View Full Version : Where to get 3M hood protection & tinting
Harve 02-28-2007, 02:10 PM Fellow Edmontonians,
Could anybody recommend a good place to get the 3M hood protection applied and windows tinted? On the flip side, anywhere I should avoid?
Thanks! :D
MMmmmpower 02-28-2007, 04:05 PM Well I had my windows done at Macolms, did a good job EXCEPT about a week later I did down my passenger side window and itleft a huge scratch on it. It scratched the tint right off, it was about 1.5mm wide and all the way up and down the window. Now when I had it done he told me it had a lifetime warrenty, so I go back there and he said the problem is my car and it will happen again. Well after telling him that THEY forgot to pull up some of the weather stripping he still refused.
I'v heard good things about Ziebart, the are on Calgary Trail cant remember where exactly, hope this helps
Icabob 02-28-2007, 04:10 PM Malcolms tinting...I got my 540i done there, and am bringing in my X5 to get done within the next month.Another good thing to install is rock guard for your headlights,I have it and its probably saved my lights atleast a dozen times,if not more.Their number is...487-3030.They are in the west end of the city.Bavaria uses them for everything, but if you deal with them direct you don't pay the Bavaria prices.
Icabob 02-28-2007, 04:12 PM Never had windows tinted at Malcolms, there is a place in Spruce Grove behind Wendys, not sure of the name right now,had my windows tinted on my Sorento...excellent job !!! But Malcolms does do a good job on the 3M.
MMmmmpower 02-28-2007, 05:18 PM Forgot to add, for the 3M hood protection I would visit Ziebart's, deffinilty do a good job at a good price
Harve 02-28-2007, 06:18 PM Thanks guys, I'll check them out. I've heard of Zeibarts before but I didn't know they did 3M. I thought they only installed car alarm/starters.
Mmmpower, that ain't good that Malcoms wouldnt fix the scratch on your window. I am weary of places with bad customer followup service. I'll have to keep them in mind.
Icabob, I didn't even know there were rock guards for the headlights. I'll make sure to ask about that.
Icabob 02-28-2007, 06:37 PM The rock guards are just a plastic film, like 3M that gets applied to your headlights, well worth the price, which was 100 bucks for my headlights and fog lights.
matty21 02-28-2007, 10:41 PM I have always used "European Auto tint" they are very thorough. they take all the windows completely out and tint right to the edges then install.
they will never peel, but if they do there warrentied:)
They also do hood, fender, headlight protection.
prices are competitive.
Icabob 02-28-2007, 10:42 PM Where are they located?
matty21 02-28-2007, 10:50 PM http://www.europeanautotinting.com/contact_us.html
they used to have the black onyx tint but not sure if they do anymore.
if they do...... GET IT!!!
matty21 02-28-2007, 10:54 PM The rock guards are just a plastic film, like 3M that gets applied to your headlights, well worth the price, which was 100 bucks for my headlights and fog lights.
are you kidding?? 100 bucks for headlights and fogs?? you payed too much.;)
Icabob 02-28-2007, 10:58 PM Yeah, but he took them off my veh, installed the coating, then re-installed them, both head and fog lights.I talked to 6 other places, and none of them took the lights out, gives a better area protection.
Flamewerks 03-01-2007, 01:23 AM Only heard good things about Malcolms. They are supposed to be very good. Would you mind telling how much you paid, Mmmpower? Also, Harve. I heard Malcolms gives Group discounts. I'm looking at getting my windows done, too. Maybe we can figure something out and save a few dollars.

