I've seen people very happy with M30 swaps into 525s. Search for threads started by MrProject. He put an M30 and a 5-sp manual in a 525 Touring and loves it.

There are a few people considering an LS1 swap into an E34. Obviously not a direct bolt-in conversion, but obtainable if you have the budget for it. Plan on $12k to $18k if you have a shop do it; and plan on a parts budget of $5k to $9k depending on your fabrication and mechanical skills if you DIY.

Is it an automatic? I have a 5 speed 95 525 and it is reasonably quick. A good running 525 should not be "very slow"

The most powerful direct swap would be an s50.

As an alternative, you might consider FI.

illl be doing the same ... to an s50 soon.. but i have questions about the tranny, i have an auto, can i go 5spd as long as i have the comp tranny.. im new at this stuff, so please any help.. im not rich, but i think i can pull off buying an s50.. what are the power potentials in a car the size of an e34? i really just want to beat all these mustang driving hillbillies where i live ( no offense to the car itself)

I hope you're right.

The prices of LS1s with T56 trans seem to be falling, so the major components are getting cheaper.

But I have yet to see someone post receipts or even anything close to a complete parts list that is less than $5k.

If you've done it, please enlighten the rest of us.
