You gave me a ride at Floyt bennet feild i was the one that gave you a ride in my black 328is .
Nice car dude..
G.J. Dixon 03-29-2007, 10:20 PM I am running stock tires. :( I have the 18" wheel option.
Ok, I'd try starting in the same area I said to Chris
eeeks 03-29-2007, 10:58 PM These are GREAT people. I ran the autocross school last year with them in my bone stock eta terror...ridiculously fun.
They do run in the rain...hell, they even had the SCHOOL in the rain....Nothing like a little wet slalom and skidpad to put hair on your chest.
My 97 325e ran in Class G. My SC'd 328 is in unlimited *BOO* (its an automatic...and slow...hahahha )
But all said, great group to run with if you cant always get to a CCA event. They run a fairly fast course but very technical too.
Chris328is 03-29-2007, 11:01 PM Do they have good instructors?
eeeks 03-29-2007, 11:06 PM They have pretty decent instructors that are totally willing to ride alongs. Just be sure that at morning registration you let them know.
I have autocrossed before, but always had trouble reading the cones. I had ridealongs for a few of my runs. They were VERY helpful to me. Just remember to keep your ears and eyes open and leave your ego and mouth at the door.
Worked for me.

Oh that was you? Damn! I had no clue! You should have said something! :D
I have an ECU tune now ... car is a tiny bit faster.
The instructors are O.K. It depends which one.
For example, we watched many of the instructors have the drivers tip toe through the course instead of letting them rip it up.
May work for some, but my instructor let me tear it up :D
BavariaMotorist 03-30-2007, 11:44 AM GOOD NEWS GUYS!!!!
Sunday there will be no rain according to weather.com!!!!
WOOHOOO!
It has been reduced to 'cloudy' and 10% chance of precipitation.
Chris328is 03-30-2007, 11:38 PM Niceeeeeeeee
Chris328is 03-30-2007, 11:46 PM you don't get anything if you win right , only respect and popularity lol
BavariaMotorist 03-31-2007, 07:52 AM Trophies.
And maybe something else. Shrug. I'm not sure.
BavariaMotorist 04-01-2007, 06:23 PM :) Thanks for everyone who showed. I had fun.
Chris328is 04-01-2007, 10:21 PM The Auto cross was fun what was your best time. I ran 42.48 with all season tires, and it was my first time running.
Chris328is 04-01-2007, 10:26 PM The fastest car in my class ran 39.6 in heat 1, which was a ford focus SVT, but hopefully next week I might change that. I was running my stock 16's , next week I'll run staggard contours with eagle f1 tires.
BavariaMotorist 04-02-2007, 07:36 AM I did 41.7 best time...I didn't do so well :(
I was 1.5 secs off of a trophy placement.
Lee101315 04-02-2007, 10:37 AM I went to go and check it out; I didnt run though.
It was cold and windy
eeeks 04-02-2007, 11:46 AM cold and windy?
shit...try running in torrential downpour...
Lee101315 04-02-2007, 12:05 PM well, its not a problem if you are running.... I was watching.
BavariaMotorist 04-02-2007, 12:31 PM You newb. You should have ran.
madman23 04-02-2007, 01:14 PM I parked my car right when i finished my runs, then got out of the car and thats when the rain came. Hope everyone in the forth heat had fun on that wet track. My best time was a 41.2.. on my lovley all-seasons
BavariaMotorist 04-02-2007, 02:20 PM SOME PICS
http://www.flickr.com/photos/iluveketchup/page1/
Chris328is 04-02-2007, 04:59 PM In Heat 3 class F a guy with a Porsche 924S ran 37.45. That will be tough to be.I'll need a stiffer suspension.
