I am driving down the road at about 30 mph and a fox jumps out. I just miss the fox and watch it run up a hill to my left. As I look forward, a german shepherd from the right, runs in front of my 328. The fox was running from the german shepherd. There was not time to avoid the dog. I hit the dog and it goes flying 50 feet.

I pull over to remove the dog from the road. As I walk over, it gets up and runs away. Perfectly fine. I had to chase the dog a few blocks in my car and it is jumping around, like it wants to play.

The impact split my fender. I got the damage fixed. The body shop gave me a new front bumper which they had to paint. Originally, the estimate was $1,500.

When I pick up my car, they tell me they found another $4,500 in damage. Total damage was $6,000. The front rail that secures the radiator, is plastic. This rail cracked in several places. The front fender is plastic and the impact of the bumper flexing, broke a mount on the fender. I need a new fender.

The housing to my adaptive headlight cracked. Cost....$1,500. My fog light housing is cracked.

Since this accident, I am very careful how I park this car. If you are parking behind an SUV, give him lots of room. The front end of this car is completely plastic and if you look at it, it will break!!!!

I hit a dog that lives and it did not so much as break a toe nail and my car suffers $6,000 in damage? WTF??????

On day 8 of my love affair with my new 328i I come out of the bank to see that in the 15 minutes I was parked in a small shopping center, someone had not only whacked my left rear, but fled the scene. The police were of no use, the lard ass who showed up didn't even step out of his car. He wrote me an accident report and told me to check with the clerk's office in a week and then drove away. Typical pig-like attitude. I then took it upon myself to canvass the area with the help of a few friends, to no avail. I also asked every one of the area businesses to review their security camera footage to see if by chance the incident was caught on tape. No luck. Then I checked my deductible ($1,200). The estimate I got from an authorized BMW body shop was about $1,500 for a small dent (about the size of a softball, with scratches as well, and a slight dimple in the metal above the main impact point in the rear apron, on the driver's side. The only new part I needed was a $12 bracket. $650 in paint work, $650 in metal work plus tax and parts. The repair was first rate, I am actually in the middle of Zymol Carbon waxing the thing right now, and I can't even see the repair at all. Westchester Classic Cars and Coachworks of Danbury (ask for Dwayne).
However, now I ride with a camera, and I photograph the license plate or registration of cars I am forced to park next to; The reminder of my repair bill
however reminds me that walking a few hundred yards from the remote accesses of a mall parking lot where I am relatively safe from this type of phenomenon is preferable to experiencing somehting like this.
I feel your pain. At least no one, nor the dog or fox, was hurt. However, I recommend just hitting the fox next time. Swerving radically to avoid a minor collision with a small animal (foxes squirrels birds cats) is even more dangerous than just driving through it.

I do the same thing. If I have paralleled parked behind an SUV, I snap a picture of the car and its license plate with my camera phone.

You are right about hitting the animal. If I had swerved, avoided the animal but hit the curb, my insurance company would have charged me $3,300 and I would have been at fault. Because I drove through the animal, the cost to me was only $300 and no fault was attributed to me.

The dog hit the corner of my front left bumper which got pushed in and ripped. The brakes are so good on these cars that I almost stopped short enough to miss him. The damage to my car saved him. If the middle of my bumper hot him, which is behind the metal frame, he would have died.

The owners of the dog are the ones responsible for your damage. The dog should not have been running free. The leash law covers that. You would prevail in court.

lets say you get damage from the alleged suv you took a picture of, so what do you do? you think a police department will put out an alert to investigate the owner for body work damage? attorney fees for getting permission to track and approach the vechiles owner would be more then the cost of the damage, it will drag out in court for years, a picture is practically useless, I know because I has a picture and tried to do this and ended up costing me $800 for the attorney and I never collected because it was not proven and never ended up in front of a judge- this stuff never goes to a judge, the damage was 1500 and lawyer 800, i wasted my money aplus the film from the camera, this was 15 years ago with my corvette.

Get their registration information fromt he DMV, it costs a fee. Then you go to their home with aflame thrower and explain your dilemma.

What kind of insurance do you have in Canada? If I am a complete moron and drive into a wall my insurance deductible is still $500. $500 no matter what the circumstances of the accident.

From looking at your pictures, that is one tough dog if he is still walking on four legs!

