View Full Version : New M5 pics.... Dirty and Snowy.... 91 Calypso
Fastx525ixGuy 02-26-2007, 04:02 PM As some of you know, i recently pulled the trigger on a 1991 calypso M5. It is in pretty rough cosmetic shape, but all it needs is some stupid little parts and a big detail. Here are some driveway pics, as it just snowed 4 inches today. Hope you enjoy them, and let me know what you think I should do.....
Danger, Lots of pics of a dirty ass m5 below

Im sure you smart guys will pick up on a few things, so let me see if I can address them first:
Front bumper (where it should be grey) was body matched. No accident, it was all scraped and he wanted it calypso (have reciept)
Wheels, hood, trunk, and steering wheel are all getting new emblems
Needs some interior parts
Paint will come back once buffed
And all that car cost me was $6200 in total. Not bad considering the performance upgrade. But the interior is dirty as all hell. I think it has some serious potential though......
DannyH4 02-26-2007, 04:06 PM It looks good. After a good detail it will really look good.
it does look good.. I'm jealous. I was gonna comment on the bumper lip and the side skirt differences.. are you gonna paint the front back to grey.. or paint the rest of the lowers calypso. (I vote calypso all around...)
Wanna make some money? I'll offer you my 535im + $100 for it..
MP525i 02-26-2007, 04:10 PM you should do a before/after when polishing. that thing will shine after some polish. :D
congrats on the ride man. she's a beaut.

4500 RPM 02-26-2007, 04:13 PM Holy moly.
What are you talking about with the steering wheel? You should just swap an E36 M3 wheel in, or an MTech II.
tfritz 02-26-2007, 04:13 PM beautiful car and even better find for you! good luck on the work it will shine when you are done!
shelbyz4u2nv 02-26-2007, 04:15 PM WOW....awsome find, i would love to have a calypso m5 to match the 540 :)...VERY NICE have fun w/ it
4500 RPM 02-26-2007, 04:15 PM Forgot to say that I actually like the M Systems on there, didn't think I would. Still needs OE M-Pars though...
skateparks 02-26-2007, 04:17 PM How many miles on it? Looks nice to me, don't be so had on the old girl!!!
Fastx525ixGuy 02-26-2007, 04:19 PM Wheels arent my first choice, but they will get the job done for now. As far as a detail, Im going all out. And as for the bumper, im not sure whether to go back to original, or go calypso all around. As soon as I get some things fixed i'll think about cosmetics, but right now Im just pumped to have a good starting point for a project....
Grim Reaper 02-26-2007, 04:21 PM Congratulations! She looks real good and like others said, will come alive with a couple days of detailing inside and out.
Question for those who haven't owned an M5 yet.... care to share with us how was that first ride home your S38?
Fastx525ixGuy 02-26-2007, 04:21 PM Mileage is about 160,xxx on body and about 60,xxx on engine, tranny, rear end, suspension, ect....
And Grim, dont get me started on that ride home. I threw on the 525 plates, and I cruised for about half an hour. The power of this thing is amazing! I am already developing signs of whiplash as I take off from a roll. I went to bed drooling..........
4500 RPM 02-26-2007, 04:39 PM Update you "Cars:" profile. :)
DannyH4 02-26-2007, 04:42 PM Update you "Cars:" profile. :)
+1. haha! I noticed that too.
W.C.Adams 02-26-2007, 04:47 PM Sweet looking car, dont see to many in that color.
Smactuna 02-26-2007, 05:09 PM nice car wish i could get one haha i saw a black one around my area and was sadden that i wasn't in it
J.Bimmer 02-26-2007, 05:09 PM Great looking car man, its going to look even better after a full detail. I think it deserves that spot in the garage.
540i6Mike 02-26-2007, 05:11 PM OK after hearing what you paid for it, you officially suck...or rock... Hmm, dunno. I'm too jealous! Love the color, looks great on the M5. Maybe you will do calypso t-stars to match with that m-system lip polished up real nice. Anyway, anyone who gets to drive an ix for the winter and an M for the summer is one lucky bastard. Congrats!

