View Full Version : DINAN upgrades...
Icabob 02-28-2007, 04:32 PM I want to hear from all bimmerheads that are running with DINAN upgrades in their vehs.I want to start the great debate over performance upgrades(probably beating a dead horse).I got into some very heated debates about DINAN upgrades over on the roadfly site. After all have posted I'll give my humble opinion...lol.
Dinan S3 02-28-2007, 04:41 PM not this again
Schnell325 02-28-2007, 05:06 PM No idea....but I do commend them for producing the "e to i" conversion chip back in the early 90s. Excellent programming to wake up the eta block.
MMmmmpower 02-28-2007, 05:12 PM IMO dinan's overpriced.....the only way I would go with them is if I had a new bimmer on warrenty because dinan products dont void the warrenty
Harve 02-28-2007, 06:20 PM Okay Icabob, lets hear it. I'm seriously considering a Dinan chip for the reason Mmmmpower mentioned. It won't void the warranty for my new bimmer.
Icabob 02-28-2007, 06:35 PM WAY overpriced !! Dinan puts a download into your cars computer,it tweeks the settings...etc.This download takes approx 45mins in the shop, they use the same download for every car,I know 3 people that had what they think was a virus(or not),that was downloaded into their veh, went back to the shop, their vehs were in the shop for about 2 days, while the techs tried to find out what was wrong. Now ask most people(even the techs at BMW) what are the odds of a download making anything else in your engine go wrong??Slim to nil.I put a different chip into my 540i when it was still under warranty,NOTHING went wrong with my veh.BMW just wants you to buy Dinan through them, its a rip off, like I said there's nothing really can go wrong with your car by putting ANY kind of chip/download into your veh.Plus they have to prove that it was the chip/downloads fault if something does go wrong with your veh.If you want someone elses opinion about it,talk to JJ at Bavaria, yes he works for the man,but he's also a pretty straight shooter. My 540i comes around 282hp stock, the best Dinan could do for an increase was 295hp...18hp...for the price??I will say one thing about Dinan products though, their CAI is VERY good,a true CAI,air gets tunneled in from the front end of the veh.(worth buying)Hope this helps,it'll probably piss a lot of people off,but I did research for about 8 months before I bought mine...ask my wife...LOL.
MMmmmpower 02-28-2007, 08:02 PM Yeah JJ is a straight shooter and a good guy, I'v delt with him many times before. I totally agree with your stance on Dinan as well
Timsta 02-28-2007, 10:10 PM you purchase dinan for its reliability and its name. much for the same reason why you purchased a bmw.
of course you can go with other brands.. theres' nothing to stop you.. but Dinan is proven. BMW loves dinan enough that they don't void warranty.. that says alot.. and of course you pay a premium. when don't you pay a premium for anything decent?
Icabob 02-28-2007, 10:15 PM Dinan and BMW have an exclusive deal, that I heard runs out in 09,then lets see who they team up with?In my research of downloads/chips,I also realized that not everything that Dinan says is theirs, actually is.I've heard that the downloads are from a different company.Could be BS,but just letting people know there are lots of other options out there, that are less expensive, and I guess gives you more bang for your buck....Search With...And Destroy...Icabob "Crane"
Timsta 02-28-2007, 10:22 PM there's tons of software out there.. active autowerks.. dinan's, hell, i know of three more companies.. that pretty outproduce/out perform dinans. and yeah.. they are significantly cheaper too.
but the way it is.. dinan is one of the only companies that gives you an entire set to choose from. their free flow exhaust... high throttle body.. cai..is one of the nicer ones.
but then you could go with a eisenmann exhaust.. a gruppe m cai.. etc etc.
Icabob 02-28-2007, 10:31 PM I know what you're saying, lots to choose from, hey I agree with you on the Dinan CAI,one of the best, but I'm still not on your side of the fence when it comes to their exhaust and downloads. Seek With....And Destroy....Icabob "Crane"
Timsta 03-01-2007, 12:45 PM i'm beginning to like aa stuff. but... there's not alto of guys in canada with the stuff to actually see in person unfortunately..
d/a's street software is pretty good though.
Harve 03-01-2007, 02:56 PM Thanks Icabob, where did you end up going to get your chip put in and how much did it cost? This was low on my priorities for when I get the car, but if it's more affordable than Dinan then I can enjoy it earlier!!
Icabob 03-01-2007, 06:47 PM I got mine through Vincent at Autobraun,it took 2 days, cause he pulls your computer board right out,and puts the chip in,atleast it did for my 540i,you might not have to leave it there over night, could vary per series??Cost...honestly I dont remember,I'll try and find my bill,I think it was around$300-$500,I know thats pretty vague.Give me some time to find my bill.
MMmmmpower 03-01-2007, 06:53 PM I got mine through Vincent at Autobraun,it took 2 days, cause he pulls your computer board right out,and puts the chip in,atleast it did for my 540i,you might not have to leave it there over night, could vary per series??Cost...honestly I dont remember,I'll try and find my bill,I think it was around$300-$500,I know thats pretty vague.Give me some time to find my bill.
He pulled out ECU right out? ON 96' and up I thought it was just a program you plug in and download it off a computer, 1 time use of course.
Icabob 03-01-2007, 06:57 PM Nope, pulled the whole board out,sat upstairs with him and watched, its also registered with the company, with my name, serial number of both car and chip.
Harve 03-02-2007, 12:07 PM Thanks Icabob! So how many horses did it end up adding to your 540i?
Icabob 03-02-2007, 11:54 PM My hp went to 320,with just the chip. Was very happy with it !!!And still am...lol.I know of a chip for a Jetta that will boost the hp,from around 190 to 290,with just the chip.
Flamewerks 03-03-2007, 12:54 AM Sure it's hp, not torque? That would probably be a TDI then?
Icabob 03-03-2007, 04:28 AM Nope HP,talked to a friend tonight thats getting his Jetta done next week,he says he'll get the same results.
Schnell325 03-03-2007, 01:05 PM Show us a dyno and we might believe it. 100 hp gain, maybe if he has a Veyron.
Icabob 03-03-2007, 03:04 PM Just going by what I've read, and what acouple of people have told me,I know of one guy that has his Jetta Dyno'd,I haven't talked to him in acouple of months, but I'll see if I can get ahold of him,and get hime to scan his print out.
Schnell325 03-04-2007, 12:34 AM I could believe a fully built 1.8l or 2.0l I4 turbo gaining 100 hp. But just from a chip? That would be remarkable if it was. Let us know if you find the dynos.
Icabob 03-04-2007, 12:39 AM I was just talking to a local performance shop, and they've heard of chips giving upwards of 100HP,I'm reasearching and pricing chips for my X5,they found one that will give me an extra 55HP,plus around 15 HP with a CAI,and a cheater that'll tweak my adjustments, should gain around 70-95HP.
Harve 03-05-2007, 01:41 AM What?! So the chip added almost 40hp to your 540i!! We had a dinan chip added to a very old 7 and it only added about 15hps. Its nice to know there are better options out there.
alejandro 03-12-2007, 11:09 PM I used some cold air intakes before I went supercharged, and Dinnan was one of them Dinnan suck it is over price, the quality inside the cold air is not good it is not a nice smooth surface and that affects flow, I went to carbonio and the quality was 100 time better than Dinnan for way less money, look at Dinnan s/c unit it only puts 330-340hp in a good day (E36M3) my VF is 350hp all day long, thae only good thing about Dinnan is warranty
:lol