If I swerved and hit a curb or another car, the insurance is paid through the collision portion of my insurance which would cost me $3,300.

Because I hit an animal that is a moving object and has no insurance, the claim is paid for through the comprehensive portion of my insurance. My cost is $300.

If I hit a wall, that would be a collision claim. My cost...$3,300.

The $3,000 difference is due to surcharges over the next 4 years by my insuance company. I pay a deductible of $300 under both cases. Under a collision claim, I pay an extra $3,000 in surcharges, payable over 4 years.

If my car did not explode interbally like that, the dog would have died. He was playing and jumping around like he wanted to do it again. The dog thought it was funny. I could have strangled the dog's owner.

Wow..so far I have been driving my 335i from my garage to my company's "well secured" garage where I have a reserved spot where there is plenty of room...

I have not gone out in public with the car and feel a bit apprehensive in doing so..the safety of my garage and my company's garage leaves me feeling secure but some of the tips I've read here are good...snapping pics of surrounding cars with your camera phone is a good idea! You would think most people would respect a fine car but I guess that's not always the case...I've heard from a friend of mine who owns a BMW that he has had his emblem pried off a couple of times from his hood...

A bit obsessive I'd say if you start taking pics of cars surrounding you. And you are probably more likely to get hit by an irresponsible rich fella or lady who doesn't give a *beep* in your secure garage than you are at a Walmart parking lot. And people respect other people (some of them at least), I never heard of respecting a car, it is an object FCS. The vandalism incident you mention is probably more out of spite than due to someone wanting to stick the badge on his old Hyundai. I feel sorry for you in a way since you are not getting the full enjoyment of the car. No offense man, but live a little more and enjoy the fine auto you have. Cars can be replaced, but the missed moments in life cannot.

Translation:

I'm flying down a winding backroad doing about 85MPH when I knock over my beer while reaching down to punch the cigarette lighter. The next thing I know, a german shepherd is flying up in the air, having rocketed off the front of my car. The dog is flattened, so I drag it into the woods, cover it with some leaves and make up this great story about a fox... Now WTF do I do about the damage charge?

Just kidding...I'm glad you and the dog are OK.

Had a friend who owned a 528 (that was way back in the late 80s) and he ran over a dog (yeah not hit, but ran over) and didn't even bother to stop. He kept saying it was a stray dog that jumped out of nowhere and he couldn't avoid it, but for years we kept teasing him about it and making up stories on how he killed a dog intentionally and we would point to dogs on the road and ask him how come he hasn't ran them over yet. Ah, those mean highschool years.

I've had the car less than a week...I'm not saying that's the way I'm going to live..Most cars I've owned I have never had any problems with vandals..let alone door dings but this is the first BMW I've owned so I'm just a bit wary...heck with anything new you just don't want anything to happen to it...you know what I mean? If it happens..it happens..hopefully it won't..

Cool. I too do take precautions, but within reason. I try to park away from anyone at the malls or at work and if I don't have a choice or it is too inconvenient I try to park so that someone opening the doors is less likely to hit my car. I figure if I can open the door full swing (carefully of course) without hitting someone's door, then they shouldn't be able to do so either. Another trick I use is to try to park on the passenger side of a vehicle and between it and the curb (or on the passenger side of both vehicles on either side), especially at work or the gym where it is more likely there is only the driver of the car getting in. Not obsessive and doesn't cost any effort. I even kept doing that after 10 years on my old e36, but never shied away from parking anywhere. I even ventured and parked in unknown parts (not the ghettos) of Brooklyn and Bronx when my e36 was a few months old. As I said, that's what insurance is for, though I'd hate to have to use it.

So do I. But it seems even if I park in an empty area, far away from other cars, when I come out someone will have parked beside me in that otherwise empty area.

Perhaps they are purposely messing with me. Or maybe it's some sort of gravitational pull......

No kidding, that pisses me off so much. Last time that happened to me and when I came out they guy was in the car and the car was running. I was about to ask him why the heck he would park right next to me when every other spot was empty, but decided not to since I may come off as a jerk.

I don't understand this either. I go to a big box retailer. I park as far away from the front door as possible. There are no cars beside me when I park. i come out and some redneck has parked his 1981 Z28 not only beside my car, but right on the yellow line, 2 inches away.
