View Full Version : Can I salvage this?

It's my old car, I sold it to a kid a month ago and he already crashed it. My main concerns are the following: The rocker panel is bent out, the door isn't aligned anymore, and the transmission brace area. They are not going through insurance I don't think so I may be able to buy it back for a good price, assuming the frame is not bent. I want to buy it back and turn it into a track car, I poured my heart and sould into that car for almost 3 years and tracked it many times.

It's hard to see in this pic but all this is bent up into the cabin of the car:

No, sell it to me.... Is there a kink in the roof? Looking at your pictures, I would say that it is fixable, but not an easy repair. Rocker and floor damage can be a bitch.

No there is no kink in the roof and the windshield didn't crack which is good. But it is so weird the pedals are close together. Also the fan now hits the radiator, but I think that is just from the tranny being pushed up.

Its going to be an expensive repair that is for sure. If you are interested in selling it let me know. We are close and could come pick it up no problem. :D

Yea I don't know what I am going to do, part of me wants it back just cause it was my first M3 and I spent a lot of time and money on it. We will see what happens, the kid is also keeping all the mods off of it as well, and the car has 140k on it.

^^^ year rocker repair isn't easy... lots of cutting/ welding there trying to make things right. on a positive note, when you stick the side skirt back on, it'll cover up quite a bit.

Yea I have a friend who owns a shop to help me, this would be a slow project for me to just work on when I have time. I don't know what I'll do yet, I really want a track car though.

Well, let's put it this way... We could fix your car, but you won't be able to fix in in your garage. The floor won't come back with a hammer and dolly. Sell it to Vahram, find out what the salvage value is from your insurance company and give him a call.

It isn't my car anymore, and they aren't going through insurance on this. And I will have to see if the frame is bent, my mechanic said it should be no problem getting the floor board back down, we'll see what happens.

Your other alternative is to find the payoff and send it down to Houston for Gromer to give you an estimate. I've never met him, but I've seen his work and the guy seems to be able to fix anything...except for those two E46 M3s that looked like trains hit them!

Yea I wouldn't be doing all the work myself obviously, I am not a miracle worker!

likely the door post is shoved a bit which would cause the door to "twist"
for the right price for a track car maybe..but you need to check with a good frame/body shop as I bet the door post might need a bit of pull

you can fix anything with enough time and money...

It looks promising but you should take it to a few body shops and get some estimates, they are free and the insurance won't know about it, that way you can get a good idea what will be involved in fixing it.

Yea, I know it would be an expensive and long process, but it is so worth it to me.

I would think if the price was right...than you could potentially do this. May I ask how this happened? What sort of impact was made?

Good luck man

I would be considering the net cost of making the car whole again. Purchase price plus repair. I'd want to be significantly below the cost of going out and purchasing another m3 with 140k miles that doesn't need repair work done.

If you gut the car and the interior is nice...you'll definitely reduce your net cost on the car. Too bad he's taking the mods, as those would be a great way to further reduce the cost of acquisition.

I think those guys were suggesting that you contact an insurance co. to see if they could give you an idea of what the salvage price might be. If you work with an agent, maybe he could get his appraiser to throw out a number for the salvage value.

Good luck.

He spun trying to correct a slide and took out a couple of posts. But he landed on top of the concrete base of on of the posts, suspending the car in the air, it took us like 2 hours to slowly push the car off using blocks and jacks as to not cause any more damage. And yea I see what you're saying about the insurance but I doubt I'll do that. And the thing is, it was my first M3 and my first love, so if it comes out a bit more expensive, then that is ok.

Run it by a few body shops. You really need a professional opinion when you get into stuff like that (I do this for a living, BTW). Should not be too hard to have some basic measurements taken with some tram gauges and find out how far out of whack it is. 1 hr of labor spent now could save you much, much more down the road. Until you do this, it's all speculation.

A car with that little damage on it would bring high salvage at an auction.
