View Full Version : Glasspacks on M30?
Flamewerks 03-12-2007, 05:17 PM There are a couple of people here who run maganflow on their 525s and 540s, but that's like comparing apples to oranges. Also, to be honest, I've never heard anything other than a V8 sound good with a magnaflow. My friend has a setup on his 4.3L V6 S10, and I'd say I would kill myself if I paid $500 for a setup that sounds like he drilled holes all over the exhaust. :D All other cars I've heard with them sound like crap, too. Then a guy I know siad I should take the rear muffler off,and put in really long glasspacks (over 24"). He said he had it on his V12 7 Series (E32) and it sounded absolutely amazing, but again, that's a completely different motor. He said it only cost him $100, installed, so it's not a huge investment, but I just can't imagine glasspacks sounding that good. Anyone else done this?
Itsnotme1988 03-12-2007, 05:41 PM Would probably sound good with a big resonator...
tfritz 03-12-2007, 10:55 PM as far as I know glass packs and resonators are pretty much the same...
scyrusurcys 03-13-2007, 12:26 AM Wouldn't that sound a bit raspy?
TripleJackInGA 03-13-2007, 01:43 PM Juts my personal opinion, but even on muscle-cars, glasspacks are some of the most redneck crap you can put on your car. Even if you have a big American V8, at high-RPM, it does sound very raspy, and annoying as hell.
Look at a Dynomax or something, but remember it's never gonna sound like a V8, 'cuz it ain't.

Absolutely right, I've had glasspacks on a chevy 350 motor and it was defineatly annoying to driver, passenger and neighbor. The interior drone will drive you nuts and the outside noise gets you the police. I'd personally look at something much quieter.
You could go with a QTP electric cutout welded in that diverts to a aggressive muffler while keeping the stocker for when you want to cruise. Best of both worlds.

Flamewerks 03-14-2007, 12:17 AM Ya, I didn't think it would sound good, but the guy swore on it! :dunnoI wanted a Borla, but they don't make any that are dual inlet, dual outlet, and from what I have read, it is best to leave the stock dual exhaust out to the back, because it is the best design for these motors. Or could you make it 2 into 1, and then have a single inlet muffler with dual tips withuot losing power?
TC535i 03-14-2007, 12:32 AM I did a muffler delete on my M30 and loved it. With the resonator in place, it gives it a very smooth, natural sound... just LOUDER.
Removing the resonator changes the tones, which can be good or bad depending on the car. My 540i... it's GOOD. On most of the 6-cyls... it's pretty bad. I loved the sound, so I just... made it louder.
TripleJackInGA 03-14-2007, 08:38 AM A guy here yanked the muffler on his E36 and it sounds ultra-gay and very ricey.
And I wouldn't go from an open dual exhaust into a single at all. Makes no sense, and restricts the exhaust.

That's terrible. I'd be interested on what he did to fit an M30 into an E36 in the first place tho. :rolleyes
I heard a Magnaflow on a E36 and didn't like it... must mean it doesn't sound good on my 540i, right?
TripleJackInGA 03-14-2007, 11:04 PM I think he has the stock engine in his E36. I was referring to Flamewerks post when he said "Or could you make it 2 into 1, and then have a single inlet muffler with dual tips withuot losing power?", when I was talking about going from 2-1, but maybe i misunderstood you.
I don't know about a Magnaflow specifically, nor a 4L V8 in a Bimmer, but V8s in general have a much more pleasing tone with almost any exhaust than the same exhaust on any 6 or 4-cylinder, especially if the 6 is straight.
konarider98 03-14-2007, 11:12 PM i am going to do the exhaust on my 535 soon(this week) and im goign to try a few things and post up some sound clips
no rear muffler w/cats
no res. and rear muffler w/cats
just cats
just headers:cool
Flamewerks 03-14-2007, 11:21 PM I imagine it will be, umm, LOUD!!! :D I'd like to hear it, though.
rhaig 03-15-2007, 01:28 AM There is nothing in this world like a notable V8 exhaust! Most else tends to sound farty and crappy in most motors I've heard. Even V10 and V12 quad-cammed engines can sound shizer with a free flow. I'm a pushrod American V8 with longtube header fan personally. (my previous modded LT1 camaro was awesome with this) Just don't be the_all_to_dreaded Honda 1.6 motor on the streets with an ebay fart-can muffler and I say give it a shot.
clevertd 03-15-2007, 01:33 AM Looking forward to hearing what a M30 without a muffler sounds like.
DuRWooD 05-16-2007, 03:55 PM I have a M30 with glasspacks, thought the car was too quiet, so I took the saws all to the rear muffler and welded up some cherry bombs with 3 inch chrome tail pipes, looks and sounds great. not too loud, just right

W.C.Adams 05-16-2007, 09:25 PM The second the motion for a soundclip
DuRWooD 05-16-2007, 10:42 PM uhhh.. sound clip please
Hmm, I have a sound clip, I just can't add it yet. I could email it to you though.

clevertd@earthlink.net and I'll post it.
DuRWooD 05-17-2007, 11:39 PM having some trouble getting the sound clip off my camera, I'll send you a pic of the set up for now. I should have the camera sorted out soon
Flamewerks 05-19-2007, 01:19 PM Also looking forward to that sound clip!
DuRWooD 05-22-2007, 10:52 AM Clevertd - sent you the sound clip and a couple pics, sorry about the wait guys
clevertd 05-22-2007, 12:08 PM Here's the sound clip link, right click and save as:

so how exactly is this set up? cat---> glasspack---> cherry bomb? And what is a cherry bomb?
DuRWooD 05-22-2007, 12:41 PM I am running the original exhaust up to rear muffler. So, cats -> center muffler -> glasspacks -> boom tubes (cherry bomb is a brand of glass pack muffler, and a boom tube is just a tail pipe made to resonate at a low frequency to make the exhaust more rumbly) Originally I was just going to gut the internals of the rear muffler, but this was hard to do without a cutting torch, and I like the look of the 2 3" chrome pipes comming out the back better than stock
DuRWooD 05-22-2007, 12:46 PM clevertd - thanks
DuRWooD 05-23-2007, 01:01 PM So what do you think?
DuRWooD 05-23-2007, 08:30 PM well guys, what do you think? Just so you know, I don't think this is amazing or anything, I really just did it because I'm planning on putting a whole new exhaust on, and I wanted something a little louder until I can afford the upgrade. Any opinions would be welcome, because it sounds good to me, but I can't remember the stock sound anymore for comparison...
clevertd 05-23-2007, 11:57 PM I'll try to remember to get a clip of my stock tomorrow, I've wanted something with a little more grumble, but don't want to spend money that could go towards turbo funding.
CSmith1 05-24-2007, 12:18 AM I think it sounds good. Before I purchased a catback, the muffler shop that I've been going to for years suggested this exact set up. At the time I could not figure what it would sound like/look like.
