For my future FYI. What is it EXACTLY that is wrong with the auto tranny's?? I have an 89 525i. If I have one rebuilt for the future, what am I looking for? Weeks points ( parts), upgrades, etc. I have had plenty of tranny's ( American Big Three) built for high HP race motors, all have had inherent weekneses, but they can be corrected. It's just doesn't seem like the only answer is to swap to a manual. Any insight appeciated.

I had the same fears when I bought my 94 530 with 160K on the clock. Although I had the motor redone, I was worried that the auto trans would be next. My mechanic (who is very well regarded) said that it was fine and not to worry about it. He said the fluid looked good and that they were built well. I as well have had the american transmissions and thought that at 160K it was just a matter of time. I think from what I've heard, the weak link that folks are talking about is when you swap in a bigger motor than the original, or add the power modifyiers. For example...if I was to go to the 4.0 v.s the stock 3.0, the general consensus is that there could be longevity problems. If you have the original motor (size) and don't have a lot of major changes (supercharging, V-8 swap, etc..) my understanding is you should be more than fine.

that's an interesting question. If I had the GM auto I would definately be worried, but if you have the ZF auto I dont think its a huge concern. You're right there are high performance autos built for american cars.
