Lynda took some front-end damage from a blown retread off of an 18 wheeler this morning. It went flying in the air in front of me and was still squirming after it landed when I ran over it. Fog lamps shattered, bumper trim missing, license plate holder gone, lower section is loose, front K40 reciever gone, something is leaking underneath.
Yeah, they get to save some money on tires. I'm sooo f$%kin pissed!!! Think I'll need an attorney to get back piece of mind?

Did you get the trucks plate numbers or anything? They can be held responsible for this I believe...

Suppose I should have added that info. Truck had pulled off waiting for a service truck to replace his blown tire. City police (a lovely female officer) came out to take info but said it will have to be handled as a civil case since no federal regulation prevents trucks from running retreads. I'm trying to catch my Insurance agent to discuss with him (former neighbor). Service appointment is already scheduled with local dealership to provide an estimate of damages. I'm not certain how difficult it's going to be to have the responsible party accept the dealerships cost to repair and I'm certainly not going to take her to some jack-leg hole-in-the-wall repair shop.

Sorry to hear that, My Buddy just had his VW repainted after a Semi hauling sand WITHOUT a tarp sprayed his car on the way into work...
He got the trucking companys name and plate number and called it in, He got there insurance guys number and had it worked out in a couple of weeks....
I hope you got the truck info and can get reimbursed.
Good luck!

That sucks...sorry to hear that happen to you.

My uncle had the same thing happen to his S550 couple of months back. Besides the obvious damage to the front bumper and fog lamp, he also had damage to the radiator and AC condensor. It was sad to see it happen to such a new car and I'm sure the replacement will never be as good as the original.

Get your insurance company involved. They will usually pursue the other driver and his company for reimbursement.

That is exactly the reason I NEVER roll behind semi's. I'll pass them at 100 if need be and pay the price if the police see me do it. F'n semi's.

WOW, That must have been a pretty big peice of rubber. Or, it was really moving fast thru the air. Needless to say I feel your pain. I ran over a piece last year in my 1998 Olds Bravada and knock a hole in my Shift Differential case. It cost me 1100.00 in repairs and I never got close enough to get the truck's information. Truckers need a separate highway just for truckers.

Sometimes you can't help thinking that the forces are against you. I've noticed that my 7 seems to be a magnet for all sorts of odd things that never happened with other cars. I almost always pick a parking spot as far away from the masses as possible only to come out and find some beat of piece of crap parked right next my 7. Just two nights ago I came out and found a run down GM minivan right up against the passenger side of my car. If he exited from the driver's side of the car the door had to be up against my car. I couldn't find any marks on the car so hopefully he/she exited from the other side of the vehicle.

Driving through Oakland last month I ran over a piece of metal sticking up at a railroad crossing and ended up with a nice gouge in the lower front bumper/air dam and a nice series of scratches all the way down the underside of the car.

I came out one day shortly after buying the car to find some young adult standing in front of my car with his foot on the bumper. It looked like he was trying to impress something of the opposite sex.

It also seems like something is always flying up and smacking the windshield or the front of the car. I'm not the kind of person to tail-gate and tend to stay as far away from other cars as possible but the 7 just seems to attract these things.

It could also be the price of living and working in the Bay Area. That being said it's a drag to see what a piece of rubber can do to your car. I wonder if it was a NAFTA sponsored vehicle?

Ouch! Then I consider myself fortunate that the truck that threw the retread pulled over to wait for a service truck and the local police were on the scene in time to manage the situation. I'm hoping your insurance picked up some of the tab for you. Even so, going through them you likely had a deductable to contend with. Makes me glad I kept my old trusty dodge as a commuter car.

Yup the good old boys from State Farm pick up the tab after a $500.00 deductible. But what an experience.

You wanna talk fun???
A few years back I had rented a Nissan Sentra.
I was going up the interstate in town and the pickup truck in front of me lost his lug wrench. The ones with four sides.
It went flying cartwheeling and bouncing in front of me in split seconds and hit the front end. WHAM
$700 damage.
If it had hit the windshield I wouldn't be writing this.

I miss Lynda.

I took her to the dealership for an estimate of the repairs. They are thorough aren't they?

~ $3300 Damage caused by thrown retread
~ $2200 Other items noticed

Leaking PS hose, tie rod and bushings, belts. Lynda's pushing 96k miles so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
PS and damage are being done, I told them to hold off on the tie rod and bushings (I'm hoping an indy will be cheaper).

Insurance is picking up a rental, 06 Taurus. For 3.0L, it's a damn slow car. My wife's 2.7L Sebring convertible will run circles around it.

Just an update. One week, ~$3200 for the retread damage, ~$400 for power steering hose replacement and Lynda is back home, looking good, and to fix my K40 they threw in the laser diffusor.

Glad to hear it was resolved. It sucks so bad when your baby is all screwed up. I'm getting a little jaded with my bimmer.. it seems every time I fix one thing, something else dies. Got it, went a few months and bam, expansion tank went. Replaced that and made it a year then everything started to fall apart. Front end shimmy, followed by water pump failure followed by radiator failure followed by GPS antenna going berserk followed by OSV failure and needs an upper rad hose. Oh yea, and someone kindly took off my driver's side mirror. I'm hauling her to the indy this weekend to have the OSV replaced and some other maintenance while the manifold is off but now I'm just wondering what will be next, heh.

Did someone say 'magnet'? After the insurance (of a major corp) covered the cost of repairs from the thrown retread, a couple of weeks later on the way to work (which I've cut to a rare occassion in my 7-series) a construction barrel got sucked into the roadway by a passing 18-wheeler. Guess who's car it decided to jump in front of! Damn twice in 2 months. What's going on? The damage only came to $1200 this time, but it's no less damaging to my nerves.

Cruiser, what are you doing? Seems like all of the road debris is finding your 7. You may need to get a shield of some sort to run in front of you. :)

On the serious side, I am glad you did not get hurt. ;)

You should not have to pay a deductible. That only applies when the accident is under your collision or comprehensive coverage. If the other driver is at fault his or her insurance is responsible for paying the full amount.

While many truck tires are retreads, that may not be the source of the problem. With multiple axles and multiple wheels and tires on each axle, it is not always noticeable if one of them is low on air pressure. The tire with the low air pressure overheats and then disintegrates. It happens to both new and retreaded tires.

It really disheartens me to hear people have such negative feeling towards semis. First I am sorry to hear about the loss. Having said that, if it werent for semis, none of you would be able to go to the grocery store and purchase your favorite dish. As a matter of fact, you wouldnt be driving that car, because it was brought to the dealer at one time on a semi.

Second, with the technology that has been developed lately in the tire retreading business, retreads are as safe as non-retreads. The problem is the air pressure is not checked on a regular basis and gets low.

As soon as the pressure gets low the tire gets hot and boom...blow out. That was the same problem firestone faced a few years ago with SUV segment. It might not have been a recap that flew off of that truck.

I guess the point I am trying to make is the highway is a dangerous place to be. People need to pay more attention on what they are doing and be thinking not only about the few vehicles in front of them but thinking about a mile in front of them. Yeah I agree semis are dangerous to be around but having that knowledge you think would enable people to adjust there driving habits like staying far enough back from a semi in case a tire does blow enabling them time to react and negotiate around the road hazard, instead of ripping off the license plate. No hard feelings here, just wanted to voice my opinion.
