View Full Version : First mods.
MaxSteel 03-25-2007, 11:59 PM Seeing as all of you guys have pretty damn sexy e34s I was hoping you all could give me advice on where to start with some mods, nothing over the top, but enough to make it a little more unique. First, I'm thinking a chip (suggestions?) and then from there some new head/tailights (suggestions aswell).

There's where I'm at now. All stock but It's clean.
Thanks
4500 RPM 03-26-2007, 01:06 AM You're in luck, we have the same car!
Keep the amber corners FOR SURE, but maybe Euro smiley headlights.
M5 black rear plate filler.
JC or D'Sylva chip.
BavAuto exhaust tips
EDIT: Personally, just get new wheels (E39 sport with hubcentric rings are best, IMO) then go from there.
All of this will be around $400 without the wheels. Do wheels first.
Then:
New wheels
Rear headrests
Euro trim
Lowering shocks/springs
Don't get rid of the ambers!
clevertd 03-26-2007, 01:16 AM I think what he's trying to use is reverse psychology. He really wants you to get rid of the ambers.;)

lol, it kills me, the mentality that clears>amber, ESPECIALLY on white. How boring, clears on white. :embarrasm

And what a beautiful car you have : )
No doubt Im keeping the ambers, clears or smoked never really appealed to me much. I mean, with a black e34 it can look good but alpines deffinately look better with ambers. So at least theres someone else who shares the same opinion.
Yeah I've heard good things about the conforti chips. Deff will picking one of those up.
Can you hook it with a link to the Euro smileys? I've heard much about them but dont really know much about them.
Maybe you could link up some more pics of your own car for ideas?
thanks again.

Thanks, glad to hear you're not crazy.
The chip apparently (I'm poor) helps out the M50TU a TON.
Dude, I can't stress enough how much the staggared Style 5s transformed my car. Not just the look, but the handling/ride. Less Cadillac, more BMW. THe ride is sharper, and you can feel the bumps (which I like).
Much more aggressive, and people LOVE the lip. I catch people staring at my wheels and smiling. :)
A BMWCCA sticker in the window doesn't hurt. Helps show you're an enthusiast.
M5 plate filler is another great and cheap mod. The exhaust tips from BavAuto aren't gorgeous, but look better than what we've got, and makes it look a bit more expensive.
I'm still on the fence about tinting my windows, but if I put CCA stickers and rear headrests in then I won't.
And believe it or not, with the 17s you'd think it would really need to be lowered, but it doesn't look bad. I'll still lower it, however.
There's a board member from Germany who sells used Euro smileys on the board for a great price ,$210ish, but they're snatched up quickly. Pics, well, find a Euro car with ellipsoids. You'll see the difference. Not a big deal, and I won't do it until I do HIDs. Also won't do front Euro trim until I do Euro smileys, so I can have easy wiring.
Basically, don't do anything Ebay, unless it has a BMW part number. No angel eyes, crystal tails, etc.
Also, order touchup paint. I can see a few bruises on yours. :shifty
I don't have pics of mine with Style 5s, I may snap a few sometime soon. Great wheels, I love 'em.
525fourthew1n 03-26-2007, 01:40 AM yeah i definately second that. keep the ambers (ftw). style 5's (e39 sport wheels) look stunning, and always go a long way.

