these car had a soldered 2-AA rechargeable battery soldered to the circuit board (motherboard) at the bottom of the speedometer. as you know rechargeable battery will stop accepting charge. deterioate and chemical leaked out and damaged the circuit on the board. remove the speedometer and relocate the battery with a radio shack battery holder. it is quite a task. you don't need to remove the steering wheel to get the speedometer out. good luck. they want around 300$ for a rebuilt one. i found out how-to from roadfly

it would be easier to find one at your local pick n pull. i have had luck there.

ok where can i get that entire board. i did a bit more investigating and found that the bottom side of that board is rotted and all the connections on the spedo side are corroded so bad that the metal strips in the board are shot.

When I still had my '88 528e the speedo stopped working because a fuse blew out.

I'm parting out a 1988 528e. I have those parts, just not ready to to take them out until the snow is melted off the car. Gimme a day or two, it's going to hit mid-60's here in Mass tomorrow, that should do it.

As for the lights not coming on when you open the door, there's a 3-position rocker switch left side of the steering column. Be sure it's in the middle position. Then, get a little WD40 on the door switch's plunger.

I'll get my son to pull them after he gets out of school tomorrow. We have a Bentley's manual, so he should be OK. PM me for contact info.

sounds more like a bad speed sensor in the diff. This would cause the speedo to stop working.

Not sure about the light delay..........

no its the circut board in the bvack of the speedo that went bad. took it completly out and can clearly see the riped lines and corrosion in there.