hahaha its not an ix, but so many people think that because of my name. I just put the x's in there to break up the name. lol
Thanks for all the comments guys, keep em coming. I need ideas....
xatlas0 02-26-2007, 05:24 PM I didn't know there were any calypso M5's, very nice. It would be a tough call between a 540i/6 calypso and a M5 calypso.
4500 RPM 02-26-2007, 05:29 PM I actually prefer the black lowers in some cases...maybe with a black center.
Keep the ambers, they look nice on Calypso. You could try running the throwing star covers and see how you like the look.
I'd also do Euro Ellips and ellip fogs.
I also like the late E34 M5 side mirrors.
DannyH4 02-26-2007, 05:30 PM Euro trim should be one the first things you do.

All of those sound good. Im keeping the ambers, getting euro trim, new headlights and fog lights, (maybe) tint, and who knows what else. It'll all come together eventually (eventually = hopefully by summer)

Sounds like a good start!
romeox929 02-26-2007, 05:53 PM it actually looks good color matched. you should do the rest to have an updated look to it.
Analog 02-26-2007, 06:24 PM Looks pretty good to me. That old rusty muffler has to go....
NikosX 02-26-2007, 06:37 PM Looks good to me too. Id return the front valence to grey. Id also do the seats which you already mentioned.
Leave lights alone and get that ripple taken out of the drivers side rear passenger door bottom.
All I can say is to buff the hell out of it. Shell look great.
Nick
DONT FORGET THE REGISTRY.

I'm not joining the registry until she is worthy. I was extremely hesitent to even post up these pics, as the neglect is obvious. But I'll treat her good....
And I cant wait for the next span of good weather days. I've got some major work to do....
Oh and BTW, where can I find the official interior name. I have been told there are two different greys/silvers, and Id like to know which I have.....
de Witt 02-26-2007, 06:49 PM Silver Grey to 8/90, Light Silver Grey from 9/90
The paint is the easiest part to fix. Looks fine now.
Get that front lip repainted to the black.
Nice find :D
Alpine535i 02-26-2007, 06:54 PM Very nice, great find. I'd put it in the garage!
4500 RPM 02-26-2007, 07:11 PM Go into the back seat center armrest and fold it down. There will be another flap that is velcro'd to the seatback wall or whatever it's called. There will be a tag or label that should state interior color and interior date of mfr.
When was the car made?

NikosX 02-26-2007, 09:04 PM Hi. You have the light silver grey.
I meant the Bf.C Official M5 Owners registry.
Beautiful car.
Nick
atl530i 02-26-2007, 09:11 PM You lucky bastard...
That is all I have to really say.
Very nice M5. Engine pics? How come it is not in the garage?? lol

Garage is ketting cleaned out in the coming days. It is jam packed with storage and crap in general. Engine pics will come once its tidied up a bit....
cybereclipse 02-26-2007, 09:54 PM pshhhh...dirty u should see my e34....
btw great m5, with a little bit of care, she'll look like new...
Itsnotme1988 02-26-2007, 10:06 PM Lucky bastard! I wish I could get a hold of a sound M5 for $6200!
jselig 02-26-2007, 10:06 PM love the color.
just so you all know it was a option to have the lowers painted in the color of the rest of the car.
DannyH4 02-26-2007, 10:07 PM Cant wait to see it after the detailing.
SC David 02-26-2007, 10:44 PM Looks awesome! I'd euro light the car out, and pretty much leave it at that. I think the smoked lights from your 525 might look good on it too, but that's just personal preference. It's gonna be fun watching this project unravel.
I noticed the center caps on there are sticking out a little bit. If you want some ones that are flush, let me know. I have some I was going to use on my Style-5's, but they were a little too small for the centers with the caps off. They don't have emblems, but since you are buying new ones anyway I figured you might want these. Just pay for shipping and they're yours!
flipwils11 02-26-2007, 10:46 PM That's a sharp car with lots of potential. I can't recall seeing another E34 M5 (on the web) in that color in the US. Neat find.
I really liked the euro smoked Hella ellipsoids I put in my former 3.8 liter euro M5. So much that I bought another set, sitting here beside me right now, for my E34 535i Touring project I'm doing now. Very well made, evil looking, and the light output is quantum leaps better than the US-spec lights. An oem mod that I did which I really liked on my M5 was the yellow foglight lenses. You can look them up in the parts cd and order them from your dealer for about $40 each. See pic below of my ex-M5 with the smoked lights and yellow fog lenses:
http://e12m535i.com/E34_M5/images/July_2006_headlights/DSC01081_smaller.JPG
Also you can see that my car was repainted since the lower part is not black/grey as stock M5's were. My advice is to repaint the bottom of your new car's front lip to match the rest of the lower skirts. It will be cheaper than painting the rest of the parts to match, and I like the two-tone look.
Finally, if your car is this neglected cosmetically, I would recommend first spending some money on thoroughly going through the car. Wear-n-tear suspension items like front thrust bushings, rear subframe bushings, shocks (is the self-leveling sagging in that picture you posted?), cooling system inspection and maybe new water pump, hoses, flush the system with distilled water and BMW coolant, brake flush, adjust valves, put in euro E36 M3 chain tensioner, etc. Lots of stuff to do to continue enjoying the car and then later you can spend money on cosmetic upgrades.
Best of luck with it, the car should turn out to be a real beaut'.
ohnoes 02-26-2007, 11:05 PM Beautiful car. $6,200 is a steal.