so delicious...btw, no chrome, thats a polished aluminum lip, i believe
MaxSteel 03-26-2007, 02:30 AM Yeah those wheels look awesome.
how much do a set of those go for? ::cringe::
SC David 03-26-2007, 03:35 AM Yeah those wheels look awesome.
how much do a set of those go for? ::cringe::Perfect ones go upwards of $1.5k, and beater ones like mine go for $800ish or less if you find someone who doesn't know how popular these wheels are. EAT chips seem to be recognized as the best bang for the buck for M50 vanos cars. After that, I'd do a drop with your choice of springs + Koni's, and THEN do the wheels. Otherwise it will look like you're ready to go offroading.
Just noticed you're from the Yay too. There are about 60+ of us in the area. You should check out the CA regional section on here and come on out to a meet. I'll add your name to the long list too, if you don't mind.
Um, how could we all forget to mention the O-So-Necessary Shadowline?
If your not up on it, its basically painting that chrome trim around the window borders to black. Brings a much more stream-lined look and color scheme becomes sharper.
Also you may want to look into 540i brake ducts. As they make the car look pimp in the front, like a lip.
It is OK to go clears a white car, but yellow makes that car much sexier. White is probably one of the only colors where its generally more accepted to have yellow. I too have a white e34, I'll be sure to keep my yellows and sport'em proudly. Clears just tend to look cheesy (ON WHITE!) b/c there is no break up in the appearance. Makes things look too much like one piece. But strangely, silver pulls it off perfect. Black being my favorite ... Damn you SC David...
Redfish 03-26-2007, 04:43 AM third on ambers but drop and rims for sure first. can i get a witness !? !(respond AMEN)
RVAE34 03-26-2007, 08:44 AM I like my clears
525fourthew1n 03-26-2007, 12:57 PM i think clears look good in the back, but keep it amber in the front. otherwise its all white, and boring

Bah, never mix-and match. Yuck.
Silver, and any other gray color are where clears are okay. I wouldn't own a grey-colored car (too boring). Same with shadowline.
I won't shadowline anything but a silver-colored car. The chrome trim ties the windows together...
s_ribs 03-26-2007, 01:03 PM Make sure every bit of maintenance is up to par... then modify. That's the best thing I've ever done.

I like your clears, too.
-1 on keeping the ambers.
DannyH4 03-26-2007, 02:37 PM I like my clears
Yes those clears do look good on your car.
StorminNorm 03-26-2007, 02:39 PM Some clear corners would be hot!!!!!!!!

525fourthew1n 03-26-2007, 03:10 PM btw maxsteel...this was in another thread, im not sure if anyone is buying these, but theyre great wheels.
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/300237744.html
they said its the style 32 wheel, and i believe thats correct, someone plz correct me if im wrong.
not too much money at all for those suckers, so thought you might want to know about the sale.

:alright
4500 RPM 03-26-2007, 03:10 PM Clears make cars, especially WHITE, look impotent. Makes black cars look like a tuxedo, or a penguin, take your pick. Boring, and no contrast. Might as well paint your moldings and door handles.
I don't know how I would have been able to find my car in the snowstorms this past winter if I had clears. :rofl

I actually talked to the guy. I'm heading out there tomorrow morning to take a look at them.. PM me if you want them.
EDIT: I don't need the rims, but couldn't pass up the deal. I currently have 3 sets..
bradhouser 03-26-2007, 03:26 PM A BMWCCA sticker in the window doesn't hurt. Helps show you're an enthusiast.
It shows you are a member of the BMW Car Club of America. You can get up to $1000 back from BMW if you purchase a new BMW after being a member a year or more.
If you aren't a member of the BMW CCA, you should sign up (http://www.bmwcca.org). For $40/year you get a great monthly magazine, local newsletters, and many club activities to participate in.
On the other hand if you only have the sticker and not the membership, it is like putting ///M on the back to impress people.:nono

The BMWCCA is phenomenal.
I thought it went without saying to join the CCA.
Plus, you can't buy the sticker without being a member. It's not like it's expensive, plus Roundel is in the deal. :cool

What size style 5's are you using?
jlcool007 03-26-2007, 10:34 PM lol, it kills me, the mentality that clears>amber, ESPECIALLY on white. How boring, clears on white.
ok smoked front corners (not ghetto black, but slightly smoked, on ebay)
smoked rear [just the amber part, you can get these from umnitza(dot)c0m ]
540i brake ducts
blacked out grill,
front spolier (bav auto has the (dtm's i think) , basically a full-lip, looks very nice)
roof spoiler (makes the roof look longer...sleeker towards the rear... killer)
racing dynamics rd-2's (double 5 spoke in size 18", staggered
that will kill with a 1-1.5 in drop in the front and .75-1 in drop in the rear)
