Man I have seen your car on the net a couple of time. Your car is sick.
I am looking into getting one. I am trying to do some home work on it, how is the maintenance with the 850 vs. the 840. I found a 850 stick, so I am just looking around to see what are the issues with these cars.

I had a 1997 840Ci before I got the 860. Maintenance wise they are about the same (Oil Changes, etc) but the V12 has 4 more spark plugs and almost 2 of everything (Air Filters, Mafs, etc) thus I'd say a bit more.

Also the 840 shared the engine parts with the 740 and 540 and thus were commonly available and the dealers were familiar with the engine. The V12 parts are a bit time consuming to get (Mostly special order as the dealers don't stock them) and the dealers are not all that familier with it.

I do most of the small scale wrenching myself with the help of local 850 owner friends and have a independant BMW mechanic locally who is good with the V12 E31s....and that is the key. That makes your maint cost about the same as indys charge less $/hour and less hours spent.

I will highly recommend getting a 6 speed as they are rare and fun to drive.

Thank you very much. I have been hearing horror stories with some of the guys I spoke to. Maybe they were just spooked with it, since they did not do that much homework about the car when they bought it.
