I'm new to this board, first posting. Anyway, my car is a '92 735i, with a 383 tuned port engine. I've never seen or heard of this done before. If I knew how, I'd post pictures. Anyone interested?

I think we're all interested in seeing pix of every completed project. You're like me right now, we don't have enough time and/or posts to qualify to post with attachments. Can one of our long-time regulars do an email relay and help get some pix up?

Oh, yeah. There's interest!

Email pics as stated, so lithium726 can post them for you!

Looks good!

have you had it weighed? I'd like to know what the corner weights are with your new engine. F/R balance, etc.

PS - Looks like you forgot a couple screws in the last pic!

Only fired it for the first time Sunday. Still have to come up with cooling fan, which will mean new shroud.(those are the shroud fasteners in the picture) I'm curious about weights as well, I do know the new motor w/all access. and headers was 475 lbs. on my shop scale. I should weigh the old motor, it's still on a stand in the corner.

Man that looks really good. I was tinkering with the idea of putting and LS1 in mine, but decided to boost it instead. But there is still time. How did you plum your power steering lines? I 'm guessing that you have to make them. How did you hook the speedo since the old one is in the tranny? Did you use a 700r, 4l60e, or turbo 400 or 350? Looks to big to be a turbo 350 or 400. Did you keep the 2 piece drive shaft or just had a entire new one mad, because I'm sure you had to have the length modified. If you have more pics of the engine mounts and under the car I'd love to see them. This just might get me back on putting that LS1 into the car. I'd like to here more about it when you drive it down the street. Thanks for the pics.

700R4 trans, 1 pce driveshaft. Speedo comes from diff, not trans. Rear crossmember had to go, welded mounts for thrust arms to frame. Headers were the major issue, unless you can DIY, it will be a major expense. All else was basic hot rod fabrication. Power steering remains to be seen, I don't know if the GM PS pump has the ass to power the BMW steering box

I believe you have vacuum power brake assist, so the reduced pressure of the GM pump will not be an issue and should run the BMW P/S OK. I have fab,d a bracket to mount the BMW P/S pump for my application but I don't think it will fit the LT1, only the LS1,2,6.

Did you do a custom oil pan to clear the front subframe? Headers look really good, and you are right, headers will be a BIG pain for most BMWs with the conventional steering box, The E32 is a bit wider then my E24but---

Keep up the good work!

The vac. booster wouldn't play nice w/ the valve cover, I installed a Hydro-Boost, W/ late model Vette master cyl. The oil pan is a Milodon, meant for an early Nova (has a notch for the cross link) Other than a little massaging of the trans tunnel, everything fits very nicely. If it weren't for custom headers, this would be a "relatively" easy conversion.

What did you do for mounts for the engine?
What about lal the usual electronic shit on the bimmers, how is it responding to the 383? I'm thinking LS1/2 for me, went for a rip in a buddies 05 Cadillac CTS-V (LS6) and oh boy i need to put something in the old 7.

Motor mounts, trans mounts, all had to be fabricated, not very hard. As I said previously, the only potential show stopper is building the headers. The BMW electronics were not an issue, all the computer needs to know is that a motor is running (it can't tell the difference between a GM mtr. or BMW) I've been on the road for 3 wks. now, and I very pleased with the outcome. I'm searching for a numerically lower rear gear, the stock 4.27 is too much for highway travel. If you've got the abilities(or the cash to pay someone) go for it.

I just ran into this thread, it looks great! I have a '93 740i with a Nikasil block. It's always in the back of my mind that the block will go out (so far, so good). It's nice to know that there are alternatives. This is the first swap in an E32 that I've run across.

TPI although cheap... are pretty underperforming engines in stock form... rated at 245hp in a 5.7 350ci.. and 215hp in the 5.0 305ci...

they make great torque because of their looooong runners.. but lack hp..

The stock 4 liter V8 is about 286 hp (big improvement over the 3. 5 liter six) so not that much different. Probably more torque with the L98. If you put an LS series engine in it would be a big improvement, especially for the money spent.
