I was going to post a couple of pictures of the new race ABS system and a smiling Stefan, but I can't get them on the thread. A quick primer on how to get them loaded and I'll send them up.

Just right click on the pic...root menu will pop up...just click on the "open with---paint. Then click on *image* tab when you're in paint. Next, click on the stretch/skew tab. From there it will pull up a window asking how much you want to increase or reduce the size of the pic. Generally, I've found that entering the value of "35" for horizontal and vertical will allow the pic to be sized small enough to go through the digest size limitation. Once you have the pic downsized, don't forget to save the image as the new smaller size. From there, you'll go to the "manage attachments" on BFC's posting page and search for your image in the file where you saved it. Hope that helps. Guys with photoshop can do lots of really cool things with their photo's. But, the rest of us just want to get the pic posted. This is how I've been able to get my images loaded on this forum. Good luck. Let me know if you need any other help. If you still have issues getting them loaded...send them to me via email and I'll attempt to post them for you. kenarutunian@hotmail.com Gread 03-09-2007, 03:17 PM Thanks Ken. Nothing is ever easy with the computer for me. I wanted to get Stefan out there on the world wide web in recognition for the great work he does. I figured Jon and the Evosport boys would get a kick out of the ABS location. RyanC 03-09-2007, 06:25 PM Lookin' good, Spendy! Although apparently all hopes for a shotgun ride around the glen are dashed... oh well, guess you will just have to let me drive it, then! Gread 03-09-2007, 06:40 PM Don't worry Ryan, I was just going to call and tell you you're joining me on sanding detail next weekend to get it painted. You can drive it just as soon as the mortgage papers clear... jjvincent 03-09-2007, 07:43 PM Looks like a MK60 system that has the pressure block for the brake pressure sensors and brake light switch (which is probably tied into the ADL so you can set the brake bias). Our M3's have the ABS pump located just forward of that position. With the right programming, it's one of the best systems around. My MK20 system is just about as good and it does get the job done. Chris@RRT 03-10-2007, 08:59 AM What's the source for these Conti ABS systems, and how is tuning accomplished? Gread 03-10-2007, 11:10 AM From what I understand (which is certainly limited) some of the parts were from PTG, some from BMW Motorsport and the tuning is from someone flown in from Germany to work with Auberlean and the team. To get more details I'll need the retina scan... Steve J. 03-10-2007, 12:12 PM What's the source for these Conti ABS systems, and how is tuning accomplished? You won't get the real answer posted on forums, its apparently a close held secret in the industry. Turner, Evosport, and others offer the parts through their connections though. But for anyone interested BOSCH does now have "Motorsport specific" units available, as I've been told by one of the importers. There are two big places I know that actually do the tuning/import of the parts from Bosch/BMW, both based in USA. Price ranges from $3.5-7.5k for complete systems including harnesses. There are Stock-ish (think CSL), and full blown Racing custom configured systems (think GTR). They all use Brake Pressure (F&R), 4 wheel speeds, Brake pedal signal, and Gyro sensor, so it can "adapt" to many applications, as it uses readings from its sensors to determine when lockup is, and brake each individual wheel appropriately. I'm still debating if the Stock-ish system is worth the ~$3500 investment. jdholder 03-10-2007, 01:07 PM Hey - good location!!!! Interested in hearing how you like it! Steve J. 03-10-2007, 02:23 PM Gread, when is your first race? Very interested to hear how everything works and how you like it. Gread 03-10-2007, 03:20 PM Jon, I figured you'd get a kick out of seeing another passenger floor mounted system. First race will be at VIR in April. Should be interesting as I'll be arriving with the build just completed and no testing. I hope everything goes fairly smooth, being 14 hours from home. Turner can't send me any support since they'll all be in Homestead for the same date. Mr. Clay seems to know the track well, so I've contacted him for some "quality" time. MRLM3 03-10-2007, 03:32 PM Greg, Nice to see that you're finally going to put some real rubber under the beast! Look forward to seing you at VIR. I hope everything goes fairly smooth, being 14 hours from home. Greg - A lot of us will be in the same