Wow, i really like those lights. It looks like that car was well taken care of. As far as cosmetics, they are far down the list of things to do. I am going to go through the entire car and replace as much as I can right away. I'm taking it to my mechanic to help me find all of the problems so that nothing is overlooked. A stock car that runs perfect beats a modded one that wont run anyday. As of now, i know some of the suspension bits need replaceing. Once I get all of the mechanics up to par (its really not bad to begin with), I will begin taking apart the interior and replacing what I dont like. I bought this car knowing it would be a project. Its not perfect by any means, but its an m5 that runs strong and has no major malfunctions, and it was had for a fraction of normal price. Thanks alot for all of your valuable knowledge, and let me know if theres anything else I should be aware of, as I am new to the M cars....
e34werkz 02-27-2007, 12:51 AM Congrats on the purchase man. With a little work it'll be looking great.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Smart man.
Nothing worse than a gorgeous car with all your money in it stranded in the breakdown lane.
moroza 02-27-2007, 01:34 AM That's one gorgeous beast. And for 6.2k? *shakes head*
Obligatory unsolicited cosmetic mod suggestions :) - brighten up the wheel lips (maybe polish) and keep the spokes black and the caps off, don't do shadowline, get some medium-dark tint, paint the skirts to match, and do something with the tails and corners (not sure what yet, but lose the ambers).
A.W.O.L 02-27-2007, 02:55 AM Im always pro shadowline
makes the car look so much better
anywho, pretty sick whip for the price
ruftek 02-27-2007, 10:29 AM Very Nice! From my understanding the Calypso E34 M5 is very rare and only a limited number were imported to the U.S.? Is it a New England car? It doesn't look like it has any rust.
P.S. buy some Meguiars Quick Interior Detailer (black bottle). It works great and will clean up your interior in no time.
s_ribs 02-27-2007, 12:24 PM I actually prefer the black lowers in some cases...maybe with a black center.

Actually, I'm a huge fan of the silver lowers that I've seen on a few M's. Perhaps it's just faded plastic, but it looks fantastic. I'd be tempted to go that route if I ever came across M5 bumpers.
Ambers and Calypso... I can't make up my mind. I hate clears on E34's, but smoked is sexy!
Btw, sexy car! Congrats on the purchase! Gotta love that sexy Calypso!

