Also are modifications mad Money??
another thing i heard was that there engines were sensitive when modding..

Google The Mad Russian E46 M3 and it is an extremely informative page with all options from every year as well as colors available and changes made from model year to model year on the e46.....also a great FAQ on the M3

Modifications are ridiculously expensive. An intake, which does close to nothing, costs like $600.

Tell me about it. All I'm really worried about with mine is, aesthetic mods. I've already done - wheels, black kidneys, black fender grills, color matched reflectors, etc. I also put in iPod integration. My only other plans are a CSL bootlid, and and exhaust of some sort.
You really aren't going to get much more out of the S54, with out going FI, so there is no sense wasting the money.

The 01's, statistically, had fewer failures than the 02's. All years are affected, regardless of what BMW tells you. Best to get an 03.5 or older so you have the 100K mile coverage on the powerplant. Some engines run past 100K miles, including track time, without issue and some popped 1,000 miles from the dealership lot.
As far as what to look for... all the basics... make sure service hsitory is clean, bearing recall has been performed and, since no one has mentioned it... make sure you get the car inspected, prior to purchase, at a proper BMW indy shop (not a dealership) for condition. Have them pay particular attention to the rear subframe... the E46 suffers from the same RSF failure as the E36, although to a lesser extent, numbers-wise.
