View Full Version : When to wax new car?
gatorman992007 03-01-2007, 03:24 PM I just purchased new 328i e90, how long should I wait before applying the first coat of wax?
Also, does anyone have insight on the detailing sprays and how and why to use these products?

No need to wait. The paint is fully cured from the factory.
OC 335i 03-01-2007, 04:54 PM Indeed, you should be fine. Remember, your car gets imported here from Germany anyways.
PhilG 03-01-2007, 08:33 PM You can see when your car was produced - I have always waited at least a month from completion date to wax, to give the paint time to cure.
BMWSportXXX 03-01-2007, 09:20 PM BMW paint is actually powdercoated. It doesn't need to cure. You can wax the car on day 1. It even tells you in the manual that you can go through the car wash on day 1, although I don't reccommend that.

Do you think the car rolls out of the factory to the dealer lot in less than 30 days or something?
Zaf///Mroadster 03-01-2007, 11:02 PM usually wax every 2 weeks or so. I use quick detailer inbetween waxings. make sure you get a quality microfiber towl to dry the car with. microfiber won't scratch your paint. good luck enjoy the new car.
ATL04M3 03-01-2007, 11:15 PM Most people wait three months b/c the dealer typically waxes the car...I recommend a three waxes a year before the hot/cod and in between....but ten again, when I had my M, it was more like every two months...man, I miss that car...
...good luck with your new ride...
OC 335i 03-02-2007, 01:28 PM When asked how often I should wax on the detailing forums, the most common answer is, as often as you need it. There's several factors involved, if you garage your car or keep it inside, how often it rains, what your weather is like, what product you are using, etc..
As far as the detailing spray, a popular thing to do is use a California Duster and detailing spray between washes.
The dealer prepped mine with a synthetic product (I asked) and after several months now, it's still beading water quite nicely.
When the weather gets a little warmers, I'll apply Zaino. http://www.zainostore.com/ Great stuff.
Not a big fan of dusters and sprays; I just wash it every couple of weeks or so. YMMV. You need to be careful not to start making micro scratches in the clear coat (look like spider webs) by dusting/spraying on a less than clean surface. I'd rather just wash. Again, YMMV. Nope - that's why I said from completion date - when you actually get the car, the paint should be approaching or exceeding one month old. About the powdercoating etc., I really don't know much about that - all I know is that German paints are usually pretty soft and that I've always waited to wax. Honestly, it probably doesn;t matter much when you do it. I put repeated coats of Zaino on the Porsche frequently.
OC 335i 03-02-2007, 07:26 PM IME with body shops and detailing, Japanese paints were softer than German. VW is known for extremely hard paints. Let's say your car takes 4 weeks to arrive from Germany to the east coast, 6 weeks from the west. Then it still needs to go to your dealer and sell it.
AlexMM 03-02-2007, 08:23 PM How long does it usually take to wax it?
OC 335i 03-02-2007, 09:28 PM Should take 30 minutes tops. 45-1hr if you are fairly new at it.
