View Full Version : Found a 850 available
Lsixer 03-15-2007, 04:18 PM Just wanted to pose this question to the 8 series crowd. I just found a 850 available and stopped to ask about it. The shop has it sitting there and it is available for purchase, the price is $16,500. Stupid as I was I did not ask the year ... I know, it is a basic question. The reason was I was a little taken back because one of the grease monkeys said that it has a electrical problem. I did not get any specifics, he wasnt sure and there was no one in at the time to elaborate. The only concrete info was the asking price.
Question. Has this model suffered a known electrical problem that is common for the series? I cannot find anything on the net that states that. Thanks for any information.
TurboSatoshii 03-15-2007, 05:06 PM I would just go back and get the details on the car and whether it is automatic or not, the CSI or not, and so on...
TerryY 03-15-2007, 05:37 PM Run thru the links in my signature for general information.
The e31faq site has a detailed buyers guide. Most of the points to check are known problems--some are electrical.
There is no universal killer electrical problem with the 8 series. There are several known and fairly common problems but those are usually easily fixable.
The usual killer for the 8 series owner is paying for someone to experiment while fixing the car. Simple problems can get quite expensive in the hands of an uneducated mechanic.

For $2000 more you can buy mine :)
91mat325 03-18-2007, 06:01 PM If you want an 850 try jdmconnection.ca they have tons for sale not very expensive either..
TerryY 03-18-2007, 06:40 PM Be aware that a Canadian 8 series is directly importable to the US.
But the recent flood of 8 series from Japan into Canada are not.
These J-Spec models must be Federalized to legally import into the US and the current cost for that will bring the final cost close to doubling the sales price of one of these cars.
xunkn0vvnx 03-24-2007, 03:32 AM Hey rane2001, pm me, i am interested in purchasing your car
Lsixer 03-26-2007, 11:43 PM Thanks Rane, it look as if you have a taker! :)
I found out more info on this 8 serires today and I think I am going to get it.
The short story is, we really dont know (as of today) what is wrong with it, if anything. The car is on a exotic car lot here in Abe's land and and it is on consignment. I am bringing my mechanic tomorrow, and we are going to pull it apart for inspection per the owners permission (owner = clueless). What I do know, mint/mint condition in and out white w/black leather inside. Auto (:( ) but less than 80k miles (79+).
I am going to negotiate a deal and it looks as if this sixer series member may graduate to the 8 series group! Be nice please ... I still love the six and am not getting rid of it.
840boy 03-27-2007, 10:14 AM The six is a great car. I saw an absolutely beautiful 635Csi that was in perfect as could possibly be condition a couple of weeks ago.
JoeFab 04-10-2007, 09:29 AM Hey Terry Y, if the Japanese car is legally imported into Canada and therefore legally registratable, can it then be easily imported into the US?

The short answer is No!
The Canadian rules were about the same as ours up until a year ago. Now they allow import of up to "92 registration cars without restriction.
The US is still at about '82 without restriction.
The problem that is created in Canadian imports to the US is that a '91 or '92 built for Canada 8 series is already US approved.
But the J-Spec and Euro spec 8s they are selling now will take an additional $10 to $15K to import legally to the US. The penalty for not doing importation correctly seems to range from fines and imprisonment for the person. The Really Bad part is that I believe that they can technically CRUSH the car:mad
Someone will figure out a way to get around it sooner or later but until then it is a bit too tricky for me:(
FITCHIK 04-12-2007, 05:21 PM Yep, I am keenly following some individuals as they untangle the knot for J-Specs to enter the US. It ain't pretty, but they are bright cookies. Just take heart that *we* can have Csi's in the US. (;
Afranzen, you are merely going from one shark to another. At this point no doubt someone will pull up the 8-series shark ad... Welcome to the club!
I originally listed a 6-series as my dream car. Somebody said that they were too needy. So I dropped the thought--but if the right one were to come along... They said that my 2002 was needy as well. It is. My mechanic said the same about my 8 with a funny smirk on his face. I signed my name on the check anyways.
Perhaps I need a hearing test. Nah. Im having waaaay too much fun.