boat as a few Mod cars have gone under the knife over the winter...we are hoping to get at least one test day in before VIR just to run systems testing on the new motor. It's promising to be a big race with lots of D/C/B Mod cars out to play. James will likely be out there playing in Bassen's CMod car at some point during the weekend, so you might want to be wary of his advice. :D ABS setup looks good! See ya at VIR. Steve J. 03-10-2007, 04:07 PM Should be very interesting to see how the Non ABS cars do against the abs cars as well. tynashracing 03-10-2007, 05:57 PM Jon, I figured you'd get a kick out of seeing another passenger floor mounted system. Greg, You're gonna love the track. VIR in April is gonna be awesome.:buttrock I know that I don't have a snowballs chance...it's still gonna be a blast. Gread 03-10-2007, 09:09 PM I know I won't have enough time to really push it at VIR and go hard with the ABS. Maybe a couple of laps here and there, but I doubt I'll have the car even close to sorted until at least the Lime Rock event. I've been to VIR two other times. Once for my first club race school, then last year's race and so all three experiences will have been in 3 different cars. It will be interesting to see if I can get to 174 on the back straight, then use the ABS... I've had enough of winter, staring at the car being built and talking about racing on the forums. It will be great to get back out and see everyone enjoying some track time. Bryan, are your Ohlins triple adjustable? Steve J. 03-10-2007, 09:20 PM Greg, it'll definitely take some acclimating to get used to your new beast, especially if its not setup yet (as you mentioned). I see in 4/06 at VIR you were in the high 2:09's, figure you'll need to drop about 6-7 seconds to be competitive with 06 lap times, and that was before everyone's HP upgrades. It'll be a very interesting event, should be a semi-level playing field as most people are just getting new setups sorted, but obviously some more than others. You'll definitely need to be comfortable with the brakes and cornering limits of the car to push the laptimes needed to take an overall win. And the Watts mobile has DA's, Triples are a bit overkill, especially when you have limited testing. RRT has put time into their car and suspension wise its getting very dialed in since its first running in 05. For the purposes of this application in clubracing, you really should have no problem getting the same performance from the doubles as triples, considering you'd need more fine tuning on the triples and testing/seat time. For a GAC/WC application where there is more testing and alot of dedicated setup days, with pro drivers/engineers at the side all the time, triples/quads definitely come in handy. Greg, have you run with the Ohlins yet? Glad to see you chose them, you'll be very happy with the decision :) Chris@RRT 03-10-2007, 09:27 PM From what I understand (which is certainly limited) some of the parts were from PTG, some from BMW Motorsport and the tuning is from someone flown in from Germany to work with Auberlean and the team. To get more details I'll need the retina scan... Okay this is pretty much what I expected. I work with Bosch ABS technology in my day job and I was surprised to see a Conti system in a non-production type application. Steve J. 03-10-2007, 09:37 PM Chris, I sent you a PM. ATE/Teves systems are used a lot in many race cars. Problem is most of the bigtime racing series don't allow ABS, so they are not known unless you see/hear what deep pocket privateers are doing (common in Euro series, i.e. FIA GT). Lots of pro drivers say they get used to it and are faster without ABS, but I think with the more advanced/powerful ABS systems in use today, it would be hard to beat. Gread 03-10-2007, 10:06 PM I hope to be able to crack 2:00 at some point. Maybe not this outing coming up, but shortly. There will be a big difference car wise from last year to this year. I was also able to pick up a year of experience. I like lofty goals. I have the triples because that is what Turner runs, which allows me to piggy back a lot of the baseline set-ups. Bryan's car will be closer in configuration than most and he has a lot of VIR time, so his experiences could help me baseline Steve J. 03-10-2007, 10:30 PM Definitely. Grab as much stuff from Will as you can...Maybe grab some of the drivers as an enduro codriver ;) You might even want to get in touch with RRT for some track support regarding the Ohlins if they are there at the event, they would be your best bet for that event...unless they have thier 323 project there, in that case they'll probably be pretty busy :) |
