View Full Version : BMW 328 Rough Idle
E92Vancouver 03-23-2007, 05:50 AM Has anyone notice an occasional rough idle on the 2007 BMW 328 Ci? I am told this is because of valvetronic and the computer adjusting the valve timing to leave a little unburned fuel in the cylinders between cycles, to reduce emissions. Is this true or is my oxygen sensor gone at 500 miles?
E92!Dreier 03-23-2007, 11:20 AM what do you mean by rough idle?
Tony P 03-23-2007, 11:38 AM I was sitting at a stop sign the other day and out of the blue, I felt an abnormal shake or rough spot at idle that lasted about a second or two. I thought it a bit wierd... :shifty

That's exactly what happens once in a while! An occasional rough idle and shake when stopped. Must be a valvetronic/computer thing.
Tony P 03-23-2007, 03:23 PM Then it must be considered "normal." :confused
GJSPINELLA 03-24-2007, 02:24 AM My wife complains of the same in her 328i. Will contact the dealer to see if they have a computer update?
EvoRoadster 03-24-2007, 02:54 PM We haven't noticed it in ours.
cdotger 03-24-2007, 03:22 PM I have felt this in my 335 as well, I consider it to be normal...

KPACOTKA 03-24-2007, 04:10 PM Do you have auto or manual? Did you try to move auto to N? If it fixes the problem, then see a dealer.

Since the 335 does not have Valvetronic and the 328 does, it must be a Vanos/software caused issue.
E92!Dreier 03-25-2007, 07:57 PM Let me guess .... you have a n automatic transmission?

No, I have a 6 speed manual. I do not know how to drive an automatic. Is it hard to learn?
I have an '07 328i that idles as smooth as silk. It may be a different setup than you have in your 328ci though. Mine also has an automatic transmission.

Hmm. I am pretty sure even a slow adult or functional dummy can figure out how to drive an automatic. Good luck figuring it out if you ever need to, if you need any lessons, I recommend consulting the nearest 80 yr old woman.
ANYWAY
if you have an AT, and you experience a slight surge in idle speed, (something feeling like a small shake in your chassis, and mild vroom vroom vroom on the tach) upon coming to a stop, you should consider having a thorough inspection of your car's tranny linkage, and drivetrain. While the problem could be as simple as a neutral position sensor (extremely common in e36 and 46) or faulty O2 sensor, this problem left unchecked can lead to premature transmission failure. While your service advisor might try to tell you it's "nothing to worry about," or "we can't seem to recreate the symptoms you mention" you should persist in investigating the cause, because it is surely not the way it is supposed to be.
Good luck to all, and anyone who has any rude comments to make or any condescending attitudes to share can button it.
