Do our cars have 4 piston calipers or the standard 2 piston setup. I find the 745 has the best brakes of any car I have driven.

They are single piston front and rear. If you look at the size of the rotors you will inderstand why they feel so good. They are HUGE!!!!!!

Check out realoem.com for diagrams.

Single piston that sucks. The Acura RL I drove had 4 piston front calipers but stopped worse than my BMW. I guess size does matter when it comes to brakes.

Maybe. If you take a close look at them they are HUGE pistons too!

If you want to spend the money you can go up to 8 piston fronts and 6 piston rears. Be ready to dump about $15k in the setup though!

Often, the number of pistons is more marketing than performance...

Very true. A well engineered system will out perform maketing hype anyday!

The only benefit more pistons will give is a more even distribution of braking force on the disc. If the disc itself is smaller you will lose available braking power. If the hydraulic portion of the brake system is not matched properly to the size of the rotors, size of the pistons or weight of the car then it can underperform as well.

If all things equal, having more pistons can help braking performance but under most circumstances doesn't matter much. The size of the caliper and the rotor will have the most dramatic effect on your braking performance; hence why BMWs stop on a dime!

A good upgrade setup shouldn't cost $15k...

A nice 4-piston Brembo GT front setup for $3,500:

A UUC/Wilwood 6-piston front and 4-piston rear setup for $4k:

8 Pistons is overkill, and Brembo is nice but very expensive while Wilwood brakes work wonders on my neighbors racing 914. Either kit will allow your car to stop on a dime, in no time! ;)

The 15k i was speaking of is the 8x6 system from Movit'. Its the best of the best setup they have. They are still working on the full carbon setup for car. I hearit will be so costly that few if any will ever pe produce.