Yeah, i havent seen many in this color combo, but im not sure on the rareity. And no, its not a new england car. It spent the majority of its life in the carolinas, and was brought up here last year which is a plus. I havent been able to find any rust what so ever, so Im happy in that regard...
Antrieb 02-28-2007, 01:09 AM I'm sooooo jelous
Get that thing on a dyno ASAP
kesslerbmw 02-28-2007, 07:30 AM very very cool. Congrats. Pay a good detailer to wheel the outside, you'll be glad you did. Otherwise.. get to work, thats a sweet ride. :buttrock
Fastx525ixGuy 02-28-2007, 04:29 PM Ok guys, this pains me to type, but if you would like to here one of the worst stories involving buying a car just listen to this. First off let me just say that I no longer own this m5. I have made this decision based on a huge turn of events in the last few days that have made me learn a huge lesson in buying used cars. I will take you all back to when I first looked at the car, then bring you to now. I went to look at the car a few weeks back. As I became more interested I had it looked over by my mechanic, and we went through the car (but only really focused on engine and mechanics, because of the "aftermarket" work that was done) and came up with about $2k worth of parts that would be needed to make it run tip top. I was happy with this, as the car was priced at $6200. So after this, I give the kid my deposit, and we write up a sheet of small stuff he is going to get fixed before I pay him the rest. So a week or two goes by and the car is at BMW getting small stupid little things fixed. Id say a week after it was out, I met up with him and we made final arrangments to complete the sale. I go over, get all the paperwork done, and take the car home. As I am driving it, I notice the rear sagging alittle, and the suspension is no where near as tight as my previous drive in it. My first test drive the suspension felt great, and it wasnt sagging at all. So I dont really think much of it, and continue to work on the car for the next few days. Eventually, after many drives out, the suspension felt like shit. So I go through all of the papers he gave me looking for the reciept for BMW knowing that they always look for stuff that needs fixing. It is then that I realize something is wrong with the deal. The BMW reciept is there, but only the last two pages. The first is missing, and I knew it was done. I call him and he claims he gave me everything, and Im just being difficult. I proceed to go to his house, and eventually he gives me a few more papers that he somehow forgot to give me. I get them home and start to read, and this is what I see on the BMW sheet:
Found - Rear SLS shocks with hydralics leaking - $4k
Thrust rods worn out, along with other parts - $2k
All Tires worn (It had new tires on when I test drove it)
Wow, you'd think someone would let me know this before I paid the remaining $5700. None of these problems were apparent or urgent when I had the car inspected. Somehow in the matter of weeks, he racked up about $7k in repairs, and thought I wouldn't notice. At this point I am pissed. I call his house and he claims I am lying about the repairs, and that it was sold as is. I then get a call from another gentleman, who claims I am supposed to sell him a 1991 M5 that I am "holding" for the owner. This man has already put a deposit in for the car, and the owner apparently told him that I would sell it to this guy for $4k. This man paid a deposit to the owner for $600 already, and I had paid $6200 already. So at this point I am livid. This morning I show up at the owners door (at 7am) to drop the car off and get my money. His MOM then explains to me that the owner has done stuff like this before, and that he was leaving today for rehab (GREEEEAAAAT). So I reason with the mother who was very nice btw, and its clear that she was unaware of the actions of her son. I ended up getting my money back, and can say I owned an m5 for a few days. This experience has been pretty crazy, and I have learned to never trust anyone, despite who the middle man is (a good friend of mine). It is clear that the owner has played people before, and he left me with this car knowing that it was falling apart, and also knowing that he had pre-sold it to another gentleman. Anyways, Im pretty upset, but Id rather have my $6200 back and use some for either another car or to support a 525i project. That is just about it. I doubt anyone will read all of this, but I felt the need to explain the situation. You can say Im dumb and immature for buying so quickly, but when I had it looked at, none of these major problems were evident.
Also, I had the option to keep the car, but I figured if he was not truthful about this stuff, what else was a lie. Please go easy on me, Im feeling embarassed and ashamed as it is. But I completely feel that I am of minimal fault in this ordeal. He is lucky I didnt take legal action.....
Cliffs: Bought car, seller hid problems and history, Took deposit from another gentleman who in turn thought I owed him the car, talked with the sellers mother, found out he has a drug problem, owes the mother $20,000, tried to play me and a few others, I returned car and got all my money back, end of story.......
AndrewH 02-28-2007, 04:35 PM shit
WOW...(Yes, I read the whole thing)
hey.. truthfully bro, you got your money back. So you're really not at a loss other than not having an M5 anymore.
Glad it worked out. many times, people don't even get the chance to get their money back.. they usually have to eat the losses.
DannyH4 02-28-2007, 04:44 PM wow. dont be embarrassed you did not do anything wrong. Look for another m5!
de Witt 02-28-2007, 04:46 PM Sorry to hear.
Are you aware whether the other gentleman bought the car? I am interested in the car.
W.C.Adams 02-28-2007, 04:51 PM Sorry for your loss, must be a huge upset to have that history in your hands and have it taken away again.
My condolences
Now start looking for another M5.
Grim Reaper 02-28-2007, 05:35 PM Wow! I guess thats a real bait and switch with tires and the like.
Kudos to you for standing firm, getting your $$$ back and willing to admit your lesson so others can learn from it.
4500 RPM 02-28-2007, 05:46 PM Wow, a real bait and switch.
Don't be embarassed, you did nothing wrong.
Glad you were lucky and got your money back...what an asshole kid. :mad
NikosX 02-28-2007, 05:53 PM Yes. Id buy it for 6200. If you wouldnt mind could you email me the sellers info?
nikosx@cox.net
Thanks.