I only heard good things about them too. I went with another friend and Macolm gave it to us for $180 cash, not a bad deal at all. The only beef I had was he would not re-tint my scratched window after he told me it was under warrenty....
Harve 03-01-2007, 11:57 AM Matty21: I bought my new wheels from Peter at European Auto Tint. He's a pretty nice guy, gave me a really good deal. :redspot What is the Onyx tint? Is it darker? What kind of pricing should I be looking at for the headlight/foglamp guard?
Flameworks, my car won't be here until April. :( If you can wait that long, I'd be interested in trying to get a group discount. I'll ask around and see if any of my buddies are interested as well.
Icabob 03-01-2007, 06:54 PM I'd be interested in this Onyx tint stuff, especailly if it looks factory installed(NO clear line at top of window).I'd get my 540i re-done with the stuff.
MMmmmpower 03-01-2007, 08:54 PM I just had my one front windo re-done at Ziebarts today, turned out great and the pulled the door panel right off to do it....not like the other place I got it done
Icabob 03-01-2007, 09:28 PM Is there still a small clear strip of window there??
Flamewerks 03-01-2007, 11:35 PM Here in Alberta, you're allowed to tint all the windows behind you, but not in front (winshield) or on your sides, right? Windshield is obviously a bad idea, but I want to get the drivers' and passenger side done also. But as far as I know, you're only allowed to tint the sides if it came that way factory. Mine didn't, so would the cops notice, if I ever got pulled over? Have you guys ever gotten a ticket for tinted windows?
PS: Harve, I don't think I can wait that long. My windows aren't tinted at all, and it sucks! Everybody can look into your car. :)

Yeah there really good there!
The onyx tint is an awesome tint . it looked black from a distance but up close and the right angle to the sun, you could see a slight sparkly rainbow look to it like onyx paint.. Best way i can describe it:dunno
i only know 3 cars that have it in edmonton . but on a sunny, hot summer day you didnt even need a/c , it was so good. no kidding. i dont know if its even around these days to be honest. i'll look around.
Alex has it on his E30 M3. i'm planning to get itr for my e30 m3 aswell ..

the clear line is a result from the installation not the actual tint film. but price often reflects quality. Too cheap and it will turn from black to purple in less than a year.

you can get tint on the side windows. if it's not too dark
( max 25%) you wont be bothered . but if your like me and have dark tint on the sides and like it, you wont mind paying a $57 ticket once a year.:stickoutt
Flamewerks 03-02-2007, 01:42 AM Cool, thanks. That's what I was thinking. 25-30% up front, and all black in the rear.
Icabob 03-02-2007, 02:16 AM I don't know how many times I've been stopped for tint,4 times last summer alone, and the ticket is now $250.00.I'm just glad that I was able to BS,2 cops, and another got a call on the Yellowhead(accident),and my wife BSd another cop.Try the line about sensors for your alarm system, and you can't peel it off yourself, needs to go into shop,so they can deactivate the sensors for your security system...lol.Worked twice.
Icabob 03-02-2007, 02:22 AM CRAP...there's no cops here is there???LOL
matty21 03-02-2007, 11:04 AM Cool, thanks. That's what I was thinking. 25-30% up front, and all black in the rear.
:confused I wouldnt do that. it looks funny IMO.
Get 25% on all 5 of the windows and it will look sweet.
BTW. my neighbor is a top cop, just retired, he tells me these things
Icabob 03-02-2007, 11:25 AM Hey Matty, ask your neighbour if its legal for the cops to make you peel off your tint in front of them,I've been told by a lot of people that its illegal for them to do that??
Harve 03-02-2007, 11:53 AM :confused I wouldnt do that. it looks funny IMO.

I was going to do the back darker as well. Didn't think of it looking funny, but you have a good point. I will probably just do 25-30% on all 5 windows.
Flameworks, thats okay. My car is 51 days in production...that probably means it will be an other 51 days before I get it? It's a loooong wait. :(
MMmmmpower 03-02-2007, 12:56 PM I have all my window tinted (front and back). I Have 5% in the back and 20% in the front, have yet to get pulled over for it. At night it looks like its all 5%
refplusten 03-10-2007, 02:57 PM I got my tinting done at Malcom's too. $200 cash and was very quick. Got my front windows tinted and was only questioned about it once when I got pulled over. (I always make a habit of rolling both windows down before the officer approaches - they seem to appreciate it too). The Officer told me that it was illegal and I told him that it was the lightest tint i could get and that the crime in this city was horrible and I wanted the tint to try and prevent punks from looking in my car for things to steal. Lots of yes sirs and no sirs later he said he didn't really care and told me that he did the same thing to his car. HAHA. But he did warn me that not all cops have the same view. I don't think I would let them touch my car. I'm sure you must have a certain time frame to get it removed and show the cops or maybe you don't have to get it removed and they can keep charging you. I dunno.
