Hi everyone, just got an 07, 328i, black on black.
A few questions...

1. This is my first RWD vehicle. Is it really as bad in the winter as ppl say it is?
2. Can anyone suggest some easy and inexpensive mods that will enhance performance?
3. Need a nice set of rims...suggestions?

1. If you try to drive it on summer performance tires ... yes. If you put winter tires on like a smart person would, you'll be fine.

2.

3. www.tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com) will allow you to shop an extensive list of rims available for your car and even see them on the car before you buy them.

I have Dunlop WinterSport M3 DSST's on right now, drove around town right after a huge snowstorm this winter, lots of snow, slushy roads, and the car handled great. Hardly even had to use DSC--I had more control than I remember having in my front drive Civic with skinny tires

But if I had my summer tires on, I wouldn't even have been able to pull out of my garage...

You should always decrease the aspect be a notch or two when mounting winter tires. The less rubber touching that stuff the better.

If you get a 328 with all seasons, it would be fine. I had Toyo Proxes all seasons on my E46. It went up icy and snow hills like a Billy Goat on steroids.

I got caught in the snow with my E92. It has high performance summer tires. The Bridgestones RE050A RFT's. It was a hairy ride home. Very scary. My E46 with Dunlop summers was the same way. With All Seasons you are good to go. If you do a lot of winter driving, get an extra set of rims and winter tires. BMW's with winter tires are simply awesome in the snow.

I had winters for the E46 and never used them. All seasons were good enough but it depends on how skilled you are at driving in the snow. I love it. It allows me to pretend that I have limited slip and I love fish tailing.

Just bought new Conti Extreme Contacts ( All season )

with RIAL FLARE Wheels- from the TIRE RACK.

Cost $957.00 Mounted- Balanced- and shipped to my door.

You better do it...if you plan to drive in the winter.

Go on to this board and e 90 post.com and look in the wheels forums or the style forums. There are all sorts of pictures of wheel and tire combos. I've seen a bunch and found the one I want, the only problem is I've spent $4,000 on furniture in the last two weeks and I still have more to go...

Enjoy your car! And be careful in the snow. I don't know how y'all can drive up north with conditions like that...

I put a set on mine and they increased the horsepower by at least 30%.:)

What about a spare?

What about a spare?

What? They don't make a Run Flat version?

What about a spare?

My only complaint about this car, other than:

1. No water temp gauge
2. No oil dipstick
3. No factory installed alarm system

has been,

4. No spare tire

I took care of the spare tire problem for my 18" runflats by ordering a conventional tire and wheel from Tire Rack for $185 shipped, mounted and balanced. It fits nicely in the trunk for long road trips when a spare might become necessary for tire failure or damage.

I have an E36 325is with no asc, and I drive my car fine in the winter. My secret is Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2 tires. Best snow tire in the world in my opinion. They were as quiet and more comfortable than my dunlop sport tires and the tread wear is great plus the most obvious reason, excellent winter traction! I highly recommend these tires.

Your BMW dealer sells them in the Parts Department. The part number is
82 120 398 334. They list for $32.00 each, but you can find them cheaper on Ebay.

That's crazy!!! When was the last time you had a flat due to catastrophic tire failure? That's what road side assistance is for. Free with a new car.

All you have to do is hit a curb or a piece of steel in the road and you have a hugh hole in your tire that makes run-flats useless. Have you ever driven the roads through West Texas (it takes a day to get from Dallas to El Paso) or driven through cental Kansas? Roadside Assistance would be pretty useless in those areas.....you would wait for HOURS for them to arrive. I think the small print in Roadside Assistance says you must be within 2 hours of a BMW dealer for them to assist you. Thus, I prefer to carry a spare tire when I'm on the road. Good luck to you if you don't have one.

I've driven from Dallas to El Paso and also from Tuscon to Dallas. It doesn't take a day unless you're a slowpoke! :D

I'd say that if ANYTHING happens to you on that stretch of road, you're pretty much screwed. Have to piss because you drank too much water? Screwed. Gassy from the nasty Taco Bell at one of those podunk towns? Screwed. Next gas in 50 and you thought you had 60 miles left worth of gas? Screwed. Flat tire? Oh hell yeah, you're screwed.

I actually saw a tumbleweed on I-10. A tumbleweed, like from Clint Eastwood westerns! On an interstate!!!

Moral of the story, don't drive in Texas. :alright