skateparks 02-28-2007, 06:01 PM For chris-sakes, Nik, let the kid grieve before you hammer him for the other guys info!!!
Now, Colby, where is the car? SHHHHHHHHH...... seriously kid, you learned a lesson and luckily lost nothing and you got the first M5 horror story out of the way unharmed. Keep looking but remember, M5's cost $15k no matter how much you pay for the car.
NikosX 02-28-2007, 06:03 PM Sorry to hear.
Are you aware whether the other gentleman bought the car? I am interested in the car.
:shifty
Dont feel badly, weve all gotten screwed at some point. Just be glad thats all that happened. Dont feel ashamed at all. You got your money. Be glad of that. Try suing a crackhead. Been there done that.
Fastx525ixGuy 02-28-2007, 06:08 PM Hey guys. Thanks for understanding. As of right now, i am still in contact with the mother and son trying to work some things out. The son is off the rehab, and the mother is thinking about junking the car, or giving it to me because I have lost about $500 in this deal with inspection, deposite (it was cash so that was gone the second the kid got it). Once I figure out what is going to happen with the car, i will update you all. If it is not given to me or the other supposed buyer, I will surely let you guys get in contact with her (dewitt requested first, then nikosx). She has been very cooperative and I truley feel bad as her son has left her in a hard situation. Again, thanks for your support, and just remember to be careful, no matter how good a deal seems to be....
Fastx525ixGuy 02-28-2007, 06:13 PM I know that m5's are pricey cars, and the money really isnt the whole issue. Its the dishonesty and and shadyness that the seller displayed that brought me to get my money back. I expected to put at the least a few grand into it, but the fact that he concealed so much key information from me, and tried to sell it to two people at once is just unacceptable in my book. I am still in the process of working everything out, so I will keep you all posted as to what happens.....
skateparks 02-28-2007, 06:24 PM Actually I asked first :stickoutt
I would be very seriously concerned with low-oil burnouot sessions trying to impress the friends...but, I would definitely buy the car for my Touring project (since I'm an hour away) since I don't need the SLS, etc anyway.

:mad
Eh, no problem. I need a touring actually. :devillook
skateparks 02-28-2007, 06:32 PM I was kidding, BTW.
You want a Touring? I've got a nice Alpine white with a soon-to-be-installed ZF 5 speed!!! 77,000 miles and no traction control!!
Fastx525ixGuy 02-28-2007, 06:36 PM The vultures are out, hahaha. Forgot about you skateparks, your first if everything falls through. It would be great to see this engine go into your touring project. Again, you will all be updated. This happened this morning, so its not over yet....

You have an email on the way this PM.
kesslerbmw 02-28-2007, 06:45 PM Wow... At least you got your money back. If you get a good deal on it great, if not you know you still did ok.
Fastx525ixGuy 02-28-2007, 06:50 PM Wow... At least you got your money back. If you get a good deal on it great, if not you know you still did ok.
Yeah, i mean I learned a good lesson and was able to salvage most of my money. If they decide to junk it, I'll pick it up and help a few bf.c members out with parts.....
s_ribs 02-28-2007, 07:37 PM That's too bad, but at least you came out fairly even on the deal. $500 is $500, but it could have been all $6200. As others said, don't feel embarrassed! Everyone finds themselves there once and a while.
For example... when I bought my M3 I was hasty and let someone smooth talk me. After buying the car, having it delivered to me... went to register it and they tell me it has a salvaged title. But, the guy crafted his words just right so that I wasn't able to go after him. Lesson learned.
J.Bimmer 02-28-2007, 07:53 PM Thats awful man, good to hear you got your money back. Hope everything works out with the car.
Antrieb 02-28-2007, 11:41 PM Well it might all work out in your favor if the mother gives you the m5.
What color interior? :)
4500 RPM 02-28-2007, 11:47 PM What color interior? :)
Leicht Silbergrau, I believe.
ohnoes 03-01-2007, 09:45 AM Sorry to hear about this, man. Hard lesson learned, I suppose. :(
brosher 03-02-2007, 11:12 AM Did you not sign the title? I can't believe you actually got money back. Was it a personal check?
Cacatfish 03-02-2007, 02:05 PM Too bad the guy's character ruined the deal. It's probably still a deal at that price. Just heave the SLS in favor of Bilsteins, and Im sure control arms, etc could be a lot less than $2k (stealer prices). I know how it is though. A crappy seller can ruin just about any car deal.
I agree with Cacatfish. You can get the suspension tip top for about $1k or less in parts if you ditch the SLS. I would recommend Koni's with Mtech springs or Dinan. Thrust arms can be had for $80/each with bushings already installed, piece of cake. If the engine/trans. is mechanically sound and checks out the other stuff is standard E34.
shragon 03-02-2007, 02:57 PM :( shady!! sorry to hear that! i was looking fwd to seeing updates to your new project. but it’s totally understandable. if i was in your shoes, i would’ve done the same thing.
SC David 03-02-2007, 03:27 PM That's a crazy story! I looked back in this thread expecting to see updates on the cars progress...definitely wasn't expecting this turn of events. Good to hear that it worked out reasonably well, though it is shitty that the seller was so shady and you had to go through the trouble of getting your money back.
Fastx525ixGuy 03-02-2007, 03:34 PM As alot of your are saying, I know that I could have had it fixed at a reasonable price if SLS was ditched. But it truley wasn't even about the money. I just felt that if the seller had been so shady and lied about these things, what else could be false? I'd rather find a better one from a trustworthy seller, or keep the money and put it towards the 525. Still havent heard whats happening with the car, but I'll keep you updated.....
Gunslinger 03-02-2007, 04:39 PM Bummer - hope you get the $$$ back.
I tend to believe those people who say that these are $15K (or more) cars - one way or another, whether it's repairs or purchase price, that's what you're going to pay in fairly short order.
clevertd 03-02-2007, 04:41 PM Boost the M50?

Oh they definatly are. But I can find a better example from someone more honest, rather than rush into a "good" deal....
atl530i 03-06-2007, 12:16 AM Wow...
moroza 03-06-2007, 12:49 AM Wow...
+1
Though if you checked out the engine and transmission and such with sufficient attention to detail, and they were kosher, maybe keeping it wouldn't've been such a bad idea.
I had a far less catastrophic experience with my first car, but I felt as I imagine you do. My condolences, particularly for what was supposed to be such a wonderful car.
It pisses me off further that the kid was a drug addict.
i've kept my mouth shut with this thread when you were looking at it.
I didn't want to be debbie downer, but with what happened on page 3....
$100 says it's not a dinan stroker

This is something I have thought about, and I havent come up with the answer yet. Since I drive a 525, the power difference was incredible to say the least. And from the research Ive done Dinans stroker is made to appear as stock as possible. And the amount of dinan fact sheets, contact numbers, quotes, and other goodies leads me to believe its a possibility, but I cant be certain unless I had gone in and fiddled with the engine, which I didnt because of my short period of ownership.
hootie 03-06-2007, 04:32 PM WOW looks amazing. Good luck with the car.
